Kyokai no RINNE Vol 5

Chapter 39: 美人秘書の正体
Bijin hisho no shoutai

(The Hot Secretary's True Identity)
Ageha and the mysterious secretary begin to fight one another in the street. The secretary seems to hold her own, easily evading most of Ageha's attacks until a coin tossed between her eyes causes her mask to crumble, revealing that the secretary is actually Ageha's sister. Ageha demands to know why she's working with the damashigami, when Sabato suddenly arrives. Sabato proceeds to ask Rinne if he has decided to inherit the Damashigami Company, which alarms Ageha, who is beside herself with anger over his sister not only choosing to work for Sabato, but dating him as well. Sabato sees the engagement ring that was bought using Rinne's money laying on the ground and scoops it up, deciding that he'll give it to Ageha's sister (even though Rinne incurred the debt for it). Finally Ageha realizes that Sabato is Rinne's father, and she angrily swings her scythe at him, while Sabato happily encourages Rinne two-timing Sakura and Ageha. Having lost patience with his father, Rinne tries to cut him down, causing Sabato to vanish along with his secretary and the engagement ring. Ageha sets out to find the Damashigami Company and destroy it, while Rinne, Sakura, and Rokumon all follow behind. It seems that finding the Company is next to impossible as Sabato alters the winding path to it that leads through the spirit way. Rinne reassures Sakura that there is nothing going on between he and Ageha, before reluctantly having to tell Sakura and Rokumon to go back to the world of the living, as Ageha has just fallen into a pitfall and needs rescuing.

He cuts her free and asks her to sign a contract so they can work together. Just as she is about to sign, Rinne attacks the man, revealing him to be a damashigami who was attempting to make Ageha sign an IOU. Ageha does not appreciate Rinne's help, and he continually has to help her avoid the money stealing obstacles that are laying in wait as they search for the Damashigami Company. Watching Ageha willingly part with massive sums of money, Rinne quickly realizes that she is very wealthy. Tired of her unappreciative attitude and wastefulness, Rinne starts to leave her until she comes across a massive evil spirit wearing a road construction cone on its head. The spirit manages to pin Ageha down, and Rinne leaps in to save her (and collect its one million yen bounty, which he needs to pay for the engagement ring his father bought in his name). Ageha walks up to Rinne and hugs him from behind, just as Sakura and Rokumon arrive. As Rinne tries to explain that it's not as it seems, Sakura asks to be taken home.

Ageha, as thanks for Rinne's help, brings him a luxurious multi-tiered bento box, a jubako box. While delievering it, she runs into Tsubasa who assumes she is an evil spirit. After a short misunderstanding, Tsubasa encourages her to court Rinne after explaining that the two of them are rivals for Sakura's affections. Ageha delievers the jubako box, which Rinne cautiously accepts as he knows it will help him cut back on his food expenses. Ageha gives it to him happily, as it is an antique from her family that is said to grant a wish of whomever eats from it. She learns too late though that the jubako does so at the expense of the eater's soul. As his classmates examine Ageha's unusual cooking, the giant sillouette of what looks like a weiner octopus rises from the jubako behind Rinne.

Konjikiou

(Soul Eater King)
All of the other students are locked out of the classroom after Rinne accidently wishes to have some time alone to explain things to Sakura. The giant octopus wiener is actually the Soul Eater King, a demonic creature that will grant three wishes in exchange for a soul. As Rinne tries to explain things to Sakura, Tsubasa, Rokumon and Ageha are all stuck outside desperately trying to get in and warn Rinne of the danger. Soon the Soul Eater King tells Rinne that he will grant two more wishes for him, and Rinne accidently wishes the King would "shut up for a minute" which he promptly does. With only one wish remaining the King taunts Rinne to wish for Sakura to go out with him. Rinne manages to explain that Ageha means nothing to him, leaving Sakura confused as to why Rinne even feels the need to tell her such a thing. Rokumon finally manages to get inside the classroom and Ageha banishes the Soul Eater King with her scythe before Rinne can crumble and use up a final wish. Ageha warns Sakura not to have anything more to do with Rinne, but when Sakura asks her why, Ageha isn't sure what to say, and simply retorts that it is too dangerous. When Sakura says things haven't been too risky, Ageha is embarassed by her request and runs away in shame, assuming that Rinne and Sakura must already be an item.

