Chapter 149: リカバリークリーム
Rikabarii Kuriimu

(Recovery Cream)
Suffering from a painful toothache but with no money to visit a dentist, Rokumon bravely suffers in silence as best he can. Rinne tries to be supportive but Rokumon will have none of it. Suddenly Refuto and Raito arrive and try to market a new product to Rinne. Its a Recovery Cream that will not only fill chips and dings in a Shinigami's scythe, but completely regenerate broken and damaged pieces. As Rinne continually stops Refuto from breaking his scythe just so he can demonstrate the cream, Raito finally uses a small sickle and shows how well the product works. After everyone's gone, Rokumon takes it upon himself to pull his own tooth. Attaching it via string to the doorknob, he runs and jumps, popping the tooth out and knocking himself unconscious in the process. His pulled tooth falls and pierces a sample packet of the regenerative cream. Outside the school Tsubasa sees what looks like Rokumon chasing a group of schoolgirls. After tossing some sacred ashes at him Rokumon attacks, but the fight is interrupted by Rinne. Rinne finds the packet of cream stuck to "Rokumon's" back and then suddenly the real Rokumon arrives and starts to fight his evil clone. Unfortunately the clone of Rokumon is more powerful and easily defeats the real Rokumon. Rinne catches Refuto and Raito peeking from the bushes. Refuto decides to help fix the problem by using a special spray that will dissolve the fixative and destroy what it created. The Rokumon clone attacks and shreds the spray and and then turns on Rinne and slices up his scythe just like it was paper. Raito steps up with more of the liquid that will undo the spray, and Sakura and Tsubasa realize that its just ordinary water. As soon as it starts to rain, the clone Rokumon dissolves around the tooth he grew out of, and Raito tries to sell Rinne some of the less-than-useful cream to repair his blade.

Chapter 150: 夢の相合い傘
Yume no aiaigasa

(The Dream of a Shared Umbrella)
Walking to school in the rain one day, Sakura notices a ghost girl following a young man under an umbrella. Suddenly she clonks him in the head with the umbrella and then disappears as it goes floating away on a gust of wind into the sky. Rika and Miho tell of similar events happening to other male students at the school, and Sakura reports the troubling story to Rinne. It seems that the spirit resembles a second year student who is getting blamed for the chaos. Rinne and Sakura walk outside, hoping to lure the spirit out, and when Rinne stands alone in the rain she appears and offers him her umbrella. As soon as the shinigami hits her with one of his paintballs to make her visible she hits back, striking him with the umbrella and letting it fly away into the sky. After reporting back to the second year student they learn that she had hoped to share an umbrella with a handsome young boy who rushed away from her, and her longing desire has manifested itself in the form of the umbrella spirit. Rinne tracks down the spirit and lures her back to the school to show her the student walking under an umbrella with her beau, thinking that she will vanish now that her creator has gotten her wish. Surprisingly she attacks the real girl and pushes her aside so she can walk with the handsome boy instead.

Notes:
  • "Excuse me, but aren't those legitimate union activities?" - Although labor unions have existed in Japan since the 1890s the government largely kept them in check until the post-war occupation of Japan. In December 1945 the "Labor Union Law" was enacted in Japan that set up the first modern labor unions following World War II. By 1950 there was a split between more centrist and left-leaning labor groups which eventually lead to the creation of the General Council of Trade Unions (Sohyo/総評) which served as the umbrella organization for nearly half of all labor unions in Japan. Sohyo eventually merged with Rengo (連合) in 1987.
  • When Renge goes to her labor union meeteing she is wearing a vest that reads "だまし神カンパニー 給料を上げる" (Demashigami Kanpanii Kyuryo o ageru/Demashigami Company Raise Our Salary). The vest she wears is a common sight at labor protests and during union activities in Japan.

Chapter 152: 右腕貸します
Migiude kashimasu

(Lend Me Your Right Hand)
Sakura, Miho and Rika walk to school one morning while Rinne flies overhead. It's test day in class and Sakura notices something odd about the mechanical pencil Rinne is using on his geometry test. In fact his fingernails look quite feminine as he holds the pencil. Days later the teacher compliments Renge on her high score with Rinne scoring quite high as well. Everyone seems shocked by Rinne's performance, but he simply shrugs it off. On the roof of the school Renge confronts Rinne about his use of the magical mechanical pencil. Sakura and Tsubasa secretly listen in and the young exorcist angrily condemns Rinne for cheating. Suddenly energry crackles around Rinne's arm and three different hands appear, one with a business man's sleeve, a girl's arm and a boy's. Rinne seems unphased by their criticism and takes the group to the afterlife to explain. It seems there are some spirits waiting to be reincarnated who have special skills that they wish to use before passing on. Because Rinne is the only shinigami attends school, he is given the responsibility of letting any souls that want to take tests use his arm to do so. While there, Rinne speaks to an English speaking foreigner who hopes to show off his knowledge on an English exam Rinne will be taking. Renge is frustrated to see that Rinne's "cheating" is actually helping spirits pass on. Back at school Rinne gets the results of his English test which he failed miserably. As it turns out the spirit couldn't read the Japanese questions and bombed the test. Rinne heads back to the afterlife and asks the Japanese spirits if any of them can speak English. Despite his humility it seems he is more concerned about his grades than he lets on.

