Chapter 319: こっくりさん
Kokkuri-san

(Kokkuri-san)
At Ichigo's elementary school some of the other children invite her to play Kokkuri-san, a game similar to Ouija where all the children touch a ten yen coin that their fingers subtly move around a piece of paper with handwritten letters on it to spell out messages from the great beyond. Much to Ichigo's shock, the unseen presence spells out "Otome, I am waiting." Clearly the spirit knows of her past life and has returned to haunt her in the living world. Otome rushes to Sankai High to tell Rinne and Sakura what has just happened and the pair head to her elementary school to investigate. When they arrive they see a bandage-wrapped ghost with an ax stuck in its head guiding the children's fingers to spell out the threatening message again and again. Before Rinne can do anything Tsubasa runs in and throws his sacred ashes everywhere, explaining that the teachers had called him in to investigate. Rokumon fetches a color-paintball for Ichigo that makes the ghost visible to everyone and the teachers and students flee in shock when they see the threatening looking ghost materialize before them. Rinne nearly exorcises the ghost but gets distracted with the ten yen coin from the Kokkuri-san game falls to the floor, which allows the ghost to escape. Finally as things calm down they ask the ghost how he knows that Ichigo is Otome and he begins to explain. First he removes the ax from his head, revealing it to be a prop. He explains that he was a cast member at a haunted house who died of heat stroke and found himself in the afterlife. When he arrived he slipped and fell into the Sanzu River and watched Otome rush past as she carried her high-school year book to throw into the river. She noticed him and promised she would come back to help fish him out and he said he would be waiting. Instead the gnu that would eventually carry Otome to the Wheel of Reincarnation stampeded past and drove him out further into the river where his bandages snagged on as passing boat that carried him back to the living side of the river. The ghost waited for her to be reincarnated and sought her out hoping she could send him back to the afterlife after all these years, but Ichigo explains that she is no longer a shinigami. Thankfully Rinne sends him back with a slice of his scythe and the ghost can finally pass on after all these years stuck in the living world. Ichigo tells Rinne that maybe she can help make him some money using the Kokkuri-san game at her elementary school but later reports to Sakura that the game was banned after what happened with the scary ghost showing up.

Notes:
  • Kokkuri-san (コックリさん) is a Japanese styled version of the European/American concept of "table-turning" which eventually evolved into Ouija, a method of using an object that moves around a board to spell messages supposedly from the afterlife. The Japanese tradition was introduced via an American sailor in the 1880s and rather than a ghostly presence the Japanese believe it is the spirit of a fox (きつね/kitsune) that communicates with them players of the game. Jiro Tsunoda's 1973 manga Ushiro no Hyakutaro (うしろの百太郎) also popularized the game.
  • As mentioned in chapter 317, Ichigo calls her yearbook a "YB". This is because she abbreviates it in Japanese as "sotsu aru" (卒アル) which stands for "sotsugyo arubamu" (卒業アルバム).

Chapter 320: 呪いの書
Noroi no sho

(The Curse of Calligraphy)
In the afterlife Anju watches as Matsugo wanders into the school library and hears an unusual sound. Soon she appears in the realm of the living and casually walks into Sakura and Rinne's class, invisible to their less spiritually sensitive classmates. After class Anju presents Rinne with an odd book as Sakura, Renge and Tsubasa all gather around to see what is going on. Upon opening the book Rinne finds an illustration of Matsugo trapped in a black void with a chain on his ankle. Anju lights some incense and suddenly Matsugo's leering head pops out of the book only for Rinne to slam it closed on him. Matsugo explains that he was in the school library on his lunch break when he saw an appealingly titled book, "How to Make Friends" and decided to pick it up. As soon as he did he was pulled into the book and trapped. The book is actually designed as a test at the elite school that Anju and Matsugo attend (and Renge was unable to get in to). Whomever can free Matsugo from the book will gain 100 points. Anju asks for Rinne's help freeing Matsugo, but Rinne declines, suspecting this is all some ruse so that Matsugo can be around him. Matsugo even offers to pay Rinne for his help which holds a bit more interest for the poverty-stricken Rinne. Ultimately Rinne decides to help but Matsugo gives Rinne an overly weird hug when Rinne tries to pull him free of the book, resulting in Rinne tearing him free of the cursed tome.

