Rinne injects the creature with a serum designed to drive the cicada spirit out, and the boy is returned to his human form temporarily, but the spirit continues to latch onto him. Finally it is driven out when the girl agrees to listen to a recording he made for her, and the cicada leaves once it is allowed to play its song.

Chapter 160: 怨み無限大
Urami mugendai

(Infinite Curse)
Raito and Refuto arrive at Rinne's tiny apartment bearing a chainsaw on a pole which they hope to sell as a scythe-like weapon, only they were hoping he might be able to purify it first. Ageha arrives and decides she'll be more than happy to test the chainsaw/scythe out. With her new weapon in hand, she walks next door to Renge's apartment and promptly ruins her scythe by grinding the chainsaw against its blade. It turns out that Refuto used iron mined from a cursed field to create this chainsaw, and now it has a tendency to attack other shinigami scythes. Ageha uses an aresol spray to try to purify the demonic spirits that has invested the chainsaw, but the spray only causes them to leap out and start devouring her own scythe. Suddenly Kain arrives to make an inspection and the chainsaw scars his mirror as well. Soon the demonic spirits are multiplying and destroying everyone's scythes, leaving impoverished Rinne to have to shell out his pittance of money to Raito and Refuto to repair his damaged weapon.

Chapter 161: 畳の手
Tatami no te

(Tatami Hand)
Sakura visits the tea ceremony club and learns that the female members are having trouble sitting still when they pour tea because ghostly hands emerge from the tatami mats on the floor and rub their legs and feet. Rinne agrees to look into it and finds that a mysterious boy is peeping at the girls of the club. Rinne falls over as he attempts to give chase and the boy escapes outdoors. Sakura and Rinne manage to catch up with the girls from the club right behind them. They learn that the boy used to enjoy rolling around on the comfortable tatami mats of the tea room, until one day he knocked over his food and ruined one of the mats. He tried his best to clean it up but couldn't, so he hid the mess by flipping the mat over. Upon returning to the room they find the stain and Rinne applies a Tsukumogami Seal to the mat to see what secrets it reveals. As the mat comes to life, it immediately attacks the boy who stained it. Placing the seal on the mat that the girls sit on, reveals a very happy mat with very grabby hands, happy to have cute girls sitting on top of it. Rinne's solution is to take the tatami mats for himself and use them in his room.

Notes:
  • The beckoning cat (招き猫/maneki neko) is a sign of good fortune in Japan. These are believed to bring good luck to their owner and depict a cat with a koban coin in one paw. The cat's coin is a koban coin with the kanji 千万両 (sen man ryo) meaning "ten million ryo". In the anime adaptation the kanji "呪" (curse) written on its bib instead of the kanji on the coin.
  • One of the cursed items in the Treasure House where Sabato steals the beckoning cat from is the faux mermaid. This is referenced in Takahashi's Mermaid Series chapter 12. There are also a number of cursed dolls that resemble the curse doll from Ranma 1/2 chapter 331.
  • Renge's work with the labor union was first mentioned in chapter 151.
  • When Rinne shoves his father from behind the decoy has a "Heno Heno Moheji" face.

