Chapter 379: 告白
Kokuhaku

(Confession)
While stopping by the Life Count Bureau, Rokumon overhears Kain in the hallway. Listening through a doorway, Rokumon listens as an older man approaches Kain that seems to be serving as a matchmaker. Rokumon listens in shock as the old man tells Kain that the party he represents is a wealthy woman. Rokumon immediately dashes off to tell Rinne who is working at the beach alongside Ageha, Sakura and Tsubasa. Rinne and the others are surprised to hear the news of Kain's marriage, noting that Renge has always loved Kain since her middle school days. At home Suzu complains to Kain that they are out of rice and cat food, highlighting how dire their financial situation is. Kain thinks back on his meeting with the matchmaker, saying he needed time to consider things before giving a final answer. He is planning on taking a business trip to the beach to visit with Renge before giving his answer. At the beach Renge is engaged in more illegal soul stealing but she hides her behavior when Kain arrives and asks if he can speak to her later that night. Renge can hardly believe Kain would want to see her privately, but soon learns about the proposal he received and becomes disheartened. When Kain arrives to speak to her on the beach at night he holds up a photo of the two of them together from their school days but Renge panics, thinking he is offering her an invitation to his wedding. With nothing to lose she nervously confesses that she is a demashigami.

  • This issue of Shonen Sunday features a look at the cover of Niigata idol group NGT48's DVD release featuring a new illustration of Lum from Urusei Yatsura drawn by Rumiko Takahashi.
  • Stealing toilet paper from work. - 75% of employees admit to stealing from the workplace at least once. The number one cited reason for stealing from ones workplace is not kleptomania but dissatisfaction. This makes sense as to why Rokumon decides to steal toilet paper after not getting his paycheck on time.
  • Kain is interacting with an older man at the Life Count Bureau. The older man's coat says "課長" (kacho/manager) on it.
  • Sakura's name means "cherry blossom". Consequently her bikini has cherries on it. Tsubasa is the same, his last name, "Jumonji" means "cross/crucifix" which appears on his bathing suit.
  • “It’s her same old gimmick.” Sakura says that Renge is using her old tricks yet again. We have seen Renge use food to steal souls in chapters such as chapter 138.
  • Sakura is drinking an icey/slushie. The kanji written on the cup is "ice" (氷).
  • Renge’s yukata has chrysanthemums on it like she wears in her hair.

Chapter 380: 運命逆転
Unmei gyakuten

(Reversal of Fortune)
Kain stammers at the revelation and then shows Renge the photo he brought- an image of the two of them at their middle school graduation. He says he had been meaning to give it to her for years. Renge is touched by the gesture but when Kain asks about what she just said regarding demashigami she quickly runs away, ashamed that she made such a confession after misreading what he was going to talk to her about. Rinne, Tsubasa, Sakura and Ageha all find Renge staring at the photo and ask her what happened and why she blurted out her confession. Renge tearfully tells them to shut up and leave her alone but Rinne feels sympathy for her. Rinne tells Renge he might be able to clean things up if Renge can help pay the needed cost for his plan. Purchasing a bunny costume Rinne plans to have Tsubasa impersonate a demashigami and then make it seem as if Renge has been working undercover to catch him. Beginning the plan, Ageha goes to fetch Kain, shouting that he can catch Renge in the act of stealing souls. Unfortunately Ageha is unable to read the map to where their performance is being staged and leads Kain all over the beach in search of the others. Because it takes so long Tsubasa eventually yanks off the bunny head in order to keep from passing out and runs into the ocean just as Kain arrives. Suddenly Renge sees a bunny and attacks it, though Tsubasa is no longer present. It seems Renge actually catches a demashigami that was wandering past and successfully executes Rinne's plan to mask her true allegiance. Kain thanks Renge and though he saw her stealing souls he lies and says he saw no reason to arrest her, a tacit admission that he cares for Renge too. He tells her sadly that as things stand he cannot see her again, but she is promises to herself that she will give her being a demashigami in order to get her life on a better path. At work Kain meets with the matchmaker once again who presents him with a photo of the wealthy girl he had picked out for him. Much to Kain's surprise the match was with Ageha.

This literally translates to "big success" but the phrase and sign are iconic for their use on the prank shows such as Ganso Candid Camera (元祖どっきりカメラ). Translating it as "you got punked" is very accurate as it captures the context of how the phrase is commonly used on Japanese entertainment shows.

Chapter 381: 魔女の夏休み
Majyo no natsu yasumi

(Witch's Summer Vacation)
At Sankai High a group of students approach Annette and ask if she is really planning on quitting her job as a teacher. She sadly confirms that indeed it seems as if she might leave. The reason for this is what she has seen in her crystal ball. When opening ceremonies for the next semester take place in February she is unable to see herself anywhere at the school. She is not sure why she would not be present. Sakura wonders if it is possible that Annette might simply be late for the ceremony. Later Rinne, Sakura, Tsubasa and Rokumon go to investigate a case of mysterious black-cloaked figures appearing in an isolated campground. Ten days later a strange creature began to appear. Soon, Sakura, Rinne and the others see the creature for themselves- it is a human-faced insect that buzzes around stealing food and bothering campers. Soon Annette appears, insisting the creature is some sort of fairy as she tries to capture it. The bug is elusive however and easily escapes her nets. Annette explains that the black clad figures that were reported in the area are a coven of witches and that she is trying to gain a promotion in their ranks. In order to do so she has to summon and capture a fairy and she shows everyone a crude drawing she made that vaguely makes the human-faced insect look like the fairy in her picture book. Annette is hesitant to explain how all this connects with her crystal ball showing she would not be at school for the opening ceremonies in a few months time. Instead she explains that the fairies are attracted to the food of the campers and she is trying to lure her "fairy" with similar bait. Sure enough the human-faced bug shows up and she manages to capture it, but Rinne snatches it away and takes it to the owner of the campground in hopes of getting a reward for it, however Annette chases after Rinne, freeing the bug before he can get his reward. Meanwhile Rokumon spills Annette's beer on her sketch of the "fairy" causing the image to streak and bleed.