Chapter 322: 非凡な赤
Himon na aka

(Rare Red)
One late afternoon Sakura spots a shuttered pastry store who's front door seems vaguely distorted suggested a spirit road passes through the shop. Tsubasa soon arrives as well, telling Sakura that the real estate agent sent him to investigate some strange things at the location that began after the death of the pastry chef who owned the store. Elsewhere Oboro tells Rinne that Ageha has not been heard from since she was dispatched to investigate the same site. Once everyone meets up they find Ageha passed out inside the darkened store with blood leaking from her mouth. Rinne is relieved to see her start to stir when Oboro goes to check on her, leading Tsubasa to wonder if shinigami can even die. Before long the ghost of the pastry chef appears as well and offers sumptuous looking dessert tarts to everyone. Sakura stares intently at the pastries as a tear rolls down her cheek, though she is unsure of why she is crying. Rinne immediately bites into one of the free snacks and passes out while Ageha explains that the same thing happened to her- the blood on her face revealing itself to actually be jam from the dessert. It seems the pastry chef had hoped to start a new trend of spicy, pepper-infused desserts which was a terrible idea. Rinne decides that he can use the ghost's lingering attachment to his advantage, explaining that the ghostly chef will not pass on until he sees people trying his tarts and that ghosts will be lured into the establishment with the promise of free food if they can successfully eat everything on the menu. The desserts are so offensively bad that the ghosts immediately pass on into the afterlife rather than linger and be forced to eat more and the chef happily watches as his food is devoured.

Chapter 323: 心霊フィルム
Shinrei firumu

(Slasher Film)
Miho, Rika and Sakura all walk home from school and pass an abandoned hospital which some students have been using as a set for a movie they are making in one of the school clubs. The president of the club, Mitsuru Samurai, recruits Rinne to have a look at the film they made in hopes he can explain some strange phenomena that showed up in the movie. Rinne agrees and Tsubasa and Sakura join him for a screening along with Nana Suzushiro and Dai Kondou, the two stars of the student film. As they watch the film Sakura thinks to herself that Nana mostly stares right at the camera and Rinne actually falls asleep while watching the dull display. Finally the action picks up when the scenes move to the abandoned hospital and as the two actors perform huge ghostly hands and eyes begin to appear around them which were unseen during the actual filming. After leaving the hospital though the phantom images continue to appear in other scenes as well. Using a computer from the afterlife Rinne is able to scrub the ghostly images from the film in order to save the movie that the students made, but he shows the images he remove to the director revealing that it was the personification of the club president's wraith that had manifested itself within the film. Mitsuru admits that he is in love with Nana and so he wrote the main role in the film so that he could play the role of her love interest except Dai got the part instead. Ultimately the film goes off the rails having never revealed the identity of the murderer that the entire first half of the movie set up and instead randomly ends with a wedding that Mitsuru had hoped to star in with Nana.

