Chapter 269: 猛犬捕獲補習
Mouken hokaku hoshuu

(The Vicious Dog Capture Supplementary Lesson)
In the afterlife Ageha is called back to school and made to take supplementary lessons on how to catch wild dog spirits due to having previously been absent when the class discussed it. The spirits of vicious dogs tend to frighten other ghosts that are trying to reach the next world and pass on, so shinigami must be trained in dealing with these wild animals in case they interfere with one of their exorcisms. Upon finding the rampaging dog that she was looking for Ageha tosses the leash and collar at it but instead it bonks the dog on the head and infuriates it. The dog ghost begins to chase her and she frightens it away with her bombs only to find that another dog has attached itself to her collar and leash. This dog drags her headfirst into a electrical pole, knocking her unconscious and running away only to be found wandering with his leash dragging behind by Sakura who immediately picks it up and tries to help this other ghost dog. Shockingly this new dog has a human's head with a strange, rock-star type appearance. The dog leaps and flies and tells Sakura that he's in a big hurry though he does not seem to know where he needs to go. Meanwhile Rinne finds Ageha who also cannot remember what she was supposed to do after getting knocked out. She takes Rinne to a fast food restaurant where he can barely contain himself at the sight of all the delicious food that is much too expensive for him to ever get to enjoy. Just as he is about to take a bite Sakura and the human-faced dog arrive with Tsubasa in tow and gobble down the meal Ageha bought for him. When Rinne remove's the dog's collar the ghost animal immediately transforms into a man. It seems the spirit picked up the dog collar after misplacing his own choker when he was running late for an audition and as a side effect was turned into a dog spirit.

Notes:
  • St. Bara Kanmuri (聖・薔薇冠/Sei Bara Kanmuri) translates as "St. Rose Crown". Tsubasa later says the school is "BaKa" for short (ばか/baka means "idiot").
  • A dog with a human face (人面犬/jinmenken) is a recurring supernatural creature in Japanese folklore and urban legends. According to the manga dogs with human faces have existed since the Edo period but became particularly popular in 1989. Popular Yokai Watch character Manjimutt is an example of such a creature (his name is simply "jinmenken" in Japanese).
  • The restaurant that Ageha takes Rinne to is unnamed in the anime, but called "Koko's" in the manga. It is likely supposed to be "Denny's" which is quite popular in Japan despite becoming more scarce in America where the restaurant originated.

Chapter 270: 雪の階段
Yuki no kaidan

(Snowy Stairs)
Rinne and Sakura are helping a first-year classmate named Dan Takashina. Each night since its began to snow someone has rung the doorbell at his house but when he answers all he finds are footprints leading to his doorway with no one in sight. Rinne and Sakura begin their investigation and almost immediately the doorbell rings, but rather than a ghost it is Tsubasa who hurried over upon finding out that Rinne and Sakura were going to be alone together. Too help pass the time Takashina offers to order sushi which Rinne can hardly believe. When the doorbell rings Rinne cheerfully dashes over to answer it, thrilled to have such a luxurious meal only to see a ghost awaiting him. He immediately slams the door deciding he'd rather wait peacefully for his food than deal with any ghostly problems. Tsubasa rushes over and tries to exorcise the apparition until Rinne uses a paintball to make it visible. He reveal the ghost to be a deceased pizza delivery man who is searching for the Sakagami residence, the previous owners before Takashina moved in. It seems the pizza's were ordered for their housewarming party only for the delivery man to take a bad fall down the snow-covered stairs when he attempted to make the delivery. Now each time it snows his spirit repeats the same events, bringing the pizzas to the house only to find that the nameplate has changed as other family have moved in over the years. Rinne tells Takashina to pay for the pizza's to be rid of the ghost but the boy is hesitant to pay for cold food and doubly angry when he is given the bill- 12,000 yen. Even between all of them they are unable to come up with the needed money until Rokumon fetches an illusory paper lantern that creates the illusion there is four times as much money to pay the delivery man ghost with. The ghost is satisfied but their money and the pizza's vanish as soon as the passes on leaving them with nothing to pay the angry sushi delivery man when he arrives.

