Matsugo

Matsugo is a shinigami with a bold personality. He knows what he wants, and he's not afraid to make sure everyone else knows it. His straightforward, bold manner rubs a lot of his fellow shinigami the wrong way, but Matsugo seems not to care about the feelings of others. All others that is, except for Rinne Rokudo.

When Matsugo and Rinne were in elementary school together, they were close friends. Matsugo was picked on constantly because of his large, thick glasses, seemingly helpless personality and his nerdy way of dressing. The only friend he had was Rinne, whom would agree to eat lunch with him everyday, or accompany him to the bathroom when he had to go. Rinne was the only other student who was nice enough to team up with the timid Matsugo when they did field training, practicing their skills on evil spirits.

It was on one such field excercise that Matsugo's life changed. He and Rinne had a falling out over a misunderstanding, and soon after Matsugo was accepted into an elite junior high school. In the years since he last saw Rinne he adopted a more stylish look, gained confidence and got contact lenses to replace his glasses. When they meet again, Rinne can barely remember his former classmate let alone recognize him.

Upon reestablishing contact with his old friend Rinne, Matsugo seemingly falls head-over-heels for his former chum. Rinne seems mostly indifferent to Matsugo's overtures can sometimes be taken a signs of friendship, but then go to a different realm of affection. He's jealous not only toward Sakura, whom he realizes Rinne has feelings for on some level, but anyone who he thinks Rinne might like to spend time with over him. Matsugo is especially antagonistic to Ageha, his most active rival for Rinne's affections, and will not hesitate to use his black cat, Kuromitsu, to gain the upper hand.

The Meaning Behind the Name - 沫悟

Matsugo's name is written with two kanji, the first "matsu" is "splash" while the "go" is to "perceive" or to "realize". The meaning of Matsugo's name is a bit opaque.