Chapter 324: 金霊
Kanedama

(Gold Ghost)
Sakura takes Rinne's reincarnated mother, Ichigo, to a local street food fair since both of her parents work full time and she is often left home alone. Ichigo had hopped that Rinne would be able to come but he was flat broke and could not afford to come. As the two girls sit enjoy the festival they both notice a strange sight- a huge anthropomorphic ryo, an old type of Japanese currency, walking around eating food. Other humans seem to interact with the huge coin with no concern as it eats food and reaching into its chest to pay for various treats. Ichigo tells Sakura not to stare at the ghost, explaining that he is the Kanedama, the gold ghost, that anonymously spreads good fortune around in the afterlife by patronizing shops and businesses. Soon Tsubasa arrives and spots the odd looking ghost eating at the festival and tosses his sacred ashes in the ghosts face. The Kanedama immediately leaps on him, squashing him under his huge body and then stealing his wallet before wandering off. Rinne arrives and watches the Kanedama with Sakura and Ichigo, explaining that anyone who recognizes the spirit for what it is and sees through its disguise will not be able to benefit from its generosity and will cause the ghost to flee. Rinne decides he will try to steal from the ghosts' hidden money cache when it is distracted and he makes a dash when the Kanedama is drinking from a bowl of soup, however Tsubasa springs back to life and tosses more ashes at the spirit which causes it to turn out of Rinne's reach. Ichigo steps in and tosses stickers over the ghosts eyes as Rinne tries to make another grab for more money. This time Rinne steps in and sells the Kanedama an overpriced snack to get a little money of her own. Feeling like he has no alternative Rinne flagrantly reaches into the Kanedama's chest and snatches out a bill as the ghost disintegrates and flies away. Rinne thinks he has struck the jackpot until he opens his hand and finds that he had simply grabbed a worthless receipt instead.

This is not a creature that is original to Rumiko Takahashi but is a historical yokai/spirit that is said to resemble a stream of golden coins flying through the sky. Early depictions date back to the 1800s. The kanedama has also been referenced in the works of mangaka Shigeru Mizuku best known for his work Gegege no Kitaro (ゲゲゲの鬼太郎).

Chapter 325: 賢者の石
Kenjya no ishi

(Philosopher's Stone)
Tsubasa tells Sakura, Rinne and Rokumon about a legendary European artifact, the Philosopher's Stone, which his father has just acquired at an auction. Soon Annette arrives, having taken it upon herself to act as Tsubasa's adviser in matters concerning the Philosopher's Stone. She decides a test should be made to see if the stone can transmute common items into gold. She sets a pot boiling on Tsubasa's stone and dumps in various herbs along with nails and other metal and places the stone inside the pot. As the pot heats up a voice can be heard from within and soon a spirit emerges that had become attached to the stone. Everyone is shocked that the European stone was home to a Japanese man who claims to have been an alchemist as well as a scientist with the Japanese Imperial Army. The ghost explains that the army had been doing a great deal of secret research into alchemy and he was tasked with trying to change dirt into iron due to wartime shortages. The man claims that he came across the stone on the black market in the days following the war. The alchemist worked for a decade and claims that he was finally able to create a golden concoction. Rinne and Annette both immediately confirm their belief in the ghost's story as they saw an image of Rinne surrounded by sparkling gold her crystal ball. Everyone begins to wonder why the alchemist was not able to pass on into the next world upon his death if he actually was able to satisfy his ambition to create gold and Rokumon suggests that perhaps he died before he could spend it all but the ghost denies this. The spirit struggles to remember what kept him lingering on the mortal plane when suddenly he begins to work and Rinne lends him his haori in hopes he will create another potful of gold as Annette's crystal ball has seemingly predicted. The alchemist sets to work, chopping vegetables and placing a second pot on the stove next to the one containing the junk metal and Philosopher's Stone. Soon a cloud of golden haze fills the room just like in Annette's vision but the color is coming not from transmuted gold but from the steam of the curry the dead alchemist had desired all along and decided to make in the second pot. Annette warns them not to be disappointed yet and points to the golden glow coming off of the nails in the second pot, but Tsubasa simply point's out is the dusty curry powder that gives them their golden sheen.