Chapter 271: NAGARA
NAGARA

(NAGARA)
Refuto and Raito show up at Rinne's apartment to try and sell him on their latest scythe but he angrily tells them to leave and explains he has no money for their products. Raito suggests that Rinne take a part-time job working with them. He'll play a cool shinigami responsible for using their new scythe to exorcise a demon (Refuto wearing a silly costume they found in a dump in the afterlife) and be able to make a little money in the process. Thus, Rinne decides to work with them helping to sell Nagara, their one handed scythe. Rinne demonstrates it by wearing a three-piece suit and chatting on an expensive smart phone while easily dispatching demons with his free hand, never even having to interrupt his phone call to deal with exorcisms. There seems to be very little interest from the afterlife community in the Nagara and as Rinne discusses it with Raito, Refuto starts chasing children around in the demon costume. As Rinne and Raito watch, Refuto seems to be getting more out of control and actually starts wrecking the shopping center. Rinne decides to put a stop to his rampage and confronts him with a Nagara only to be smashed in the head by their fake smartphone as Refuto (who is standing with his sister) tells him he has to demonstrate the scythe using only one hand. It seems Refuto is not in the demon costume at all. It seems inside the costume is a real evil spirit (that also looks just like the costume it's wearing) worth 10,000 yen. Rinne decides to cash in on the reward but when he tries to use his real scythe Raito handcuffs a heavy suitcase to his arm to try and force him to use their one-handed Nagara scythe. Of course when he does the scythe proves to be a flimsy failure and Rinne ultimately defeats the spirit by smashing it over the head with the briefcase attached to his arm. Instead of collecting the reward however, Refuto and Raito are told they have caused 10,000 yen in damages and immediately tell the policeman that Rinne is the one in charge and he will pay for everything.

Chapter 272: 仏間で謝れ
Butsuma de ayamare

(Apologize at the Family Altar)
Sabato makes a pilgrimage to pray at his father's mackerel-shaped grave and discovers a shiny golden can of mackerel placed there as a tribute to his late father. Elsewhere, at Tamako's house, Rinne and Sakura pay a visit and quickly realize that Sabato has broken into his mother's house in search of something. Upon finding him, his face is covered in unusual black markings which Tamako immediately recognizes as mackerel patterning. She attacks her son, calling him a grave-robber. As Sabato leaps away the golden can drops from his kimono and Tamako explains that the grave sprays paint on anyone that would try to steal the golden can. Sabato explains that he found an inscription on the bottom of the can that says he should apologize in the family altar in order to rid himself of the markings on his face. Tamako seems hesitant to allow Sabato to pray at the shrine in her house and soon it becomes obvious why, the room with the shrine is piled up with junk and the altar is buried in the far corner. While Rinne and Sabato climb through he piles of junk Sabato discovers a bank book that Rinne quickly snatches from him. The book indicates a forgotten account holds 500,340 yen and Rinne quickly starts to look for his family's seal in order to withdraw the money for himself. Just as Rinne finds it Kuroboshi III flies into the room in a panic, knocking the seal away and into Sabato's hands. Just as Sabato is planning to escape with it the spirit of a giant mackerel (his father) appears and sprays him in the face with a jet of water. The blast reveals the buried altar and Sabato is freed from the curse-marks, though the bank book remains lost to Rinne in all the clutter.

  • The opening scene is of a cemetery. You can learn more about Japanese cemeteries and their appearance through various works of Rumiko Takahahsi via our video on the subject.
  • This week Rumiko Takahashi did the cover for Shonen Sunday S 2015 Vol. 4 which was released on February 25th. Within the issue is a newsprint circular promoting the anime of Kyokai no RINNE, products from the series, an interview with the voice actors and a very special four panel gag strip drawn by Rumiko Takahashi which has not been reprinted or collected anywhere else.
  • Sabato's father has a mackerel as his tombstone. Sabato (鯖人) is written with the kanji for "mackerel" and "man". This is because his father, a human, died and was eventually reincarnated as a mackerel.
  • The large, decorative calligraphy at Tamako's home says 鯖 (mackerel).
  • The onomatopoeia べたべた (betabeta) appears when Tamako describes the footsteps of a theif in her home. Betabeta is the "sound" of something clinging everywhere or something stamped everywhere.
  • "I remember she hates cleaning." - Sakura is refering to chapter 175.
  • "We need the name stamp to withdraw the money!" - The stamp is an 印鑑 (inkan). A stamp used for bank withdrawals in particular is called a "ginko-in" (銀行印). In Japan these are used much like a signature would be in western countries.
  • The decorative calligraphy behind Tamako has the kanji 忘 (wasu/forget) on it.

