(The Goddess of Wisdom)
Tsubasa thinks he's being clever by asking Sakura to come to his house to study and have some sweets, but Rinne shows up as well after Sakura invites him to come along without Tsubasa knowing. Tsubasa cleverly convinces Rinne to dine on an exquisite meal alone in the kitchen before Sakura's arrival. Unfortunately, Sakura arrives but much to Tsubasa's frustration she has Rika and Miho in tow. While studying a shipment for Tsubasa's absent father arrives, a jar of labeled "Minerva" which Rika promptly opens, unleashing a spirit trapped inside. The two girls dash off to photograph the spirit which destroys Rinne's private meal. Everyone starts to chase the escaped spirit through Tsubasa's home, encountering traps the creature leaves for them. Miho and Rika, surprisingly, are interested in pursuing the spirit believing it must be the goddess of wisdom, Minerva. As the spirit tangles itself in the clothes of Tsubasa's mother Rika and Miho seem more sure of the goddess' presence but a paintball from Rinne and a letter enclosed in the package sent home reveal the truth of it- Minerva is the spirit of a deceased pet monkey from a wealthy home, her spirit lingered and continued to wreck havoc and the house and needed a good exorcising.

Chapter 290: 愛の鐘
Ai no kane

(The Bell of Love)
Installed in a tower overlooking the sea is the Bell of Love, a huge bell that, legend says, will united a couple forever when they ring the bell together. Dozens of couples have lined up at the base of the tower to go and ring the bell but an accident occurred. A man fell down the stairs at the base of the bell tower and died, now his spirit lingers at the site and causes trouble for any couples that attempt to ring the bell. They feel the hand of a spirit grasp theirs to prevent them from ringing the bell. Rinne, Sakura, Tsubasa and Ageha all arrive to investigate the bell, though Ageha hopes to ring the bell with Rinne while Tsubasa hopes to do the same with Sakura. Arriving at the bell, they all spy the lonely-looking spirit dourly ringing the bell on his own. Rinne, Ageha and Tsubasa all press the ghost to tell them why he so sad, but after enough pestering he shoves them off with an incredibly powerful push which sends them flying. Sakura notices that the ghost has a set of tick marks on his arm as if he were trying to keep count of something but when she asks him about it he says it has something to do with a promise to a girl he once knew. Soon it becomes clear that the ghost had hoped to meet a girl and propose. Because so much time has passed however, the girl is long gone from the spot she had promised to meet the deceased boy at. Rinne is able to trick the spirit by placing Memory Sheets over the ends of his binoculars, which tricks him into believing that the girl is waiting at the appointed place. He remembers that she had asked if he wanted to break up to ring the bell one time and if he wanted to stay with her to ring it 108 times. By the time he had rung the bell the 50th time other patrons became angry and he took his fall down the stairs. Rinne helps him pass on by encouraging him to finish ringing the bell while the others peer through the binoculars and see that the girl had left with another boy.

Chapter 291: ショートカット
Shooto katto

(Short Cut)
Rokumon delievers a letter from Rinne requesting help with an afterlife problem that has filtered into a resort in the world of the living. Meanwhile Tsubasa has been called upon to help exorcise the ghosts that have begun to haunt the resort. When he arrives he finds Sakura, Miho and Rika all swimming in the spa's pool. Sakura notices some shinigami floating around the spa hunting for something and Sakura soon sees eel ghosts swimming about in the swimming pool. Tsubasa tells the girls that he's there looking for ghosts and after they follow him the soon come across Rinne who is disguised as a blood-covered doctor with Rokumon wearing a skull mask. Rika and Miho flee upon seeing Rinne's bloody costume and soon Ageha appears dressed as a dead bride. It seems Rinne and Ageha are trying to distract the resort patrons so that the other shinigami can search the pool area for the eel spirits. Kain arrives and explains the problem- Japanese people eat tons of eel during the summer and consequently the Sanzu River in the afterlife becomes clogged with their ghosts as they pass into the afterlife. In order to combat this the shinigami developed a Short Cut Spirit Road that would allow the eel ghosts to bypass the river and pass from one side to the other by passing through the spirit way. Unfortunately the short cuts were put on backwards and allowed the eels to flow back into the realm of the living. Tsubasa realizes this is a shinigami issue and decides to give up on the exorcism and take Sakura on a date instead. Soon more and more eel spirit start to arrive and an exit portal is set up in the pool to ship the eel spirits back to the other side of the Sanzu River in the afterlife. Floating on a little inflatable boat, Sakura, Tsubasa, Rinne and Ageha are all pulled through and nearly dumped onto the Wheel of Reincarnation as they are carried along with all of the eel ghosts. The group narrowly avoids getting reincarnated themselves.

