Chapter 69: ホームステイ実習
Hoomusutei jisshuu

(Homestay Training)
While walking through town Sakura notices quite a few shinigami children wandering around the neighborhood. Rokumon explains that shinigami children are sent to live with experienced shinigami who help train them and show them how to escort the spirits of deceased pets into the afterlife. Sakura soon discovers that Rinne is hosting a shinigami child named Shoma. Unfortunately for Rinne, Shoma is incredibly bratty and feels that living with Rinne is beneath him. The little boy explains that if he gets 50 points he can return to the afterlife and put his time with Rinne behind him. In order to do this in one fell swoop he'll have to exorcise an evil spirit rather than waste time escorting cats, dogs and fish into the afterlife. While walking home one night Sakura and her friends come across a powerful evil spirit of an office lady and her pet alligator who have merged into one twisted being. Shoma immediately gets excited at the thought of exorcising this creature and making a name for himself, and in order to do so he steals Rinne's scythe.

Chapter 70: ワニ女の事情
Wani onna no jijou

(The Story Behind the Alligator Woman)
While out for a walk Sakura sees the alligator woman from behind. As she approaches her she realizes something shocking- this woman is not a ghost. Meanwhile Rinne is searching for Shoma and his stolen shinigami scythe. Shoma finds the spirit which looks identical to the woman and promptly lands on Shoma, crushing him with its alligator weight even though it wears the face of its owner. The spirit asks if Shoma has "seen this face" and Rinne quickly realizes the truth. The alligator is Chibi, the long lost pet of the woman Sakura has found. It turns out both the woman and Chibi are searching for one another. Shoma is angry due to the "evil spirit" being nothing but an overgrown animal spirit, which will only net him three points towards his needed fifty. Shoma soon realizes though that if he can manipulate the spirit into becoming evil he can get more points when he exorcises it. He uses a paint ball to make the alligator visible to his forlorn owner, but upon seeing Chibi the woman freaks out and flees. When she lost Chibi he was only a tiny alligator, but now his spirit has grown in size and is a much more fearsome looking creature. Being dejected by his former owner, Rinne worries that the alligator will soon become an evil spirit.

Enraged the alligator prepares to attack, but just as Rinne is about to send him to the life by force his mistress arrives and this time accepts the giant alligator as her former pet. • The strangling scarf spirit can be compared to a fabric yokai called "Ittan-momen" (一反木綿/one bolt of cotton). This yokai is a strip of fabric that floats on breezes and wraps itself around its victims. They are said to have originated from Koyama, Kagoshima prefecture. Though the yokai has a basis in real life Japanese folklore it gained popularity after it appeared in the Gegege no Kitaro manga where it was known as "Rollo Cloth" in the English translation. Takahashi mentions it in her foreward to one of Shigeru Mizuki's books which you can read here.

Chapter 78: プレゼント
Purezento

(The Present)
Rinne and Sakura lure Haruka Igawa to the front of the school and ask her about the strangling scarf. The girl reveals that the scarf was in fact knitted by her the year before as a gift for a senpai that she had a crush on. Sadly just when she was about to give him the gift she saw him accept a scarf from another girl. She was crushed and threw her scarf in a dumpster. Rinne reasons that all these feelings became imbedded into the scarf and in effect made it into a tsukumogami. The scarf nearly attacks Haruka, but she apologizes to it and it quickly calms down. Sakura suggests if the scarf is given as a gift to Rinne perhaps it will become purified. Rinne protests mildly, hoping that Sakura will give him the scarf she made instead. When the strangling scarf is presented to Rinne however it attacks him and flees. Haruka realizes that Rinne is nothing like the boy she had planned on giving the scarf too, but luckily it finds a young man in the judo club (who isn't very attractive) and peacefully presents itself to him.
