Chapter 59: 夏祭りの怪
Natsu matsuri no kai

(The Summer Festival Mystery)
Miho and Rika try to get Rinne to come to the summer festival with them, but he declines due to his lack of money. Tsubasa lords it over him, and happily agrees to accompany Sakura and her friends instead. Feeling dejected, Rinne jumps at the chance when a job offer allows him the chance to go. A freshman named Natsumi Matoba tells Rinne that every year her boyfriend desperately tries to win a teddy bear at the shooting gallery, only to have terrible things happen that prevent him from winning it. She believes she is cursed and that by going on a date to the fair with Rinne perhaps he can root out the cause. At the fair, Rinne and Nasumi run into Tsubasa, Sakura, Miho, and Rika who think he is dating the young freshman. Sakura seems surprised and Tsubasa decides to try to prey on her jealousy to get closer with her. Soon Nasumi's grandfather's ghost appears and asks Rinne to win the ratty old teddy bear for his granddaughter. Rinne agrees, only to have the old spirit turn evil and begin to torment him by dropping a watermelon on his head.

Chapter 60: クマちゃんの思い出
Kuma-chan no omoide

(The Teddy Bear Memory)
After confronting the ghostly grandfather of Natsumi, the old spirit reveals that ten years ago Natsumi had asked him to win the teddy bear for her at the festival. He was unable to and died three days later. The teddy bear, therefore, became his lingering attachment to the mortal world. When Natsumi's boyfriends would try to win the bear for her, grandpa would grow jealous and ensure that they failed. Rinne vows to win the shooting gallery challenge and capture the bear if grandpa will then pass on the the next world. Rinne is galled at the price of the shooting gallery, but after much difficulty manages to win the bear. Unfortunately, the old spirit has lived on earth for so long that he has forgotten how to pass on. Rinne places the Haori of the Underworld on the ghost, allowing him to be seen by his granddaughter and make peace with her. She reveals that she never wanted the teddy bear in the first place, it was actually a handbag next to it that she asked her grandfather to win for her. He asks if he can make up for it, and she requests a Louis Vuitton bag instead, which immediately makes him drift away. Rinne tries to set things right with Sakura, explaining that his "date" with Natsumi was all work related, making her wish he would smile when he was with her. Rinne explains that is his "work smile" and it doesn't come cheaply.

Chapter 61: 涅槃家へようこそ!
Nehanya he youkoso!

(Welcome to Nirvana House!)
Sakura, Miho and Rika all spend an afternoon at a beach where there are tales of ghosts that haunt visitors. Sakura can see them clinging to a group of boys, and Tsubasa suddenly arrives and exorcises them. Rika and Miho flee in terror at the thought of ghosts on the beach, which leaves Tsubasa alone with Sakura, much to his excitement. Soon though, they run into both Ageha, Rinne and Rokumon, who explain this is Ghost Beach, a place where spirits can play and enjoy before passing on. Young shinigami act as lifeguards for these spirits to ensure that they don't wander out of their designated area and pester living people. Ageha is jealous of Sakura intruding on her time with Rinne, but soon Sakura has to stay when the spirit of a deceased karate practioner asks her for a date in order to help him pass on. She agrees to a group date, and everyone tags along as they enjoy beach treats at the Nirvana House, the local ghost eatery. After enjoying the fireworks most of the other spirits pass on into the next life, but the karate kid still lingers. He asks Sakura if she would like to go steady, which worries Rinne. He thinks if she agrees just to make the spirit happy he'll haunt her forever, but she casually says she already has someone she likes. The spirit gives up and passes on, while Rinne and Tsubasa nervously wonder who she is talking about. She quickly reveals it was all a lie to help the ghost pass on though.

Notes:
  • This is a good place to discuss how the characters address each other. Rinne typically calls Sakura "Sakura Mamiya" which is rather formal and distant. Tsubasa calls her "Mamiya-san" which is still respectful and formal. Sakura addresses both Rinne and Tsubasa as "Rokudo-kun" and "Jumonji-kun". In this chapter Tsubasa becomes angry when the karate ghost calls Sakura "Sakura-chan" which is much more intimate that he would dare to address her. When Rinne tries to step in as if he were Sakura's boyfriend he calls her "Sakura" without any honorific which is considered very intimate. This is the only time Rinne does this in the series.