Chapter 292: おさげむかつく
Osage mukatsuku

(Pigtails Are Disgusting)
Rinne is dispatched to the seashore to investigate a ghost who has been haunting a local inn. The innkeeper tells Rinne that the ghost slips from room to room as if she is looking for someone recalling that the ghost often pulls girl's hair for some reason. At the beach Sakura, Tsubasa and Ageha are also visiting. Sakura notices a little girl building a sand castle near the water's edge when sudden a hand appear from the water and attempts to grab the little girl's braid. Sakura shouts a warning, drawing the ghostly hands to her pigtails and pulling her underwater. Rinne rushes out to chase the ghost away, saving Sakura from being drowned. Retreating back to the inn to discuss what happened, Sakura tells everyone that when she was dragged underwater the ghost asked who she was. As they wonder about what all of this means the ghostly girl slowly emerges from a decorative shell on the table of the inn room. Sakura inquires about who the ghost mistook her for and the ghost immediately panics and flees dropping a cellphone as she runs away. Examining the phone Rinne finds a photo of a girl with twin braids embracing a young man. Ageha quickly rushes to follow her telling Rinne that this requires the soft touch of a fellow female to handle properly. Ageha catches up with the ghost and convinces her to tell her story. The boy in the photograph is Kaito, the son of the innkeeper. The ghostly girl tells Ageha that a classmate had sent her the photo of the boy and girl caught in an embrace, and yet the only thing she could recognize about the girl were her pigtails. Now the ghost lingers at Kaito's home, the inn, to see if she can find the girl in the photo. Rinne asks the ghost what she will do when she finds the girl she is looking for and Ageha seems to egg her on to go through with it as some sort of closure. As the problem seems it will be a slow one to solve, Sakura decides to undo her braids to keep the ghost from continually trying to blame her for her problems.

Chapter 293: シミュレーション
Shimyureeshon

(Simulation)
Sakura is still in danger of being attacked by the ghost girl that blames her for stealing her crush due to the fact that she knows it was a pigtailed girl who she saw a picture of hugging him. In order to keep Sakura safe Rinne gives her a set of "hair-tie barriers" which she wears at the end of her braids and place a barrier around her should the ghost try to grab her hair again. It does not take long for the ties to be put to the test as the ghost soon appears and snags Sakura's braids and gets jolted for her trouble. The shock seems to trigger some sort of memory and the ghost explains that she actually followed the boy to where the photograph was taken to see if he was cheating on her. She expresses a great fear of the place and Rinne and the others travel to the temple where the photograph was taken. The ghost girl seems nervous to be back. Using a tsukumogami seal to bring the coin collection box to life, everyone is shocked when it starts screaming in fear when it sees Sakura's pigtails. Rinne begs Ageha to rent some memory glasses to place on the coin box so that his recollection of the day can be projected for everyone to see. They watch as an image of Kaito arrives and then suddenly a pig-tailed girl dashes out from the temple covering her face and runs into Kaito's arms. Kaito shouts and tells the girl that she surprised him when suddenly the then-living ghost girl appeared and tugged on the mystery girl's hair. Shockingly her hair was a wig which flies off and the girl sees her face and dashes away screaming. It turns out the "girl" was one of Kaito's friends wearing a scary mask which sent the girl running away, she fled down the temple stairs, slipped and died. They arrive where the girl died and are surprised to see an older Kaito and his friends arriving to lay flowers at the site of the girl's death. When the ghost realizes that it was Kaito's male friend that was dressed as the girl she was so jealous of she is finally able to let go of her anger and pass on into the next world.

