Chapter 219: よくさがせ
Yokusagase

(Search Well)
Rinne and Rokumon are short on funds now that Sankai High is out for their winter vacation and no students are requesting any exorcisms. Rinne has little choice but to go out and look for a way to make some extra cash during the holidays. Elsewhere, Sakura and her friends are walking around downtown when they start to discuss sightings of a strange floating face that suddenly appears when Rinne arrives at coats it with Sense Coating Spray which makes it visible to everyone. The face is a mish-mash of scrabled eyes, noses and eyebrows which looks like a "fukuwarai," a popular New Year's children's game. Rinne realizes this is his chance to make a little money, though Tsubasa immediately arrives and chides the shinigami for trying to profit from the misfortune of others. Rokumon drops Tsubasa through a spirit way hole in the ground and Rinne gets down to business. The fukuwarai face explains that it has been used for many years by neighborhood children but it's pieces have become missing over its lengthy service and it hopes to be put back together again. When Tsubasa and Sakura start to solve the fukuwarai face puzzle Rokumon secretly steals the face's mouth away to buy Rinne some time to win. Not wishing to be beaten, Tsubasa creatively assembles a face from the spare parts. Angered by the haphazard assembly the face throws the pieces off and its mouth starts trying to bite Rokumon, forcing him to return it. Next a group of three schoolboys return the missing eye and while the face is reassmebled, it hardly seems any happier.

Chapter 221: 嫌われました
Kirawaremashita

(Hated)
One sunny morning Tamako takes Kuroboshi III along to help her clean up her storage building. The little cat walks inside and immediately panics upon finding it filled with ghosts, which he is deathly afraid of. Kuroboshi III decides to seek out Rinne and Sakura's help to support him in apologizing for tearing up the storage building. When Kuroboshi III tries to plead his case to Tamako she turns her back on the black cat, ignoring his plea. She even gives sweets to Rinne, Sakura and Rokumon but refuses to give any to Kuroboshi III. A short time later it becomes clear that Tamako is not upset with Kuroboshi over leaving the building a mess, rather it was because he ran away. Tamako continues to clean up the storage building after giving Rinne a can of spirit repellant to smoke out the ghosts. Kuroboshi happily starts to clean now that the building is ghost-free, but even that does not seem to please Tamako and she tosses him in the trash bin along with the garbage he was carrying. When asked again why she is ignoring the little cat, Tamako admits she is not angry, but has not seen Kuroboshi III in five days which confuses everyone. Just then the elder Kuroboshi comes along and says he is worried about his grandson, as he has not seen him either. For some reason both Tamako and the elder Kuroboshi are unable to see the little cat. Thinking back the little cat recalls that his grandfather and Tamako sat down to eat sweets for Respect for the Aged Day, and when they were not looking he snuck one for himself. Reading the instructions, Rinne discovers that if you eat a red bun you can no longer be heard or seen by anyone that has eaten a white bun. Both Tamako and the elder Kuroboshi admit to having eaten white buns while the little cat snuck a red one. Kuroboshi III is relieved that Tamako is not mad at him, but she accidently steps on him when he tries to hug her as Sakura explains that the effects still have two more days before they wear off.

Notes:
  • The dessert dish that Tamako serves everyone (except Kuroboshi III) looks to be imagawayaki (今川焼き), a stuffed bread or pancake like item typically filled with sweet anko bean paste. The other possible candidate is dorayaki (どら焼き) which is a similar pancake stuffed with anko.
  • The decorative calligraphy behind in Tamako's home has the kanji 忘 (wasu/forget) on it.
  • When Tamako goes into the storage building to clean a haniwa, a ceramic soldier, is inside.
  • The box that elder Kuroboshi found in the storage room says "respect for the elderly" (敬老/keiro). Respect for the Elderly Day (敬老の日/keiro no hi) is the third Monday of September. The food in the box is manju (饅頭) a flour, kudzu, rice powder and buckwheat exterior with a beanpaste interior.

