Kyokai no RINNE Vol 3

Chapter 19: 転校生
Tenkousei

(Transfer Student)
Rinne and Rokumon discuss the lack of requests for exorcisms left in the weather hutch lately, when they are surprised to see a young man expertly, though somewhat roughly, banishing a wandering ghost. The boy sees Rinne and ensnares him with a rope, after mistaking him for a ghost, and tosses sacred ashes on him. It hurts Rinne, who manages to flee, but once he removes his hakama, the ashes effects subside. Rokumon finds a photograph that the boy dropped, and is surprised to see it's a photo of a very young Sakura Mamiya. Back in class, the teacher welcomes a new transfer student, Tsubasa Jumonji, who happens to be the same boy Rinne just scuffled with. Tsubasa approaches Sakura, and asks if she remembers him from elementary school. He tells her he went to school with her briefly before his parents work caused his family to move away. Like Sakura, Tsubasa could also see ghosts as a child. When he realized Sakura could too, he felt that he had found someone that could understand him. Tsubasa promptly asks Sakura out, just as Rinne enters the room. When Tsubasa sees Rinne, he tosses his ashes at him once more, but this time they have no effect, as Rinne is not wearing his hakama.

Tomodachi kara de yokereba

(If You Don't Mind, Let's Be Friends First)

Sakura asks Rinne directly if he's avoiding her because of Tsubasa asking her out, but he replies he's not interested in that sort of thing. This surprises Sakura a bit, but she accepts Rinne's decision. Rinne finds out that Usui's lingering attachment is Sakura's friend, Miho. Using his haori, Rinne gives Usui a corporeal body so that he can ask Miho out. As soon as she agrees, Tsubasa arrives at tries to warn her that Usui is actually a ghost and she should not trust him. Before he can say this though, Sakura steps in and stops him. Miho decides that Sakura and Tsubasa should go on a double date with her and Usui, which leaves Rinne the odd man out. He disappears before anyone notices, leaving Sakura a bit miffed. Rokumon tries to cheer Rinne up, but Rinne is unsure of why he's feeling awkward in the first place. In class, Rika, Sakura's other friend decides she wants to go on the double date as well, and decides to invite Rinne as her date. As the date starts, Rinne warns Tsubasa that he's there as Usui's bodyguard so that he can pass on peacefully. Tsubasa makes it clear that if Usui turns into an evil spirit he'll quickly dispatch him.

Chapter 21: 楽しいデート
Tanoshii Deeto

(A Fun Date)
On their triple date, Rinne soon finds himself mortified over the cost of everything. Rika, the girl who invited him keeps wanting him to buy her food, and Tsubasa seems willing to spend money in order to upstage Rinne. Thankfully, Tsubasa is more intent on having a good time with Sakura rather than trying to exorcise Usui, the ghost who is trying to pass on to the next world. Rinne continues to have a miserable time until Tsubasa tries to win a stuffed dolphin for Sakura in a claw-grabber machine. Unable to do it, Rinne easily retrieves the dolphin, and Sakura tells him she'll treasure it always, which helps lighten his attitude. During lunch, Rika mentions that she thinks Rinne likes Sakura, but Sakura denies the infatuation, after noticing Rinne is concerned about the amount of money he's spent. Later the evening as they get ready to ride on the ferris wheel, Rinne realizes that Usui is close to passing on. He poses for a picture with his date, Miho, and then vanishes. Miho and Rika are shocked, but Sakura calmly explains that he must have been a good ghost. Back home, Rinne admits to himself that he finds Sakura cute, while Sakura sits in bed, studying the dolphin he won for her and realizing it's not cute at all.

Upon further investigation with Rinne, Sakura learns that a faceless ghost woman has been asking the students in the art, manga and anime clubs to draw her, but when they start to draw her face, she insists that they render something other than a blank void. Whenever the students draw an imaginary face, she always gets angry, destroys the drawing and tossing ink in their face. Tsubasa learns of the strange spirit as well, and seeks to lure it out so that he can use his ashes to exorcise her. The faceless spirit gets the better of him, and when Rinne tries to use his haori to give her a corporeal body, she floats through it, surprising everyone. Rinne hypothesizes that she's not a spirit at all, but the embodiment of some powerful emotion. The following day Rinne returns with "emotion dust" which he says will help to connect the faceless being with the source of the emotion that created her. The next time they see her though, she is lurking behind a handsome young student, who calls her "The President". The faceless girl tells him not to draw her and runs away, just as Rinne flings his emotion dust at her.

Notes:
  • After school clubs in Japan are known as kurabu (クラブ) and consist of extracurricular activities that students manage themselves. Another term frequently used is bukatsu (部活) which translates as "club activity." Most clubs have their own assigned room, along with a teacher who acts as advisor and are required to have a minimum number of members, usually five. Clubs can take a significant amount of time, sometimes as much as five to seven hours a week. Students who do not belong to any club or lack club activities are called kitakubu (帰宅部). The two main categories for clubs are undou-bu (運動部), sports clubs and bunka-bu (文化部) or cultural clubs. Examples of clubs are of course the traditional sports clubs, as well as arts clubs like drawing, which is featured in this chapter, cinema, dance, literature, Japanese culutral arts like flower arrangement, tea ceremony and calligaraphy, or humanities clubs like history, philosophy and politics.

It turns out that she stole the drawing and erased the face, which crushes poor Egawa who had a crush on her. After talking with Sakura, Hitomi reveals that she erased the face because she was drawn wearing glasses, which made her feel ugly. That's why the faceless spirit refused to ask Egawa to draw her. Once the misunderstanding is cleared up, Egawa draws a new face on the drawing, and the faceless spirit is put to rest.