    Koori no naka no kanojo

    (The Girl in the Ice)
Sakura and her friends visit a neighborhood festival late in the summer and plan to enjoy some shaved ice when she notices a ghostly presence emanating from the block of ice. Elsewhere Rinne is counseling a spirit who died five to six years ago. The ghost shows Rinne a black and white photo of a beautiful girl and explains that he cannot pass on until he can help to save her. Back at the festival the girls try the shaved ice and find it is impossibly cold, too cold to even eat. Sakura surmises that the ghostly aura surrounding the ice must have something to do with this. Rinne arrives at the festival with his ghostly client in search of the block of ice when Tsubasa appears and tries to forcibly exorcise the spirit using his sacred ashes. Rinne explains to everyone that the ghost wishes to rescue his beloved who is trapped in the ice. Upon hearing this everyone panics thinking they have eaten ice that has a dead body trapped inside. Upon inspection however there is nothing in the clear ice block at all. The ghost relates that the girl in the photograph was someone he obsessed over but she found him lacking. As he finishes his tale he leaps into the back of the ice vendor's truck, locking himself in with the block of ice. Rinne and Tsubasa follow him in where he continues his story away from Sakura, explaining that he had glimpsed the girl in the nude. The ghost continues, speaking of an ice cave that stayed frozen outside of his town even in the summer. He explains that he would steal away there and carved an image of the beautiful girl in the nude from the ice in the cavern. After his death he settled there and sadly watched as the ice grew back over his sculpture, encasing her and leaving him to wish that one day he might free his ice sculpture once again. Rinne fetches tools for the ghost to work his magic on the ice block in the vendor's truck while Tsubasa ensures the girls cannot view the masterpiece and allow the ghost to work freely. Unfortunately the ghosts skill is not what everyone imagined and the resulting ice sculpture is a crude, cartoonish farce.

    Notes:
    • New editor-in-chief Takenori Ichihara made an announcement in the magazine that sweeping changes would be made in an effort to combat the low sales of Shonen Sunday. The magazine's sales fell below 600,000 in July of 2011, and then below 400,000 in the first quarter of 2015. Ichihara says that he will will make the decisions on manga content based on his own preferences and aesthetic, and that some series would be removed to make way for new authors, as he sees the magazines future sucess hinging on a combination of young and exerpienced talent. Ultimately, he would remain in control of Shonen Sunday for six years, until October 2021. His time would see artists like Shinobu Ohtaka and Hiroyuki Nishimora leave the magazine, while launching hit titles from new artists like Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle (魔王城でおやすみ), Komi Can't Communicate (古見さんは、コミュ症です。), Frieren (葬送のフリーレン) and multiple spinoffs of Detective Conan (名探偵), while luring away artists from Shonen Jump like Norihiro Yagi, who's series Ariadne in the Blue Sky (蒼穹のアリアドネ) appeared in the magazine, as well as the return of Koji Kumeta from Shonen Magazine. You can read an interview with Ichihara after his retirement where he reflects on the emergency changes he brought to the magazine after his retirement.
    • Ichihara's message stated,

      Dear Reader,

Thank you for always supporting Shonen Sunday. After 7 years, I have returned to my hometown of Weekly Shonen Sunday. I would like to use this page to convey the greetings and the general policy of Shonen Sunday to the readers.

From now on, Weekly Shonen Sunday will make it an absolute priority to nurture new creators who have risen up through the ranks. Any member of the editorial staff who violates this policy will be asked to leave the Shonen Sunday editorial department without mercy. A "new creator" is an outrageous hero who believes in his own talent, takes his one shot in life, and tries to challenge the vast ocean, where there is no correct answer for what manga should be, and does it all with their bare hands. The manga editor who should be the escort runner is also required to have a tremendous responsibility and resolution. I don't need any editors in Team Sunday who I've decided can't handle the job. And I believe that all the members of the new Shonen Sunday editorial staff who gathered around me for the big team reorganization in July this year are members who have that determination.

On the other hand, my ideal Shonen Sunday isn't created by new creators alone. The power of mid-level and veteran authors who have strongly supported the history of Shonen Sunday is also absolutely necessary. I firmly believe that the perfect balance between tradition and innovation is the driving force behind the appealing “miscellaneous” part of magazines.