Chapter 273: 散財の呪い
Sanzai no noroi

(The Curse of the Splurge)
Rinne is invited to a doughnut shop that is having a problem with strange, grimy marks being left in odd circular patterns all over their store. They say the problem started ten days prior and regardless of how often they clean the marks continue to return. It has caused customers to stop coming and when Rinne inquires if he recalls anything else out of the ordinary the employee tells him it seemed to begin when a pretty young girl with long hair started coming to the store. Suddenly in walks Annette who the donut shop employee says is the very same girl he was just talking about. Annette has brought Sakura and Tsubasa with her to discuss a problem she's having, it seems she's been wasting money lately buying donuts and stuffing her face. As Tsubasa and Sakura peer into Annette's crystal ball and see her visits to this very same doughnut shop Rinne notices serpentine eyes lurking behind his teacher. Sacred ashes from Tsubasa reveal a massive snake spirit that seems to be haunting Annette. Sakura asks her if she did something to earn a grudge against a snake and when Annette says no, her crystal ball shows her buying a pocketbook at an antique store. Tsubasa examines it but it seems the pocketbook is not made of snake skin. The day she bought the pocketbook she visited this very store and realized that tucked inside was a small card-carrier made of salmon skin. Angered by being ripped off, Annette tossed it in the garbage at the store. The serpent is associated with Benzaiten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of fortune and by throwing away the card carrier Annette brought about her own misfortune with money. Rinne manages to find the little item stuck behind the flap of the garbage can and attaches a tsukumogami seal to it in order to bring it to life. As soon as Annette apologizes to it it forgives her, but tells her it will rest for one-hundred years before it decides to bless her with good fortune again.

Chapter 274: 灰と憧れ
Hai to akogare

(The Ash and the Longing)
The story opens with the retelling of the myth of King Midas who wished that everything he touched would turn to gold. Despite getting his wish, his food and drink all turned to gold as well, making his blessing quickly turn into a curse. At the weather hutch Rinne receives a gift and wonders who could have sent him such a generous item. Rokumon examines the card as Rinne runs off and realizes that the gift is a trap. Rinne arrives in class wearing his new gift- a school uniform so that he can finally trade in his track suit. When he arrives Sakura is telling her friends that her mother made some cookies she was hoping to share with Rinne. When everyone sees him in his new uniform they are shocked at how much "poor Rokudo" has changed. Sadly Rinne realizes he has been tricked when he takes Sakura's cookie and it turns to ash in his hands. Rokumon arrives and shows Rinne the letter that came with the uniform. It is filled with misspellings and simplistic writing making it clear who gave him this gift- Masato. The devil comes to gloat over Rinne and both Tsubasa and Annette get their licks in on him before Rinne kicks him out the window. Rinne says that he is faced with the ultimate choice, wear the uniform he loves or starve to death which Sakura and Tsubasa can hardly believe is even a choice. Masato send him more and more food to tempt him and Rinne thinks that having Sakura feed him herself may allow him to get around the curse. Unfortunately he is doubly disappointed when Rika feeds him instead and the food turns to ash in his mouth. Ultimately Rinne decides he'll have to return the uniform to Masato so that he can eat all the food that was delivered to his desk. When he does and shakes the devil's hand a bolt of lightning strikes them both ruining the food in the process. When Rinne is about to attack Masato again he is offered another uniform that will turn anything he touches into gold. Rinne rejects the uniform but feels blessed that Rokumon was able to save one of the pizzas from the lightning bolt though Tsubasa remarks it is already cold.

