Chapter 169: 一獲千金キノコ狩り
Ikkakusenkin kinoko gari

(The Get Rich Quick Mushroom Hunt)
Rinne and Kain help to coordinate a mushroom hunt for the Black Cats by Contract. Once the cats find the mushrooms they bring them to Kain who will reimburse them depending on which kinds of mushrooms they find. Rokumon looks through a guide, hoping to find the most expensive mushrooms, while Oboro lazily complains and Suzu proclaims that she wants to simply eat all the ones she finds. Rinne warns the cats that the more expensive mushrooms are very dangerous to pick and recommends they do not attempt them. Rinne and Kain both have to warn Suzu to be careful when she immediately picks and almost devours a poisonous mushroom. Upon seeing his rival, Kain demands to know why Rinne is there. As it turns out impoverished Rinne is earning 500 yen for his work. It seems that mushrooms are a useful ingredient in many afterlife products including medicine, food, and poisons. Oboro and Rokumon stumble upon some strange creatures called "the mushroom eaters," the Kuekue Dake, that are gathering up mushrooms for themselves. As they ponder what to do, Kurosu arrives and explains how dangerous and valuable the mushrooms are that the Kuekue Dake are collecting with each one fetching 100,000 yen. Suzu and Rokumon both attack the Kuekue Dake but when they try to bite them the poisons in their bodies send the cats scurrying away. Rinne hears Rokumon's cries and Kain tells him about the 100,000 yen mushrooms in the area. This immediately piques Rinne's curiosity and he sneaks away to investigate. He finds Oboro trying to slice one apart which immediately causes it to release poisonous spores. Kurosu then uses his magic wand to ensnare them in a net, but that too fails to stop the dangerous creatures. The Kuekue Dake seem to flee, but Rinne soon realizes that they were inadventently leading him to a patch of unpicked matsutake mushrooms. Rinne and the black cats then load up the matsutake mushrooms and return to Kain hoping to cash in. As soon as they turn in their mushrooms, the spores the Kuekue Dake sprayed them with start to grow into full-size mushroom eaters and immediately devour everyone's mushrooms. Kain immediately uses some shinigami tools called "capture cans" to trap the Kuekue Dame spores and package them for sale. He tells Rinne that the price he'll fetch for the canned Kuekue Dame will cover the cost of damage to everyone else's harvested mushrooms.

Chapter 170: 長い話
Nagai hanashi

(The Long Talk)
Sitting on the edge of a building's roof late one night, Rinne has a conversation with the ghost of an old man. Rinne patiently listens to him discussing his problems until the sun rises, leaving the young shinigami exhausted the next day at school. Sakura, Rika and Miho stop by the nurse's office to let Rika rest, but Sakura notices a black shape laying in the bed. As soon as Rika hops in it she is tossed to the floor. Sakura asks Rinne to investigate, but he is so tired he can barely hear the nurse out when she explains the nature of the phenomenon. Using one of his paintballs, Rinne reveals the spirit that is sleeping in the bed- a young boy who mumbles in his sleep that he does not want to wake up. Sakura points out that his school uniform is not from Sankai High and Rokumon mentions that he must be a wandering spirit. The ghost explains that he was a senior in high school who was preparing for his college entrance exams. He studied day and night, because of "Akira". Rinne asks who this Akira is, and the ghost explains that he was his childhood friend who was in the same class with him at school. The two boys became rivals and both tried to get into the same university. The ghost rambles on, explaining about his problems with Akira in elementary school and Rinne struggles to listen until finally he simply falls asleep, which irritates the ghost. The ghost struggled in his studies, hoping that he could at least get a higher score than Akira. He worked so hard at home on his studies that he would simply fall asleep in the nurse's office when he went to school each day. Rather than listen, Rinne climbs into bed with the ghost and goes to sleep. Just then Tsubasa wanders in and wants to take a nap as well, but upon finding the bed taken by Rinne he dumps his sacred ashes on him, prompting Rinne to toss him out the window. The ghost reveals that Akira came to him and got onto him for studying too hard to the detriment of his own health. Sakura and Rinne soon realize that Akira is not a boy, but a girl. Akira begged the boy to change his school and aim for one that would not require such a rigorous exam, but he insisted he wanted to go to the same school as her so they could be together. Rinne lies to the ghost, telling him if he finishes his exams he can be with Akira as much as he wants. Overjoyed, the ghost fades away, happily letting go of his urge to sleep.