From this autumn, major reforms will begin for both the Shonen Sunday main magazine and the Sunday Super special issue. Many serialized works have left the magazine, and instead, talented new and young authors will liven up the magazine one after another. In the next six months, we will further speed up the reforms. Readers, please be a witness to the rebuilding of Shonen Sunday.

As the center of this reform, I, the editor-in-chief of Shonen Sunday, will be making all the decisions related to "manga," from the primary selection for newcomer awards and debut read-throughs for rookie authors to new serialization projects for veteran creators. My own judgment, prejudice, and aesthetic sense are all that I have. Naturally, this is also an expression of my determination to bear the responsibility for the future fate of Shonen Sunday alone.

"I've been a genuine Sunday kid since I was a boy." I have never been a Jump kid or a Magazine kid. Weekly Shonen Sunday has supported me so much during my elementary school, middle school, and high school days. Now is the time for me to give back to Shonen Sunday with all my life as a manga editor. At the same time, it is also a way to give back to the many great manga artists who have built the history of Shonen Sunday and to all the readers who have loved Shonen Sunday throughout the ages. I would appreciate it if you could look forward to my repayment from now on as a "Sunday kid companion".

    Chapter 295: 先生と風船
    Sensei to fuusen

    (The Teacher and the Balloon)
The new semester of school begins after summer vacation and it quickly becomes clear that something is amiss. Sakura arrives at school to see her teacher, Annette, using her crystal ball to tell a student's future, but soon realizes that no one notices that Annette is actually just a group of balloons strung together with a face drawn on it and garden gloves for hands. Sakura soon realizes that only the supernaturally inclined such as Renge and Tsubasa are able to tell that this is not their real teacher. Tsubasa immediately tries to pelt the balloon-Annette with his sacred ashes, but a barrier around it makes the strange creation impervious to his assault. He soon notices that the balloon-person is wearing some sort of magical ring on its gloved hand. At the weather hutch Rinne finds a threatening note that states he should not get involved if he wishes to keep Annette safe. Renge reveals that she also received a similar letter. Soon Sakura gets a call from Annette on her phone but the call ends suddenly when she hears her teacher scream on the other end of the line. Rinne goes to try and investigate the balloon-Annette who is teaching class but the barrier around her zaps him when he gets too close. Thankfully the thick gloves do not hold the magical ring very well and it simply slips off when Rinne chases the balloon-person into the hall. The balloon person explodes and its still intact arm picks up the ring and flees. Rinne and the others trail it back to Annette's house where it delivers the ring to their teacher. It seems all of this was done because Annette had gone to see her favorite band in Fukuoka and was too tired from making the return trip home. The scream on the phone when Sakura called her was because she realized she had overslept. Renge then demands payment for the balloons revealing that she was helping Annette all along. When Annette's mother and grandmother return home they punish her for stealing the shielding ring and the students leave, thoroughly embarrassed by the laziness of their teacher.