Notes:
  • Tsubasa says that the bathhouse in the afterlife is like a スーパー銭湯 (Suupaa Sento/Super Sento), a "super bathhouse" which is a term for a large, deluxe public bath. Hairdressers and massage chairs may be available at some of these venues. These large scale bathhouses began to appear in Japan around 1985.
  • The stamps on the spirits point cards all look like the Wheel of Reincarnation. The wheel itself is an important part of Buddhist iconography. In Sanskrit "wheel" is "chakra" and Shakyamuni (the human name of Buddha) is said to have "turned the wheel of law" for the first time when he gave his sermon in the Deer Park. Consequently the wheel represents Buddha's teachings.
  • "On an added note, they can currently receive double points because now it's a pre-obon service!" - Obon is a Japanese Buddhist festival that honors the spirits of the departed.
  • The onomatopoeia that appears around the foreigner that thanks Rinne says "ペラペラ" (perapera). This is the "sound" of fluent speaking.

Chapter 153: 逃げる人
Nigeru hito

(The Runaway)
Walking home one summer evening after playing tennis, Miho and Rika tell a story about a person being attacked by an invisible, supernatural force that causes them to slap at themselves. Just then a man runs out of the darkness screaming as something assaults him. Of course this sends the girls running, and Sakura promptly reports what she saw to Rinne. When she arrives at the club house she finds Tamako visiting her grandson. Rinne leaves with Sakura to patrol for anything suspicious and finds an overweight man in glasses being attacked by the invisible presense. When Rinne attacks it, the thing dissolves into a smokey haze and quickly reforms. Once the mist clears Sakura and Rinne find a floating katori senko (a pig shaped mosquito repellant). It seems the stings that have been attacking people are the phantom stings of mosquitos. The katori senko attacks Rinne, Sakura and Rokumon and then quickly flees when Rinne gets too close. Using one of the paintballs, Rokumon is able to make the tiny mosquito ghosts visible, and they watch as one grows huge after feeding on Rinne's arm. Using Rinne's blood the mosquito draws a spiral on the ground and then the katori senko returns. Tamako arrives just in time with a spiral of mosquito repellant and subdues the piggy, switching him off and ending its terror.

Takara no kawa

(Treasure River)
Rinne uses a basket to pan for items left behind by the recently deceased as they head across a river toward the Wheel of Reincarnation. He finds a pearl necklace which he brings to Kain to appraise. Rokumon finds a solid gold bar, but is too small to pull it out of the river himself. Not wanting Rinne to find it, he transforms into his floating cat head form, bites Rinne and spits him into the air. Nearby, Shoma and Kurosu pull a locked box from the river, but Rinne falls from the sky, knocking them unconscious and takes it for himself.Rinne is overjoyed at what he finds inside and runs to tell Rokumon about it. Meanwhile, Rokumon has managed to fish out the gold bar, and carries it hidden within his mouth. As Rinne finds him and discusses sharing the contents of the box, Rokumon begins to tear up at Rinne's generosity, while he was planning on keeping the gold all for himself. Rokumon feels so bad that he gives Rinne the gold bar, only to find that the box Rinne found was totally empty. Rinne delivers the bar to Kain for appraisal but gets involved in a fight between Kain and Suzu and has the gold knocked away. All the other shinigami and black cats spy it and rush to obtain it before it ends up in Rokumon's paws. As he carries it, the weight of the gold drags him underwater, where he quickly is forced to let go and watch it sink into the depths and away from everyone.

  • The sign at Kain's booth says "appraisal spot" (鑑定所/kanteisho).
  • In Rokumon's dream he and Rinne go to eat at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. These are called 回転寿司 (kaitenzushi). You pay your bill by showing the number of plates you ate with the color of the plate indicating the price of each item.
  • Kurosu calls Shoma "bocchama" (ぼっちゃま) which means "little sir" or "little master". It is the way a servant would refer to their master's very young child as opposed to "wakasama" (若様) or "wakadanna" (若旦那).
  • Flower making - Rinne is frequently shown making silk flowers by the boxload. Historically this has been considered a job for the poorest of the poor, something they could do from home and then sell to a distributor. Here is a photograph from 1910 showing an impoverished family making silk flowers in England. You can read more about multiple generations of a single family and their home-based flower trade here.

He sets about rebuilding a better looking girl. In the process he drowned and the necklace washed up on shore where Nagisa finally found it and kept it. Telling Satoru this allows him to pass on peacefully. Back at the inn the group learns that the Innkeeper is Nagisa all grown up, and she was just making up the story of the necklaces causing people to drown so that she could collect them and sell them at her inn.

Notes:
  • A double issue means that Shonen Sunday did not run an issue the following week, usually due to a holiday.
  • Tsubasa is wearing a yukata with crosses on it. This is because his last name, Jumonji (十文字) means "cross" or "crucifix".
  • Sakura's yukata has cherry blossoms which is a reference to her name.
  • Rinne's yukata has the Wheel of Reincarnation on it (which is also the Buddhist "Wheel of the Law"). Kain's has the same motif.
  • Renge is inviting people to play 風船釣り (fusen tsuri/balloon fishing) at her stand. With this game the competitor is given a hook (usually made of a paper clip) and a line (made of paper) that they have to dip and hook a water balloon from a pool. The player has to be careful because if the paper line gets wet the weight of the water balloon will cause it to break easily.
  • The small monkey-like mask that Suzu wears depicts "Kawaii Cook-san". There is a children's song that discusses how to draw the character. He also appeared in chapter 32 and in Urusei Yatsura in chapter 199 and chapter 200 as Salt No. 1.
  • Sakura's fan says "祭" (matsuri/festival).