Chapter 171: 鍋と奉行
Nabe to bugyou

(Hot Pot and the Magistrate)
Ageha arrives at Rinne's apartment bearing groceries with plans to make a hot pot for him. Rinne and Rokumon both think they've hit the jackpot until Ageha kicks the Rinne's black cat partner out so that she can have him alone for their meal. Not wanting to be left out Rokumon fetches Sakura and Tsubasa and invites them over to enjoy the meal as well. When the group looks into the pot though they see a strange little samurai sitting in the bottom of the bowl amidst the boiling water. Rinne fishes him out and tosses him away, deciding he'd rather eat than sort out any strange phenomena. Ageha tells everyone that she found the bowl in her basement and Rokumon finds a set of instructions inside the box explain that the pot is possessed by the spirit of a magistrate. It seems the "hot pot magistrate" was the one responsible for deciding what ingredients were placed into the pot and when everyone was allowed to begin eating the contents. Only Tsubasa feels a need to respect the magistrate when it comes to eating the hot pot. Rokumon tries to eat it, but because he is a cat he cannot tolerate the hot temperature of the food. Rinne devours a piece and is immediately overjoyed. While everyone is distracted, the magistrate decides he'll steal all the eggs from the hot pot and quickly flees with them. With only one egg left, everyone begins to fight over it until Renge and her black cat wander in and the kitty gulps it down.

Chapter 172: マネ子とコト美
Maneko to Kotomi

(Maneko and Kotomi)
Walking home one gloomy winter afternoon, Sakura and Miho comment on Rika's new coat which she says she found at the market for the incredibily cheap price of only twenty yen. Miho jokingly asks if the coat is haunted for it to be sold cheaply, though Rika insists that is not the case. No sooner does she say this than the girls turn around and find a tattered naked female mannequin following behind them looking rather sinister. As usual, Rika and Miho immediately flee, but the mannequin chases after them until they come across Tsubasa and beg for his help. His sacred ashes score a direct hit and the haunted mannequin immediately flees. Everyone takes the coat to Rinne to see what he thinks, and Rika tells him about the girl wearing a cat earred hat that sold her the jacket, claiming it had only been worn once. She even offered to throw in a charm bracelet, t-shirts, sweets and tickets, anything to be rid of the coat. Rika curses her short-sightedness and then offers to sell Rinne the coat for thirty yen. Leaving the coat with Rinne, Rika and Miho take their leave and the shinigami uses a tsukumogami seal to allow the coat to talk to him. Springing to life the coat immediately starts grumbling about being sold off again. The coat explains every time it finds a new owner "she" comes along and ruins things- Maneko the Mannequin. Once Kotomi the Coat and Maneko the Mannequin were friends and lived together in a shop window until the shop eventually went out of business and they were separated. Kotomi explains that it was eventually sold through a second-hand store, but soon after it was bought Maneko showed up and scared away its owner. Because Maneko continues to follow Kotomi, it constantly passes from one owner to the next. Sakura agrees to wear Kotomi to try to lure out Maneko. When the mannequin arrives Kotomi suddenly leaps off of Sakura and pulls out a metal bat before attacking Maneko much to everyone's horror. Sakura tells Kotomi that Maneko does not seem to harbor any ill will, and they notice the mannequin muttered something about a "cow" when it greeted the coat. Maneko explains that it had been sent to the junkyard where it was waiting to be destroyed when it suddenly remembered something it had forgotten to tell Kotomi. Rather than "cow" (ushi), Maneko was trying to say "behind" (ushiro). Sakura checks the back of Kotomi and finds it has a pin stuck in its collar; Maneko was trying to tell Kotomi it should take the pin out or risk sticking its new owner. With that, Maneko turns to leave, but Kotomi cries out and leaps on the mannequin's back, hugging it and apologizing for being so mean to its old friend. With its final desire fulfilled, Maneko's soul is able to pass into the next world. Rika winds up taking the coat back, as Rinne tries to make her pay for the exorcism.

