Kyokai no RINNE Vol 9

Chapter 79: 眠れ受験生
Nemure jukensei

(Sleep, Exam Student)
Rinne receives a letter asking him to investigate why a student keeps falling asleep while trying to prepare for his college entrance exams. The student, Manabu Ochiai, insists he must be cursed, but everyone else tells him that falling asleep while studying is completely normal for students. Using a special spiritual polaroid camera Rinne is able to capture a photograph of a ghostly glasses-wearing girl that hovers around Manabu, rubbing his shoulders and stroking his hair in an attempt to make him fall asleep. When shown the picture Manabu admits that he has never seen this girl before in his life. Rinne and Rokumon follow Manabu home where he meets Keiko, his beautiful college-aged tutor who is coaching him through his exams. Rinne uses the camera to photograph her after Manabu once again falls asleep, and he sees that the glasses-wearing spirit is actually connected to Keiko. Presented with the evidence Keiko explains that the ghost girl was someone she knew from two years ago who studied to get into university and never slept. She ignored the toll going without sleep was taking on her body and wound up becoming too sick to go and take the entrance exam. The spirit now tries to lull high school students to sleep to keep them from overworking themselves like she did. When Manabu insults the ghost, calling it "four eyes" Keiko starts to leave, but Manabu chases after her. Finally the gorgeous tutor admits that the glasses-wearing spirit is her from two years ago, her feelings of regret at overworking herself having become manifest as the spirit that lulls people to sleep. Rinne easily exorcises the ghost though Manabu's study habits do not improve much at all.

Chapter 80: リンクで待ってる
Rinku de motteru

(I'll Be Waiting at the Rink)
Sakura goes to the ice-skating rink one afternoon and soon notices the ghost of a young girl that angrily knocks everyone out of her way, saying that she has a special lesson that is soon to start and they must clear the rink for her. Of course only Sakura can see her, so she asks the girl who she's looking for. The ghost explains that she was supposed to give a special lesson to a boy named Shizuka Arakawara, and armed with this information Sakura tells Rinne about her findings. It so happens that Rinne is working a case for Shizuka who has been receiving letters from Yukina, the little ghost skater. Years ago he was supposed to meet with her at the skating rink but he fell ill with the flu and did not go to their special lesson. Yukina died shortly thereafter in an accident and now he has become her lingering attachment. Once they arrive at the rink Rinne dyes the girl with his paintball so that she can be seen by humans and then introduces her to Shizuka. Yukina doesn't recognize the boy any longer as he is now quite a few years older than the Shizuka she remembers. To solve this Rinne uses a Childhood Channeling Balloon that when inflated resembles a young Shizuka. Unfortunately the balloon would rather go home and play video games which infuriates Yukina.

Chapter 81: 補足注入
Hosoku chuunyuu

(Extra Infusion)
Little Shizuka insists that it was Yukina who hated him, and that she should not be surprised that he does not want to skate with her. He claims that she started ignoring him, and Yukina shoots back that she ignored him because he forced a kiss on her. Teenaged Shizuka ponders this for a moment and then recalls that he stumbled into Yukina while they were skating and did indeed accidently kiss her, which caused her a great deal of embarassment. Sakura talks to the little ghost who admits she wanted to make things right with Shizuka, that is why she called him out for the private meeting that he never showed up for. The ghost reveals that her father got transferred and she was going to move away soon. Little Shizuka hears this and after being reminded of his feelings for Yukina goes out and makes things right with the ghost who soon vanishes. With their work done, Rinne and Sakura leave the rink, just when the staff comes to ask for them to pay for all the damages.

Chapter 83: 数字の秘密
Suuji no himitsu

(The Secret of the Numbers)
Tsubasa continues to fall prey to tragic accidents like falling through open manholes while being pelted with bowling balls. Rinne watches as Yayoi's spirit continues to subject Tsubasa to her dangerous form of love, all the while he patiently endures his injuries. Rokumon finds the box of love letters and notices that under the lid is the number "nine" which leads Rinne to investigate the storehouse where the box was found. Once there he realizes that the man Yayoi loved kept boxes of love letters from countless suitors and the dejected girl was just one of many that he romanced. It is this empty feeling of not truly being loved that caused her to linger, and ultimately Tsubasa's methods of patiently tolerating her win out in the end. She tries to kill him so that he will pass on with her, but Rinne points out that if she did she would be sent to hell where her soul would never be reincarnated while Tsubasa's would. Unable to tolerate this separation, Yayoi peacefully passes on in hopes of finding Tsubasa again in her next life.

A new ramen restaurant opens near the school called "Ramen Kaedama". The shop offers really cheap bowls of ramen, which draws in students like flies. Rinne finds a request in his weather hutch from the restaurant asking for him to come because the head chef had become possessed by a spirit that lived in the building. When Rinne arrives he is shocked to be greeted by Ageha's who proceeds to unmask her sister. Rinne soon learns that the possessed chef is none other than his father who is being forced to work by an unseen spirit. Ageha's sister explains that their plan had been to lure students to the restaurant with their cheap prices and then take their souls to the afterlife, but with Sabato possessed their plan fell through. After work Rinne uses a special insense to smoke out the spirit who reveals himself to be an earnest, polite, hardworking ramen chef who asks if he can borrow Sabato's body to make ramen for another one hundred years. Shockingly Sabato obliges him, which makes Rinne suspicious.

Chapter 85: 目標の達成
Mokuhyou no tassei

(Goal Fulfillment)
The students from Sankai High continue to visit the Kaedama ramen shop and enjoy the meals being prepared by the Ramen Chef ghost. Rinne keeps a close eye on the place with Sakura and the pair notice that the students who finish their meals seem to leave in a trance-like state. Further inspection of the supposedly possessed Sabato reveals that the spirit of the Ramen Chef has possessed a Channeling Doll, a lifesize puppet that can function without rest. Additionally the ramen he makes uses a special Kaedama noodle that sucks the soul out of whomever eats in, which Sabato will then take to the afterlife. Sakura, Rinne and Ageha contront Sabato, who tells his son that he doesn't have the talent to remove the Chef from his false body. Rinne seemingly panics and runs away, but instead uses a payphone to place an order for 500 bowls of noodles to be delivered to the Damashigami Company. As the Chef's spirit attempts to fill the order, his Channeling Doll body breaks and he quickly re-possesses Sabato. Rinne gambles that completing an order that large would make the ghost so proud of his accomplishment that he would be able to move on. A gamble that pays off, but leaves Sabato's body on the verge of collapse from overwork. As the Kaedama noodle shop closes, the students leave messages telling the owner how much they will miss his delicious noodles.