    • The hippopotamus' name is Mr. Kabakichi (カバ吉). "Kaba" (カバ) means hippo.
    • Mr. Kabakichi has a shimenawa (標縄) and shide (紙垂) wrapped around him. Shimenawa means, "enclosing ropes". They are made to ward off evil spirits. Hanging from the shimenawa are zig-zag pieces of paper called "shide". They are often hung from shimenawa or are attached to the wands of Shinto priests for purification ceremonies. The guardian spirit also has a shimenawa and shide around his neck.
    • Ichigo's name means "strawberry" hence the image of the strawberry on her shirt.
    • Kurosu calls Shoma "bocchama" (ぼっちゃま) which means "little sir" or "little master". It is the way a servant would refer to their master's very young child as opposed to "wakasama" (若様) or "wakadanna" (若旦那).

    Chapter 327: 会えない二人
    Aenai futari

(The Two Who Did Not Meet)
While walking through the park Sakura and her friends come across a monument with a ghost waiting beneath it. The ghost seems forlorn and Miho comments that the monument has recently been moved from another location in the center of the city when the land was redeveloped. Sakura reports the ghost to Rinne the next time she sees him at school and the shinigami promises to investigate after class, though he has another ghost appointment that he must settle before he can meet Sakura to deal with the one she discovered. Tsubasa overhears their conversation and promises to quickly exorcise the ghost so that he can take Sakura out afterwards for karaoke and a movie before Rinne has a chance to deal with the lingering ghost. After school Tsubasa and Sakura go to the monument in the park to speak with the lonely ghost who is wondering where the girl he was supposed to meet could be. As usual Tsubasa impatiently tries to deal with the ghost with his sacred ashes while Rinne goes to a local convenience store and is shown security footage of a ghostly girl entering and wandering around. Rinne approaches and finds her looking for lipstick and when he asks if he can help her she takes off running. Rinne follows her only to see her ghost get hit by a passing truck and decides he needs to help her pass on into the next realm despite the fact that his is trying to get to Sakura before Tsubasa can exorcise his ghost. Rinne tries to help her retrace her steps but she constantly panics, dashes out of the store and gets hit by the truck that passes which prevents her from making any progress. Rinne uses his "shortcut mats" to teleport her from one side of the street to the other, helping her pass the truck and finally make progress on her journey. When Rinne catches up to her again she tells him she wants to go home and change clothes in order to get ready for her date. Rinne becomes impatient, realizing she is wasting too much of his time and has Rokumon rent a "Utopia" a mirror to trick her into thinking her clothes were ideal for her date. Once Rinne takes her outside she panics as she is unable to find the monument that she is supposed to meet her boyfriend at. Finally Rinne realizes she must be looking for the ghost who is at the relocated monument in the park. Upon helping her get there both ghosts call out to one another and Rinne, Sakura and Tsubasa help reunite Kenichi and Naomi after many years apart.

    (Whistle and Detergent)
Rinne receives a parcel from his grandmother containing a whistle and a packet of detergent. The enclosed letter explains that the the detergent is to be used for Rinne's haori which typically must be laundered in the afterlife at a high cost to Rinne. While flying past Rinne's apartment Masato notices the haori hanging on the balcony to dry and decides to steal it. He manages to fly away only for Rinne to spot him and give a toot on the whistle that his grandmother included with the detergent and the haori starts trying to pull away from Masato and return to the sound of the whistle. Despite Rinne's blowing on the whistle Masato is able to cling to the haori until Rinne runs out of breath and manages to fly away, unsure of why the coat tried to return. Rinne reads the instructions and realizes that the once the coat is taken out of visual range it will no longer respond to the sound of the whistle. Soon Masato realizes the implications of stealing the haori, without it Rinne is no more than a normal human, unable to fly or pursue him. At least that is what he thinks until Rinne arrives flying on Rokumon's giant cat head and tries to steal his haori back. Rinne suffers countless indignities from Masato who follows him around town, dropping things on the shinigami's head until Rinne finally has to plead with Sakura for some money to buy tools to capture the demon. Once Rinne is able to get close to Masato he sprinkles the detergent on the demon's wings making them fly flutter towards Rinne whenever he blows his whistle.