Chapter 173: 特別ボーナス
Tokubetsu bonasu

(Special Bonus)
Renge is shocked when Sabato calls her in to tell her that she's up for a special bonus for her work at the Damashigami Company. Renge assumes that Sabato is joking until he removes a thick envelop and shows her he's being quite serious. Back in the world of the living Rokumon arrives and shows Rinne a wanted poster that has been distributed showing his father stealing things. Rinne is stunned when he sees the reward for Sabato is a measly (yet impressive to Rinne) 1,000 yen. Rinne proclaims he'll use the powerful Ring of Judgement to capture his father and gain the reward. Just as Sabato is about to hand Renge her money Rinne, Sakura and Rokumon teleport next to him and catch him with the Ring of Judgement. Renge attacks Rinne in order to try to get her bonus money from Sabato, and the melee gives Rinne's father time to flee the scene. They try to explain to Renge that Sabato earned the money by stealing and reselling goods, but she seems unmoved until Kain arrives. As usual, Kain accuses Rinne of sheltering his father, before asking Renge to help him apprehend Sabato. Kain still does not realize that Renge actually works for the Damashigami Company and is in Sabato's employment. Rinne dashes past Kain and Renge and she quickly realizes that if Rinne catches Sabato before she gets her bonus, he'll get a reward and her money will be taken as evidence of his crimes. Renge knocks out Kain and asks Rinne if he will let her retrieve her bonus money before turning his father in for the reward. Rinne, always stalwart, refuses to help her. Renge tries to manipulate Rinne, telling him if it was not for his father she would have been an elite Shinigami by now rather than missing her entrance exams. Finally Rinne relents and Renge wakes up Kain to help them track down Sabato.

Chapter 174: 知られたくない
Shiraretakunai

(I Don't Want to Know)
Renge and Kain search for Rinne's fugitive father, Sabato. Kain recounts all the goods Sabato has stolen, the money from which he was going to pay Renge a sizable bonus. Kain summons some dogs to help him track Rinne's father, but Renge uses hot dogs to lure them off his scent, hoping that Rinne will find Sabato first and swipe her bonus before it gets impounded as evidence. Elsewhere Rinne, Sakura and Rokumon bait Sabato by using Sakura's wallet under a simple basket proped up by a stick. Sabato immediately materializes and snatches the pocketbook before scolding Rinne for trying to sell out his own father for a mere 1,000 yen reward. Kain and Renge arrive, causing the damashigami girl to panic, realizing Rinne has not managed to get her money. She hits Kain with a smoke bomb while Rinne knocks out his father and drags him through a portal and slips the envelope out of his yukata. Sabato wakes and escapes with his money while Kain and Renge wait at her small club room home. Renge is surprised when Kain tells her that if she has any concerns he'd like her to share them with him. Sabato appears and runs through her home, immediately ruining their touching moment before fleeing again. Kain manages to stop him from escaping with his stolen goods, but then wonders aloud why he was bringing them to Renge's home. Realizing her cover is about to be blow, Rinne steps in, apologizing and explaining that because she is his next door neighbor she has gotten dragged into his problems with his father. Kain departs and Rokumon gives Renge the envelope with the bonus that he was able to snatch from Sabato. Opening it, she is shocked to find that it is not money but only a simple raffle ticket.