Chapter 163: 七日たったら明けること
Nanoka tatara akeru koto

(Open After Seven Days)
At her house one afternoon Ageha has Oboro searching the attic. He discovers an old box with a message that says "open after seven days" scrawled across the lid. Ageha recognizes the handwriting as her own from elementary school and the box begins to rattle and shake. In a flash something breaks free and crashes through Ageha's window, quickly making its escape. At Sankai High, Sakura, Rinne, Tsubasa and Renge all sense the presense of something quickly approaching the school. Suddenly a giant straw voodoo doll pushes the window open and steps into the classroom, unseen by all except the spiritually gifted. Rinne immediately recognizes it as a shinigami teaching tool from an elementary school. The doll immediately attacks Renge who battles it as the rest of the class continues, unable to see the fight in their midst. The straw doll uses its nail to scratch the chalk board sending everyone fleeing the room at there ear-grating noise. Ageha arrives and Renge quickly realizes that she is the one responsible for the doll's attack. Thinking back to their elementary school days, it turns out that Renge and Ageha were partnered to practice breaking curses using the dolls. A hair of the victim is placed in one doll which is then left inside a box that should be placed in a dark and gloomy area. Ageha was responsible for making the cursed doll, while Renge made the curse breaking doll. The teacher warned them that after seven days the cursed doll must be let out of its box or it could turn out to be a big problem. Of course Ageha forgot to let the doll out and it stewed in its box for years growing more and more powerful. With wards set up around Renge's room to keep her from being attack, Rinne sets out to destroy the doll. Unfortunately all the damage he does to it is transfered to Renge due to her hair being placed inside the doll all those years ago. Renge steals a strand of Ageha's hair and slips it into the doll, causing it to attack her as well. Rinne quickly returns with dozens of tennis racquet weilding dolls that are used to fight against the cursed straw dolls and after much effort the giant straw man is brought down.

Chapter 164: 魔の4コース
Ma no 4 koosu

(Devil in the Fourth Lane)
Rinne, Tsubasa, Sakura and Renge are all chosen to do a one hundred meters relay race together on an intergender team. Most of the team are indifferent when the teacher announces that the winner will get to have anpan, but Rinne and Renge, who are both impoverished and have no money for sweets are thrilled with the rather lackluster prize. On the day of the race, the team quickly learns that there is something odd going on at the track. It seems whomever runs in the fourth lane always drops the baton as they try to pass it. Sakura pratices with Renge but as soon as she tries to pass the baton, a ghost runs in and grabs it from her. The ghost explains that he had been in training for a relay race when he saved a dog that darted out into traffic. Unfortunately he died saving the animal and now he lingers on earth wishing to get his chance to run in a race. Rinne is barely interested in helping the spirit, instead he lusts after the sweet anpan he hopes to win. Tsubasa tries to get Rinne to let the ghost run on their team and when Rinne seems hesitant, Tsubasa asks if he really cares more about winning the anpan than helping a ghost to try and make him look bad in front of Sakura. Rinne reluctantly agrees, and the race starts. Things begin well with Sakura, but when she tries to pass the baton to Rinne, the ghost jumps out and snatches it from her and starts running in the wrong direction. Renge helps turn things around and the ghost tosses the baton away, which Rinne manages to catch and make up for lost time. When the ghost once again fouls up another baton pass, Rinne uses his paper dolls to make hell hounds to chase the other runners in the wrong direction. Unfortunately everyone blazes past the ghost and he finishes in last place, costing Rinne his anpan. Despite the poor performance, the ghost happily passes on into the next world.

Chapter 165: 月に願いを
Tsuki ni negai wo

(Wish Upon the Moon)
Late one evening Rinne finds Raito and Refuto loudly hammering on the roof of his home, after investigating Refuto tells him he is building an altar to help them commune with a guardian spirit who will assist them in their smithing business. Each year during the first new moon of autumn Raito and Refuto help to welcome the spirit and this year, Rinne's house just happened to be the spot on their map where they were supposed to greet the spirit. Raito offers Rinne a "fun part time job" and places tsukimi dango on the altar. Both Rinne and Rokumon assume the dessert is for them, but Raito tells them they are not allowed to eat it, as she is leaving it as an offering for the guardian spirit and she will let Rinne guard it for them. Rinne and Rokumon reluctantly agree to stay and watch over the tsukimi dango for a paltry sum of three hundred yen. They resist their temptation to eat, and fend off the ghost of a samurai who tries to sneak one of the sweet treats for himself. Soon dozens of ghosts arrive wishing to steal the tsukimi dango. Rokumon realizes that the dango are summoning all the nearby spirits, not just the moon spirit that Raito and Refuto hoped to call. Rokumon decides that he should just eat the dango to disperse the spirits, but when he tires Raito and Refuto leap out at hit him, prompting Rinne to realize they had been watching the entire time. Finally the guardian spirit of the moon arrives- a giant rabbit who belly flops onto the altar, crushing it underneath his massive body. Rokumon has to quickly gather up the dango before the ghosts eat them and when they are offered to the spirit, he refuses claiming he is on a diet and then saying he has a toothache. Refuto tells Rinne that each year they try to win the spirit's favor but he always refuses to eat. This year Refuto crams the tsukimi dango down his throat causing him to let out a burst of light, which Refuto hopes will bless them with good fortune. The guardian mumbles some muffled words that no one can understand because he is speaking with his mouth full of pieces of dango and the altar that Refuto used to pry his mouth open and then he vanishes, leaving no one able to understand his advice.