Chapter 276: チャージしてください
Chaaji shite kudasai

(Please Charge It)
Matsugo stops by Rinne's apartment and finds it empty. On a table he finds a "scapegoat doll" a very expensive tool that Rinne had been chosen to test out. The doll will assume the appearance of anyone who's hair and fingernails are placed inside of it and Matsugo immediately decides to make a Rinne doll that he can pal around with in ways the real Rinne would never allow. An hour later while walking through the neighborhood with a ten thousand yen fee he has just collected Tsubasa encounters Rinne who has a strange laser-equipped eye. He uses the laser on Tsubasa's bill and repeatedly says "please charge it". A short time later Sakura comes across a wounded Tsubasa who has seemingly been attacked by Rinne who stole his money and ran away. Meanwhile Rinne returns home and finds Matsugo unconscious in his room. He and Rokumon quickly realize that Matsugo made the doll look like Rinne and now it is running wild out in the world. Rokumon suggests that because the doll is a prototype given to them for free that it is perhaps bugged when Matsugo explains that it attacked him, but Matsugo reads the directions and explains that the old dolls would revert to their original form after three hours while the new dolls will seek out energy in order to remain permanently disguised. Elsewhere the Rinne-doll comes across Miho and Rika and once again asks them to "charge it" before using its laser to find more money in Miho's purse. He snatches it and feeds it into a slot on his chest. Matsugo arrives and hurries away with the Rinne-doll to make Sakura jealous after she witnesses Rinne's apparent money theft. When the real Rinne arrives everyone accuses him of finally growing desperate enough to steal from them, but they soon see the fake Rinne with Matsugo who realizes that feeding the doll money will keep its battery charged. Rinne dispatches the fake and demands that Matsugo use the money he had intended to give the doll to pay back Tsubasa and Miho.

Chapter 277: 努力の結果
Doryoku no kekka

(The Result of Great Effort)
Walking to school one morning Sakura sees the disembodied hand of a ghost suddenly appear and drop a banana peel in the road causing Miho to take a nasty fall; as Sakura checks on her a pail of water drops from the sky nearly hitting her as well. At school Sakura tells Rinne of the strange occurances she tells him she expects someone is holding a grudge against her. At school the same hand appers holding a marker but Tsubasa quickly tosses his sacred ashes causing the spirit to flee, but not before it writes "change seats" on Sakura's desk. Rinne immediately goes outside and speaks to a tree, asking the ghost to show itself. Suddenly the ghost of a young school girl emerges. She does not seem to remember Rinne despite his reminder that they met three days prior. The girl yells that she'll have none of Rinne's tricks as Tsubasa and Sakura soon join the scene. Sakura immediately notices the school girl is wearing loose socks, a fashion trend from the 1990s which suggests she has been deceased for quite some time. The ghostly girl begins to tell them that three days ago she was just starting high school when Rinne approached her and asked her if she would like to talk to him in an effort to help her pass on. She immediately assumed he was trying to flirt with her and shoved him away while laughing hysterically deciding that she would play hard to get. Days later she saw Rinne with Sakura and became wildly jealous. Realizing that he will have to take her on a date to help her move on Rinne begins to worry about the cost of amusement parks and movies before the girl tells him she simply wants to hold hands as they walk around school. Sadly this simple desire is ruined when the girl realizes that no one can see her walking hand in hand with Rinne and so she begins to once again insult Sakura by scribbling on her desk. Rinne starts to suspect that there is more to the ghost's lingering attachment than she is letting on. Sakura follows along and tells the spirit that she noticed her letter-perfect handwriting on the desk and suggests that she was actually an honor student despite her floozy appearance. It seems that her real desire was for everyone to see how pretty she was and how much she had changed after graduating junior high school but she never got the chance as she was hit by a truck on the way to school. Using his spirit tools Rinne makes the ghost visible so everyone can see her, but then plugs his projection lantern into her head to broadcast what she used to look like, mortifying the ghost at how plain she was though most of the modern day students say she looked better without her loose socks and bleached hair.