Chapter 222: 新聞が届く
Shinbun ga todoku

(Newspaper Delivery)
One January day Rinne receives a note in the weather hutch that says strange newspapers are being delivered to a student's home. Rinne meets with the student, Hayato Mizuka, who shows him the papers in question. Hayato explains that while he he sleeping the papers are thrown against his face, seemingly out of nowhere. Rinne points out that all the papers are dated January 19th, and asks if that particular date had any meaning to Hayato, but the boy says it does not. Early the next morning while Hayato is still asleep, Rinne appears wearing his haori and watches quietly to see what happens. He hear's a strange sound and suddenly the newspaper appears and strikes Hayato. Rinne tosses a paintball to make the spirit become visible, but it only strikes the ghost's feet, revealing old feet wearing geta sandals. The feet swiftly escape, leaving Rinne behind easily. At school that day Rinne, Sakura and Tsubasa read through the piles of newspapers that have been delivered. Rinne states that he did not feel an evil presence when the ghost arrived and assumes there must be some sort of message or warning that the spirit is trying to give Hayato. Suddenly the feet return and Rinne is able to throw his haori around the ghost, making it visible. It turns out the ghost is an elderly man that Hayato recognizes as his great-grandfather. Hayato tells his great-grandfather that he just attended the old man's funeral, explaining that the died at the age of 96 and had a peaceful death. Rinne asks the old man what all of this newspaper tossing is all about, but the old man simply rambles in gibberish. Apparently the old man's Kyushu accent is so strong that he is almost impossible to understand. Sakura suggests showing the old man some of the newspapers to see if that reveals anything about why he has appeared, but when they go to seek them out they find that Renge and Rokumon have started burning them. Rinne says they'll have to wait for him to deliver more papers in the morning, but Hayato objects, saying he has had enough and wants this matter settled today. Rinne asks Hayato if he can remember anything that was particularly important to his grandfather, and the boy recalls that he enjoyed exchanging New Year's cards. The old man seems to agree, that this has something to do with his spirit lingering on earth. They go to this home and find hidden in a drawer the last New Year's card the old man made before his death and it is addressed to Hayato. Everyone is happy thinking they've solved the case until great-grandfather suddenly picks up a baseball and throws it at Hayato, implying a "dropped ball" or that Hayato is missing something. They finally realize he's been trying to explain "year" and "ball" who's kanji combine to mean "New Year's Gift". It seems great-grandfather had gotten Hayato a lottery ticket who's numbers were correct and he wanted to make sure his great-grandson collected the money after the winning numbers were announced in the January 19th edition of the paper.

She flees to Rinne's home where she finds Tsubasa and Rinne sitting along with Ayame Sasaki, the bespectacled girl who has a crush on Tsubasa. Ayame has the oni's mask with her, explaining that it came from her family's shrine. In preparation for Setsubun, Ayame was cleaning the mask when some spirit escaped from it. Suddenly the girl in the mask appears and quickly reveals herself to be Ayame's spiritual grudge once again acting out. Tsubasa only makes matters worse by flirting with Sakura which spurs the spirit to continue her bad behavior. Finally Rinne steps in and tries to use his Soul Separation Fluid to remove the mask from Ayame's bitter spirit. Rokumon steps in, trapping the spirit in his giant cat mouth and spits out the mask. Ayame sadly admits that she knows Tsubasa does not have feelings for her, but Tsubasa pops up and offers to buy her lunch. Of course he treats for Sakura and Rinne too since they helped out, which only upsets poor Ayame even more.

Chapter 224: 秘湯の宿
Hitou no yado

(The Secret Hot Spring Inn)
Tamako sends Rinne and Sakura to investigate an inn where she promises they will be well received by the ghostly proprietors. With the promise of a good meal and some alone time with Sakura Rinne jumps at the chance, unfortunately Tsubasa, Ageha and Matsugo all shows up as well and wreck Rinne's plans. Soon everyone meets the owners, a ghostly man and daughter who still run the inn despite having died. It seems they are plagued by monkeys who have tried to move into the inn. The owner explains that he retired from the corporate world in Tokyo to open this remote inn with his daughter but the monkey's kept attacking his customers and ruining his business. Now the father and daughter cannot pass on until they see a smile from their customers and know that they've done a good job. Ageha volunteers to rid the area of monkeys by using an explosive that will knock out any creatures within a five kilometer radius. Unfortunately Ageha fires it off just as Tsubasa tries to explain that will include all of them as well. Matsugo then suggests putting up mystical seals to keep the monkeys out, and as they try to corral them out of the area of the inn and adjoining hot springs, Ageha throws bombs at them, destroying one of the springs. Next Matsugo uses a single use spirit path to send the monkeys away, but it sucks up all the hot water in the hot spring they've settled in. It seems Rinne and his friends are doing more damage to the inn without ridding the area of the monkey problem.