Notes:
  • The joke about a guardian deity on the moon that Raito and Refuto want to commune with is a joke based on the fact they are rabbits. According to Japanese mythology there the shadowy craters on the surface of the moon make the image of a rabbit, and so the rabbit has long been associated with the moon. Rumiko Takahashi's short series MOON the Great Pet King deals with a similar gag.
  • The food that Raito presents for the moon-viewer are Tsukimi Dango (月見団子). These are white rice dumplings that are arranged into a pyramid shape to offer to the moon and are commonly eaten during "Tsukimi" (月見) the moon-viewing festivals that take place 15th day of the eighth month (full moon) and 13th day of the ninth month (waxing moon) of the traditional Japanese calendar. That roughly places these festivals in September and October.
  • "We're going to pick some silver grass and decorate the altar." - During the moon-viewing festivals in addition to serving tsukimi dango susuki grass (Japanese pampas grass) is often used as a decoration.
  • The small altar that is shown where the rabbits hope to place their business blessing also features a shimenawa (標縄), "enclosing ropes". They are made to ward off evil spirits. They are typically placed around yorishiro (依り代) which are objects capable of attracting spirits such as trees. Hanging from the shimenawa are zig-zag pieces of paper called shide (紙垂). They are often hung from shimenawa or are attached to the wands of shinto priests for purification ceremonies. The guardian spirit also has a shimenawa and shide around his neck.

Chapter 166: 謎の狛犬
Nazo no komainu

(The Mystery of the Lion-Dog)
Rika and Miho tell Sakura about a ghostly rumor they heard. It seems the ghost of a komainu (lion dog) was seen floating about and ramming into a komainu statue as if it were trying to possess it. As the girls walk past a temple, Sakura witnesses the ghost attempting to enter the statue with her own eyes. Rather than run away as they usually do, Miho and Rika snap a picture of the statue, capturing an image of the ghostly creature on their cellphones. Once they notice the presense of a ghost priestess hovering near the animal, they panic and flee as usual. At school Sakura tells Tsubasa about what she saw, explaining that the ghostly priestess's presense had a great deal of spiritual noise distorting it. Tsubasa volunteers to investigate with Sakura, secretly planning on the meeting to be a date more than anything else. Elsewhere Rinne and Rokumon are flying over the city when they notice the komainu chasing the ghosts of a fox and a dog. Rokumon points out that it must be a tsukumogami, an object that has had a particularly long existance and becomes sentient. Rinne lassos the meddlesome animal, but it drags him along as it struggles to escape. Finally the dog sees Tsubasa and Sakura walking together below and bites down on Tsubasa's head. Rinne and Rokumon explain that komainu are very territorial, and what likely happened is this particular creature was chased away by another komainu when it entered its territory and so it tried to flee back to the statue it was born from. Tsubasa seems satisfied with Rinne's answer and tries to continue his date with Sakura, but they immediately spot the ghostly priestess watching them from nearby. Tsubasa throws sacred ashes on her, but then Tsubasa calls her "Ayame Sakaki" and seems to recognize her. He explains she was merely an acquaintence, but this seems to hurt the ghost's feelings and she showers Tsubasa with toy snakes and then leaves a note for him that reads simply, "idiot". Tsubasa explains that she was a middle school classmate of his, and Rinne explains that she must have become an evil spirit.