Chapter 175: 思い出発掘
Omoide Hakkutsu

(Excavation of Memories)
Rinne and Sakura visit Tamako's home in the afterlife during the New Year's holidays and are surprised when they arrive and find it filled with overturned boxes and generally messy. Tamako says that this is the first time in fifty years she's had a chance to clean house. Rinne explains to Sakura that as a child he lived with his grandparents in the afterlife where they rented a home. During that time they amassed quite a bit of furniture which now sits unused in huge piles in Tamako's home. Rinne and Rokumon are thrilled when they find a futon inside Tamako's storage room, but when they try to pull it out the mountain of tables and chairs collapses upon them. Among the things that tumble out of the pile is an old photo album showing Rinne when he was a little boy. As Sakura looks at the photos she realized that Rinne went to both a shinigami elementary school and a human school as well. When Rinne criticizes Tamako for putting off her cleaning duties she asks Rinne if he'd really like to have some dark family secret exposed in front of Sakura. Tamako pulls out a photo album showing Rinne's middle school days where it seems he was a bit of a delinquent who liked to spray paint walls and flip up girls' skirts. Sakura points out that the photos are actually of Rinne's father, Sabato, who promptly arrives and presents Rinne's real middle school album which shows he was a very serious, diligent student. Sabato uses this to disract everyone while he "helps" clean the house by stealing everything in sight. Tamako chases Sabato away and saves her old furnishings and they manage to organize all the items in a tidy way. Once everything is neatly placed a strange sound can be heard. Suddenly a giant black cat's paw shoots out of the ground, knocking everything down. The huge black cat with a white star on his head climbs out of one of the closets that was blocked. Tamako immediately recognizes him as Kuroboshi, her black cat. Rinne says he has not seen the cat in ages and assumed he had retired. Kuroboshi explains that he was helping Tamako move her things into the storage room when he became trapped behind the furniture as movers added more and more things before he had a chance to get out. With the house now in a mess again, Tamako says she'd rather take a break than get everything sorted nicely again.

Chapter 176: 黒星三世
Kuroboshi sansei

(Kuroboshi III)
Tamako arrives at Rinne's apartment with a young black cat in tow and explains that he is the grandson of Kuroboshi, who wishes to retire soon. Therefore the younger cat has decided to start training to replace Kuroboshi and take on a contract with Tamako. Kuroboshi asks that Rinne help to train his grandson, but only gives a vague response of not feeling comfortable in doing so himself when Rinne asks why it should fall to him. Rinne takes Kuroboshi III out into the neighborhood and they meet Sakura. The young cat tells her she looks like a beautiful princess and sweetly flatters her as Rinne points out a haunted house he wants the black cat to help him with. While no one else seems to sense any ghostly presence from the dilapidated house, Kuroboshi III pulls Sakura away as he shouts a warning that something is underground. Just then the spirit of a chainsaw wielding maniac burst forth. Rinne immediately realizes this is a "black bass" level ghost, explaining why all the other spirits had fled the area. Together Rokumon and Rinne trap the spirit, and Rinne thinks to himself how surprised he was that no one else was able to sense the creature's presence except Kuroboshi III. When he turns to check on the young cat, he finds him cowering behind Sakura. The cat later admits that is is frightened of ghosts despite being a black cat. Sakura points out that Kuroboshi III is able to sense ghosts in a similar way that someone who is afraid of dogs is always alert for if one is lurking nearby. Rinne decides to help him overcome his fear by tying him to a tree and using some ghost attracting incense, but the young black cat slips through his bonds and flees at the mere sight of the spirits. At one point it seems that his fear becomes so great he will fight the ghosts out of necessity, but instead he merely scratches up Rinne and Rokumon and runs away again. Rinne tells Kuroboshi III that he'll have to inform his grandfather of the situation, which prompts the little cat to offer Rinne a 1,000 yen bribe. Rinne nearly accepts when Kuroboshi and Tamako arrive and unleash a few small ghosts which frighten the young black cat and spoil his plan. Tamako admits to knowing about Kuroboshi III's fear of ghosts but still offers him the chance to come live with her.