Chapter 225: 楽しめ!
Tanoshime!

(Enjoy!)
At the remote inn, Rinne explains that the monkeys will no longer be a problem thanks to the barrier he and the others erected using the paper seals. The innkeeper is overjoyed and it is time for everyone to retire to their rooms. Of course Ageha and Matsugo argue over who should get to sleep in Rinne's room, but the room is filthy. When Ageha demands to know when it was last cleaned, the ghostly owners explain that just that morning they had tidied up. Rinne explains to them that time stopped on the day that they died, and so it has most likely been years since it was last touched. The bathroom is in also in a sorry state and overgrown with mushrooms. The group decides to play a game while their dinner is being made in an attempt to have some fun and hopefully help the ghostly owners pass on. The shinigami are not familiar with human games like Pop-Up Pirate. Tsubasa tries to show them how it works, but the game immediately falls apart due to its age. Next they try play Twister. Ageha and Matsugo immediately get excited about the idea of twisting and bending against Rinne. Unfortunately when they unfold the mat it tears into pieces because of years of disuse. Dinner is no better when they realize they are being served the mushrooms that have been growing in the bathtub. Finally it is revealed that the innkeeper's daughter had been feeding the monkeys when she was alive, hoping that they would drive her father back to Tokyo because she did not like living in the countryside. The owner explains that he tried to make nabe using the mushrooms he found, which accidently poisoned his daughter and him. Realizing that they are dead, a chill passes over the inn and snow begins to drive down until the ceiling collapses under its weight. As the beams crash down, it opens a new hot spring beneath the inn. Relieved to be out of the cold, Rinne and the others smile happily, which finally allows the ghostly owners to pass on. Back home, Tamako asks Rinne if he brought her a souvenir, and they present her with a jar of jam that expired fifteen years ago.

Chapter 226: 縁側のエサ
Engawa no esa

(Porch Bait)
One afternoon Rinne carefully divides a snack in half for himself and Rokumon, but he is shocked when Rokumon passes, saying he does not want anything to eat and that Rinne can have the whole thing. Upon hearing this Sakura decides to buy a meat bun for the little cat. Walking over to deliver the snack she watches a spirit path open and Rokumon plops out looking very well-fed and fat. After reporting back to Rinne he and Sakura follow Rokumon to an elderly lady's home where he steal food that has been put out for a ghost cat that lives at the home. Rokumon explains that he found the house ten days ago, but that the ghost cat never eats the food left out for it. Rinne attempts to commune with the cat spirit by using a Nekomata Plug, a device that is plugged into the cats behind so that it will transform into a twin-tailed Nekomata. The cat angrily hisses and claws at his face instead, but he manages to attach the plug, turning the cat spirit into a humanlike Nekomata. Still the cat refuses to explain why it is averse to eating the cat food and so Rinne investigates further. He finds that the old woman who owned Tora has a small shrine to the cat and even shows pictures to Rinne of her deceased pet. Rokumon apologizes to Tora, thinking that by eating her food he kept her from passing on, but she explains that she felt guilty about never letting the old woman pet her. Rinne offers to pet Tora but she scratches his face yet again. Tora's owner comes outside upon seeing her, and Rinne warns her not to try to pet the nekomata. Instead the old lady explains that she has is allergic to cats and therefore cannot pet Tora, but thanks her for being such a good pet. Tora thanks the old woman for caring for her for so long and is able to pass on upon hearing her owner's love for her. The case is solved, but unfortunately for Rinne that means that he has to go back to dividing his already measly meals with Rokumon.

Chapter 227: 振込はまだか!
Furikomi wa madaka!