Chapter 167: ご本人登場!
Gohonnin toujou!

(The Introduction of the Actual Person!)
Tsubasa recalls his interactions wtih Ayame Sakaki from his middle school days, watching her wrangle ghosts and battle evil spirits. Tsubasa tells Rinne and Sakura that he changed schools before he got to know the girl, yet Rinne wonders why such a tangential relationship would keep Ayame's spirit here on the mortal plane. Soon the ghost girl returns and starts tormenting Tsubasa while Rinne tries to exorcise her. The spirit flees and everyone chases it down the street until they come upon a girl and watch the spirit try to enter her- it turns out she is in fact the real Ayame Sakaki and the spirit is actually a spirit of vengence spawned by the girl's hatred. When the spirit slips back into her, Ayame dons a pair of glasses and claims not to remember Tsubasa when he introduces himself to her. It takes her a moment to recall Tsubasa who doused her with sacred ashes once. It seems her forgotten hatred of Tsubasa isn't enough to have spawned a vengeful spirit. Tsubasa says he respects Ayame's ability to control her vengeful spirit, which seems to impress her, until he adds that she could use it to help them before she goes home. Her spirit knocks him out and she goes with Rinne and Sakura to collect the lion-dog after explaining that it is the lion-dog from her family's temple. As she is preparing to leave with the animal, her spirit pops out, snatches the animals leash and takes off. Rinne realizes that Ayame might not have as much control over her spirit as she had suggested and that it could be very dangerous to let it run loose like this. Sakura suggests to the girl that perhaps she let her spirit escape because she really does not want to go back home, a suggestion that seems to hit close to home when Tsubasa wakes and Ayame becomes flustered in his presense once more. Unfortunately for Tsubasa, the spirit returns to knock him out as soon as it realizes he is awake once again.

Chapter 168: 生霊の願い
Ikiryo no negai

(The Evil Spirit's Wish)
Ayame thinks back to the day in middle school when Tsubasa transfered into her class and how much she wanted to talk to him and introduce herself. Unfortunately before she had the chance to speak to him, his father's work caused him to leave the school just a short time later. Rinne points out to Ayame that this unrealized desire must be what is causing her to manifest the evil spirit that keeps causing everyone so much trouble. Ayame insists that after Tsubasa moved away she was too focused on her training to give him any further thought and Rinne wonders if his supposition is wrong. Elsewhere Sakura and Rokumon find Tsubasa knocked out in the street with Ayame's spirit hovering over him. When he wakes Sakura asks him if there was really nothing between him and his former classmate. Tsubasa assures her that there was not, but then mentions he was only there for such a short time that he may be overlooking something. Suddenly he recalls that on his last day he had what he thought was a love letter left in his locker, but when he opened it he found a paper charm- a spirit ward. Suddenly Ayame's spirit looks stunned, and Tsubasa goes on to explain that on the way home from school that day he encountered an evil spirit and tossed the ward at it but it failed to work so instead he had to use his sacred ashes. Rinne and Ayame arrive and explain that it was in fact not a ward, but simply a slip of paper with her phone number and email address written on it. Ayame explains that she was simply impressed by Tsubasa's exorcism techniques and hoped he might share some tips with her. Rinne unravels the true reason Ayame wanted to get in touch with Tsubasa- it is because she has very limited control over her vengeful spirit and she was trying to use the lion dog to find him. Rinne tells Ayame that she will have to go on a date with Tsubasa to help resolve this issue and Tsubasa happily obliges. By the end of the date Ayame nervously tries to give Tsubasa her phone number again and this time he accepts. Ayame leaves to head home, but forgets to collect her lion dog as she happily dashes away.