Chapter 62: 霊道石
Reidouseki

(The Spirit Way Stone)
When Sakura comes back from summer vacation she finds the entire school weighed down by spirits. None of the other students realize that their stiff shoulders and heavy heads are the result of spirits perched atop them that followed them home while they were on their summer vacations in far-flung destinations. Tsubasa throws ashes at a few of them to try to send them away, but more and more keep arriving. Reading through the messages left at the weather hutch, Rinne realizes that the president of the pro-wrestling club, Tatsuya Fujinami, has picked up a "spirit way stone". The stone draws ghosts to it so they can pass on into the next work without the help of a shinigami. After removing the stone, Tatsuya runs off, but Rinne quickly realizes the stone is alive (and female)! As it turns out, it had seen the distant city lights and wanted to come explore Tokyo. All of the spirits are drawn to the school now that the stone is there, but there is no portal for them to pass through to go to the next world. Unfortunately, the stone has expensive tastes and demands to be shown a good time before it will return to the mountainside. Rinne cooks up a scheme using a disco ball that creates illusions and the help of some ghost hosts to show the way stone a good time. When she recieves the bill for her extravagant evening, she quickly agrees to return to her spot on the mountainside.

Chapter 64: 化け猫
Bakeneko

(Bakeneko)
Sakura and Rokumon talk to the boys trapped inside the shrine. The boys tell them that they had heard some sort of ghosts were trapped inside the shrine and accidently broke the door when trying to confirm what was inside. This allowed the two ghost cats, Akamaru and Toramaru to escape. The ghost cats proceeded to trap the boys and replace them, wrecking havoc on their families. Meanwhile Rinne tries to fight the two bakeneko with no luck. His scythe is broken and ineffective and when he attempts to use his Wheel of Judgement the cats bat it around as if it were a toy. Rokumon finds a book that detailed how Toramaru and Akamaru were trapped before- but putting expensive tuna fish in the shrine and luring them into it. Rinne says this is out of the question, as he cannot afford such an expensive plan. Instead he uses his broken scythe, wiggling it in front of the two ghost cats as if it were a toy and luring them back into the shrine. As soon as they return, the four boys are able to escape. Hiroshi and Taichi kindly pay Rinne a thousand yen for all the trouble they caused, but he immediately has to spend it to properly repair his scythe.

Once turned over, the sand would flow for ten years and exorcise any ghosts who came to close to it. Now the sand has turned black and its usefulness has expired. Rinne makes a quick trip to see Tamako who gives him replacement sand, but as soon as he reloads the hourglass, Tsubasa and Ageha break into the house and knock the hourglass over again. Tomoo can't believe this, and Imoto runs off after her revelation. Needless to say, Rinne is concerned, because now that the curse has been cast, it is beginning to affect Imoto too.

Chapter 68: 呪いの方法
Noroi no houhou

(How the Curse Was Cast)
Sakura goes to speak to Imoto and tries to make her tell her why she cursed Asatsuma. Unfortunately Imoto clams up after telling Sakura that the boy would tease her and call her potato girl (Imo is potato in Japanese). To Sakura it seems that Imoto must have cursed the young man for teasing her. Rinne and Rokumon spy on the girl using the haori to remain invisible. One night they spy her sneaking outside with a boy and throwing it into the nearby canal. Rinne hops in to fish it out and realizes it is a mail-order curse kit. Later Rinne lures Imoto and Asatsuma back to the potato field where the curse occured and uses luminol to reveal what Imoto wrote in the field using the cursed fertilizer pellets. As it turns out she was trying to cast a love spell on Asatsuma, but while she was writing his name she overheard him dismissively say that he doesn't like her that way. Angered, she messes up the name she had written and it became "satsumaimo" rather than "Asatsuma". Her anger translated the spell into a curse rather than a love spell, hence cursing the potatoes. Realizing what has happened, Asatsuma apologizes and confesses his love, causing the curse to be broken.