Chapter 44: 薔薇と醤油
Bara to shouyu

(Roses and Soy Sauce)
After some discussion with the others, Ageha decides that reuniting the ghost girl, Fumika Honda, with the boy she was pining for (A-kun) is more important that discovering her connection with the dog, Tosanishiki. Only Ageha sees the logic in this, and it seems like it is more to serve her own purposes of comparing her situation with Rinne to Fumika and A-kun's. Upon arriving at the school everyone watches as A-kun and B-ko prance around and flirt with one another, which nearly causes Fumika to transform into an evil spirit. Once she is calmed down, she remembers that A-kun only came to the library to see B-ko. She also remembers the day that she nearly confessed her feelings in the library, but saw A-kun and B-ko together and fled, leaving behind a book entitled Roses and Soy Sauce. Upon arriving at home, she took her dog, Tosanishiki, out for a walk but was hit by a large truck. As she lay dying, she told Tosanishiki to go to the school library and retrieve the book she lost. Tosanishiki wanted to do this so badly that his spirit became separated from his body, and although he cannot read the kanji on the books he stood guard to make sure none of the books on the shelf were removed. Rinne gives Fumika his haori which allows her to have a physical body and she finds the book. Inside was a love letter written to she had written to A-kun that she was afraid someone would find. She destroys the letter and begins to fade away, now free to pass on into the next life. After she disappears, Ageha's infatuation with Rinne seems like it is even stronger as she hopes to accomplish with him what Fumika and A-kun were unable to have.

Shu, the team captain, was injured due to Riku's negligence. The young freshman accidently tossed a banana peel onto the track causing Shu to twist his ankle, thus putting him on the sidelines for their upcoming track meet. Rinne and Sakura try to investigate, but Riku is quite vocal about not believing in spirits. While observing him at the track, the spirt hand once again emerges and trips up the young boy, but he continues to run and insists that nothing is wrong. Rinne uses a special paintball to reveal the rest of the hidden spirit, and it turns out it is the disembodied spirit of Sho Kazami, the team captain. It seems his grudge over Riku's banana peel has become personified in spirit form and is seeking revenge against the hapless track star.

Chapter 46: 知らせたくない
Shirasetakunai

(I Don't Want Him To Know)
Frustrated by Riku's insistence that Rinne not mention Shu's wayward spirit to his senpai, Rinne has to come up with an alternate way to exorcise the disembodied vengeful entity. Everyone visits Sankai High's track late one night and Rinne shows them a device he bought, a channeling doll. After scanning a photo of Shu, the doll absorbs the vengeful spirit and transforms into the physical form of Shu Kazami. This allows Riku and he to re-run their race, which the spirit happily admits that Riku won. At first this seems to correct the problem, but then the spirit reappears clutching Riku's ankle and saying "if only I hadn't slipped on that banana." Rinne realizes that something else is preventing the spirit from moving on and decides to visit Shu's house to investigate. Rinne makes a discovery and invites Sakura and Riku to see what he found. As it turns out Riku's guilt created a disembodied spirit that has been haunting Shu. It sits in the corner, crying and apologizing for throwing the banana peel, annoying him all day and night. Because of this, Shu's own disembodied spirit was created filled with regret over stepping on the peel, not because it caused his injury, but because he's tired of dealing with the wailing spirit day and night.

Chapter 47: おばけ杉
Obake sugi

(Haunted Cedar)
Sakura ponders a giant cedar tree from her elementary school's front yard. She ponders how it used to give off a wonderful warmth and all the children used to gather around it. Tsubasa reveals that he when he was a child he buried a power stone there in order to recharge it using the tree as a power source. He asks Sakura out on a date to retrieve the stone and she happily accepts the offer to return and see the old tree again. Tsubasa is thrilled, but Rinne's disappointed that she's going out with him. On Sunday, Tsubasa and Sakura arrive only to find the tree has grown cold and something has carved giant scratches into it. Soon an evil child spirit arrives and dispatches Tsubasa using his giant spiked yo-yo. Sakura immediately recognizes the boy as Yota, a classmate that died when they were in elementary school. Yota seems to hold a grudge against Sakura, and his voice changes, becoming demonic as he claims "its all your fault, Sakura!" Just as he is about to attack, Rinne and Rokumon arrive. Unfortunately Yota found Tsubasa's buried power stone and has placed it inside of Creeper to magnify its power.

Chapter 48: ヨーヨーの思い出
Yoyo no omoide

(Yo-Yo Memories)
Yota expertly uses his yo-yo skills to fend off Tsubasa's attempts to exorcise him, flinging his sacred ashes away with a well timed "around the world" and "loop the loop". Sakura recalls that Yota was always a bit of a bully and in elementary school he liked to use his yo-yo to flip up girls' skirts and otherwise act like a pest. The only person who was more skilled with a yo-yo was Sakura, and she used hers to counter him and protect the girls he frequently tormented. Rinne is able to use a splitting insense to drive out a giant evil spirit that has influenced the boy. Unfortunately the spirit is still holding Tsubasa's power stone which is making him much stronger. Thankfully Rokumon sells Tsubasa some splitting insense in pill form, and Tsubasa launches it into the creature's mouth. As it chokes on the pill Rinne easily banishes it using his scythe. Everyone gathers around the tree where Yota's spirit has settled and he reveals that he also hid something under the haunted cedar. When he was digging around for it he accidently uncovered Tsubasa's powerstone, which drew the evil spirit to him. A little more searching reveals Sakura's yo-yo. As it turns out Yota had stolen it and hidden it away because she was more skilled than he was. He had planned to return it to her before he died. Sakura accepts the yo-yo and Yota is able to pass on to the next life.