Chapter 177: ゲレンデのサプライズ
Gerennde no supuraizu

(The Ski Slope Surprise)
After returning from winter break, Sakura wanders into a classroom and finds that is is freezing cold. Some of the students think the heating system must be broken, but Sakura notices a first year student, Yuki Niseko, with a snowman perched on her desk that is invisible to everyone else. Tsubasa and Renge try to accuse the girl of making trouble, but they quickly realize she is unaware of the snowman that is the source of the freezing temperatures. Rinne explains to Sakura that it is not a ghost, but a tsukumogami. A male classmate of Yuki's named Appi overhears Tsubasa yelling at her about the snowman and seems to realize something is amiss, muttering something about the snowman himself. Yuki explains that she and Appi were snowboarding together during their vacation and she later received a text message from him calling her to come out and meet him, but he never showed up. She was angered at being jilted, and even caught a cold from being outside. When Rinne and the others go to get Appi's side of the story, he explains that he did try to meet with Yuki, as he had planned to give her a necklace as a gift. He hid the gift inside a snowman, thinking that Yuki would find it hidden inside when she got his text and came out to meet him. Much to his frustration, she did not know she was supposed to check inside the snowman and never found the necklace. The mix-up was caused when Appi told Yuki to meet him in front of the red snowmobile, which is where he built the snowman. He did not realize that the snowmobile might be moved in the interim. When he tried to retrieve his pendant from the snowman he found that it was frozen solid and he was unable to reclaim the gift. Rinne then uses a spray to make the snowman that his haunting Yuki visible to both her and Appi. When Appi smashes the snowman to retrieve his gift, it reveals a stuffed teddy bear as well as a pocketbook. Two others boys, Zao and Naeba, run up and reveal that they had gotten those gifts for Yuki and hidden them in the snowman as well. It seemed that the will of all the young men to give their gifts to Yuki was imbued inside the snowman which desired to be near her. When all the boys try again to give Yuki their gifts she apologizes and reveals that while she was freezing in the cold next to the red snowmobile she met a handsome young man who worked at the slopes and fell for him instead.

Chapter 178: 地獄の金庫
Jigoku no kinko

(Hell's Treasury)
In the afterlife Rinne tries to redeem a ticket for "World Hell Fear Ticket" that he won in a lottery, but the gentleman in the store tells him the ticket is missing its tab and he cannot redeem it. The man tells Rinne that the place is notoriously lame and dull. As Rinne leaves a lockbox falls from the sky, knocking him to the ground. Inside Rinne can see a 10,000 yen bill, and Rokumon nearly returns the box to the afterlife as they mull over what to do with it. Finally Rinne attempts to break into it, but the box shows no sign of damage. Outside Masato watches as Rinne struggles with the box, laughing and pointing out that the box is made from the ice that holds Satan in the deepest pit of hell, Cocytus. Rinne overhears Masato carrying on outside his window, and decides to try to melt the box using hot spring water. Of course it has no effect. Masato offers Rinne a can of Hellfire Spray that will melt the ice lockbox, surprisingly telling him he'll even give it to Rinne for free. That too fails to melt the box, and so Masato offers Rinne a hammer and chisel from hell. Each device only destroys Rinne's little apartment more and more while the box remains intact. Renge comes over after hearing all the noise and sees the box, immediately recognizing it as a cheap trinket that she sold while working at World Hell Fear for the Damashigami Company. She tried to sell the ice lockbox to Masato, but when she told him the price he use a bomb to cause a distraction and stole it. Renge presents Rinne with the lockbox key, but as soon as he opens it a spring-loaded boxing glove slams Rinne in the face. Masato is thrilled that he managed to put one over on Rinne, but with the money from the box Rinne is able to fix up his damaged apartment and Masato winds up stuck in the ice of Cocytus.

It is a frozen lake in which sinners who committed fraud or were judged as traitors are trapped inside the ice. In Dante's Divine Comedy Satan is also trapped in the ice and the more he flaps his wings the colder and more firmly frozen in place he becomes. Satan is shown with three faces which is also connected to his description in the Divine Comedy in which each of his mouths has a famous betrayer, Judas, Cassius and Brutus.