(Where's My Bank Deposit?!)
During the course of their work Shinigami often incur expenses for all of the various exorcism related tools they have to use, and by providing a receipt to the shirushigami at the Life Count Administration Bureau they can receive some remuneration for their expenses. This month Rinne submits his receipts for 1,200 yen worth of tools but Kain seems skeptical regarding the receipts. Rinne explains that his living situation is becoming difficult and he needs to be repaid as soon as possible, but Kain says he will not be paid until next month as scheduled. A month later Rinne returns, furious that he still hasn't gotten paid. He finds the bureau is inundated with other angry shinigami who are also waiting on their money as well. The shutters are pulled down over each teller window in the office when suddenly something from inside starts to smash through them. Suddenly the ghostly spirit of a goat smashes through calmly eating the receipts the shinigami have turned in for their reimbursements. Kain seems indifferent, saying that they can resubmit their receipts and be paid at the end of the following month, but of course that is far too long a wait for many of the poorer shinigami like Rinne. The goat spirit makes short work of many of the shinigami, proving to be an agile leaper and ramming his way through swaths of reapers easily. Rinne tries to outsmart the goat by drawing a lady-goat on a substitution balloon to distract him, but the goat tries to embrace the fake and it immediately pops. This outrages the goat who angrily starts devouring more receipts, so Rinne uses a tsukumogami seal to animate one of the filing cabinets to fight back against the goat but it is unable to stand against the goat's powerful kicks. Rokumon leaps through a portal with a rental scythe made especially for dealing with goat spirits that has a set of ram horns on the end. Using it Rinne head butts the goat and defeats him, saving the office from further destruction. Among the debris Rinne finds his expense reports uneaten and demands that Kain promptly pay him. Kain says he will make it a priority and include a reward for dealing with the goat. Rinne thinks he has finally come out ahead but another month passes and he still has no payment, when he visits Kain, the stingy bureaucrat tells him that the damage to the office had to come out of his reward so he's lucky to break even.

Chapter 228: 春の悪霊捕獲
Haru no akuryou hokaku

(Springtime Evil Spirit Capturing)
Rinne hunts down Raito and Refuto, asking if they've managed to repair his shinigami scythe. Both Raito and Refuto are wearing sick-masks and present Rinne with his scythe with what appears to be a Christmas wreath attached to it, explaining that it's an extra bonus. Rokumon comments on the strangeness of the wreath they attached, but Rinne says he has no time to test the new feature, explaining that it's Evil Spirit Awareness Month and the reward money for sending spirits away increases by one percent, which Rinne wants to take advantage of. Rinne spots an evil spirit harassing Sakura with a knife and quickly jumps into action, swinging his scythe at the spirit, but when he does the wreath releases spores an the spirit starts violently sneezing. Refuto pops up and explains that the cedar wreath releases pollen that neutralizes the spirits. Rinne is irritated that left added this feature without his permission, but when Rokumon points out that Rinne just made an extra five yen thanks to bringing down this spirit he's more willing to accept the power of the wreath. Raito tries to recommend Rinne buy a hay fever mask to protect himself from the wreath but he quickly runs away, planning to capture as many spirits he can to gain the miniscule bonus reward. Renge is also trying to make some reward money as well when Rinne sweeps in to steal her target from her before she can act. As they fight over who's target the ghost was, Rinne's scythe spills more and more pollen until they are both in tears. Refuto tries to sell Rinne the mask, but he wants 5,000 yen for it, which is far beyond Rinne's paltry budget. Tsubasa comes out and angrily throws his sacred ashes at Rinne for spreading the pollen around, though Raito and Refuto explain that it should have no effect on humans. Tsubasa says that he has regular human hay fever, prompting Rinne to say he has no right to complain then. Suddenly the ghost that Rinne and Renge were fighting over appears and thanks Tsubasa for helping her move on to the next life. It seems that his sacred ashes were what allowed her to pass, much to everyone's surprise. During Evil Spirit Month even humans who banish ghosts are given a reward for their work, and Renge and Rinne are very irritated that Tsubasa managed to swipe their fee out from under them. Frustrated, Rinne tries to rip the wreath off of his scythe only to have it explode in his face. Raito tries to sell him some medicine to help him overcome his hay fever, but Rinne refuses and runs away to take on another spirit. A cloud of pollen explodes and Rinne gives in, paying a discounted fee for Raito's hay fever medicine. Sadly it starts to rain immediately, blotting out all the pollen and making the medicine needless. Later Rinne forces Refuto to remove the wreath but he is unable to find anymore spirits during the Spirit Awareness Month. At school, Tsubasa brags that he really did get the money for sending away the ghost while Renge happily says she actually made a tidy sum this year. Rinne can only put his head down on his desk in frustration.
