Let me preface this review by saying the whole disk has a real christmasy
feel to it. The first story, "A Christmas Without Ranma," doesn't
have the flare of its OAV counterpart, but it delivers in all the
important areas. The episode is self-explanatory. Ranma goes missing
on Christmas Eve, and Kodachi, Akane, Shampoo and Ukyo all set out
to find him first. The story climaxes with Akane facing down and
telling off her three rivals, and ends in typical Christmas fashion,
with the whole cast around the Tendo dinner table. This episode
is every bit as good as "The Tendo family Christmas Scramble."
The second episode, ("A Cold Day at Furinkan") tries to be a bit
more serious. All of Nerima is buried under a dynamic blizzard,
and an abominable snowman is the cause of it all. Everything down
to the background music reeks of suspense. If you like to watch
Ranma and Ryoga team up, this episode is for you. A solid story
that you will enjoy, despite its lackluster ending.
And finally, we have "Akane Goes to the Hospital," where Akane sprains
her leg due to her male classmates, Ranma included, and has to stay
under the care of Dr. Tofu, although you won't recognize him (Kirby
Morrow). You have the well-wishes from the usual suspects, but for
some odd reason they decide to throw nightly parties at the Tendo
Dojo while she's gone. After a few nights, Ranma finally musters
up the courage to apologize to Akane, and it results in a very sweet
ending. This DVD is for the Ranma+Akane fan in everyone. In all
three episodes the normally spiteful duo take a break from their
usual sniping and malleting, and actually act like civil people.
I highly reccomend this disc.