    Chapter 296: 背中を見せろ
    Senaka wo misero

    (Show Me Your Back)
Rinne receives a letter from members of the swim team telling him that their captain no longer comes to practice and they suspect something supernatural may be the reason. Rinne goes to investigate, finding member after memeber are darkly tanned thanks to all their time out in the sun. They explain that on a summer trip to the beach their captain fell asleep on the bus ride home and they heard a strange voice that sounded like it was coming from his back. Just as they are explaining this, Eita Seno, the swim team captain arrives poolside. Both Rinne and Sakura can sense something supernatural seems to be glowing from his back and the female swim captain, Masumi Mizawa, rips his shirt off to reveal the ghostly imprint of a girl's face as if she were laying upon Eita's back as he was tanning. The pale shade murmurs that it hurts and one of the swim team members says that is the voice they heard on the bus ride home. Because the spirit keeps saying how hot and painful it is to be stuck on his back the other students assume he murdered the girl and roasted her alive. Soon though ghostly hands reach out from Eita's back and when Rinne tries to pull the spirit free she slips away revealing that she is covered in suntan lotion and coconut oil. Finally using his ghost repellant smoke he is able to make her leap free from Eita's back revealing a surprisingly youthful ghost girl. The spirit immediately explains that she wanted to be a "gyaru/girl" a fashion that was popular in the 1990s and was primarily know for girls wearing incredibly dark tans and bleached blonde hair. The ghost explains that she struggled to tan and often simply turned red instead a the desired dark-brown that she was trying to achieve. She passed out in the sun on the beach and when she awoke she was dead. Years passed and Eita sat on the same spot where she died. Her spirit attached itself to his back hoping to get a nice tan but soon realized that he tanned on an almost daily basis. The sun was still too much for the spirit girl and she was in constant pain from her fair skin being subjected to the harsh rays that Eita so loved. To make matters worse when Eita saw the pale face on his back in the mirror he stepped up his tanning, visiting tanning bed and further burning the ghost girl. Despite how cute the girl looks with her pale skin she still wants to have a dark tan and is unable to pass on until she achieves it. Rinne uses one of his spirit paint balls to make the girl appear so everyone can see her, revealing that she has a very dark tan. Once all the boys say how cute she is she is able to pass on. Rinne whispers to Sakura that he made fiddled with the color ball to make her appear 20% darker so she would think she finally achieved the tan she had always dreamed of.

    Chapter 297: メヂューサの仮面
    Medyuusa no kamen

    (Medusa Mask)
While out shopping one day Masato comes across a rare find- the Medusa Mask, a device that can be used to turn anything viewed through it into stone. Sabato quickly steps in and sells him the mask for a measly 5,000 yen. Masato immediately rushes off to make trouble for Rinne and turns his pudding into stone. Rinne smashes the dessert over his head and then when Masato attempts to turn the shinigami to stone as well nothing happens. Rinne boots him back into the afterlife where Sabato points out that the battery in the mask has died. Of course Sabato charges Masato another 2,000 yen for the battery charger and it is only then that the demon starts to suspect that he has seen Sabato somewhere before. Back in the world of the living Rinne reads up on the Medusa Mask, learning that it was a shinigami product that was never released due to the short battery life, however the item was stolen and there is a 500,000 yen reward out for it, a sum Rinne can hardly imagine. Masato returns to try to use the mask on Rinne who is able to elude his gaze using mirror (which turns to stone) and a splash of water which Masato promptly headbutts through. Once again the battery dies after only two uses leaving Rinne with an opening to steal the mask away. Just when it seems like Masato will lose his mask Sabato tosses a fishing line that pulls him back into the afterlife to keep him away from Rinne.

    Chapter 298: 石になれ!
    Ishi ni nare!

    (Turn to Stone!)
Masato struggles to master the Medusa Mask due to its very small battery life, but Sabato knows a sucker when he finds one and continues to extort money from the simple-minded demon as he peddles accessories for the mask that are meant to make it more useful. Masato attacks Rinne again this time armed with a 50,000 yen extension cord to ensure his mask remains plugged in. Rinne also begins investing money that he does not have to purchase tools to win the mask from Masato. When the demon attacks again Rinne uses flash bombs to blind him but Masato shields his eyes with a welder's mask. As the two battle Rinne realizes that the mask is plugged in and quickly yanks the cord from the wall once again causing the battery to drain from the mask. Sabato steps in and sells Masato a 300,000 yen backpack generator to keep the Medusa Mask fully charged. Masato tries to steal the mask for himself and then seems to take the high road to protect his son from the mask's gaze only to offer to sell Masato a power adaptor for the generator at a ridiculously inflated price. As if that were not enough he offers Rinne an Oroboros Mirror of protection for 500,000 yen which Rinne promptly tosses at his father's head. Rinne finally gets the upper hand by tossing a table at Masato who turns it to stone just as it smashes against him knocking him unconscious. As he retrieve the mask and celebrates his impending windfall of a reward Rinne receives a bill from his grandmother that shows all of the accessories Masato had been charging. It turns out Masato had pickpocketed Tamako's credit card and made all of the purchases on it. When Masato gave the number to Sabato he made an illegal copy and used the card to buy televisions and computers running up a massive bill. By the time Rinne received his reward his father had stolen it away leaving Rinne with a net gain of zero.