Chapter 382: 先生の未来
Sensei no mirai

(Teacher's Future)
Rinne manages to lure the human-faced insect out once more but when it appears it has strange black tendrils hanging below it. While Rinne and Annette wonder about its changed appearance Rokumon arrives carrying Annette's beer-stained drawing. It seems the creature that they have been chasing really is the "fairy" Annette summoned. She simply did such a poor drawing that the image hardly looked like a proper fairy at all. Now with the drawing smudged and streaked the actual creature appears the same way. Soon the creature disappears and Annette has to draw more, sending them out into the world for her to capture. Rinne realizes that crows are starting to arrive in the area and Annette explains the crows are how the witches watch her. Suddenly the crows swoop down and snatch up the barbecue that Annette was creating as a lure to her "fairies". Rinne, in a fury, captures the crows in a net to try and get the food back and manages to snag quite a few of Annette's fairies in the process. Annette pays Rinne for his work, but then the witches coven appears and for a moment it seems they may realize Annette's trick. Thankfully they say she passed and everything seems alright. As Rinne and the others depart everything seems well in hand, when suddenly a single "fairy" flutters by and the witches tell Annette she'll have to catch it as well, a feat that takes her so long she still has not caught the little creature by the time of the school ceremony.

Chapter 383: マモンの呪い
Mamon no noroi

(The Curse of Mammon)
Rinne and Rokumon are cheering on their good luck that they recently recieved 1,000 yen, enough to go to the convenience store and treat themselves to some humble rice balls. Just as they are flying along Masato comes and tries to smash Rinne with a rock, only to be swatted away easily. After crashing to earth, Sakura finds Masato in a pile of garbage cans. Sakura wonders how he was so easily defeated but Masato scoffs, explaining it was because he had not eaten in three days as he came up with his newest plan to punish Rinne. Masato proudly tells Sakura that he attempted the "Curse of Mammon" on Rinne. Masato explains that Mammon is god of people who greedily seek more money. Using a "Mammon Card" all one has to do is write the victims name on the bank card, insert it into an ATM machine and watch it destroy all their savings. Rinne arrives, overhearing what Masato has done and says that contrary to his plan Rinne has actually been getting money from an ATM that he should not have. Masato is furious, explaining that his own savings have been destroyed and when he shows Rinne the Mammon Card the problem becomes obvious. Masato misspelled Rinne's name when wrote it on the cursed ATM card. Because of this misspelling, the curse was reversed on its user- Masato. Furious Masato pulls out a can that sprays fire, his Fire Spray of Hell. He explains he had to skip meals for 3 days just to afford the little can, but with it he hopes to burn up the 1,000 yen that Rinne stole from him thanks to the curse. Rinne scoffs, explaining that he already bought a rice ball with the 1,000 yen paper note so now all he has is metal coins that are safe from Masato's flames. Masato tries to use a magnet to get the few coins back from Rinne and fails miserably. Weak from hunger he passes out in the street and Rinne offers him some of his convenience store food only to pull it away from him at the last minute. Masato sobs tears of blood which drip onto the card which Rinne knows will break the Mammon Curse. Furious, Masato tries to make another Mammon Card with Rinne's name on it, this time spelling his name out in simple hiragana rather than the more complex kanji that he struggles with.

Chapter 384: 美しい家
Utsukushii ie

(Beautiful Home)
Rinne is brought in to investigate a strange problem they are having with a home they are trying to sell. It seems this 17 year old house has a strange phenomena occuring inside, no matter what kind of mess is made, a short time later the house will clean itself up with no one seeing how it happened. Rinne stands outside, surveying the house and noting that it seems almost brand new despite its age. Suddenly Ichigo, Rinne's mother, appears and excitedly seems to recognize the house. Sakura appears as well, having heard Rinne was investigating in the area. Ichigo explains that she wanted to live in this house before Rinne was born. It was when she and Sabato were living with Tamako who was in the world of the living due to the fact that she had married a human. Ichigo had started looking for a house and fell in love with this newly built home. Sabato and Ichigo had visited the house but it was too expensive for them to afford. Suddenly Sabato appears saying that when he and Ichigo visited it originally there was nothing unusual or supernatural about the home. They decide to test the house and having Rokumon walk on the floors with dirty feet. Immediately a broom appears and cleans up the messy paw prints. When Rinne throws a color paint ball at the broom it hits him and cleans up the paint splatter as well. Sakura soon notices that the house has no furniture in it except for a single picture hanging on the wall. Rokumon comments that he has heard a rumor that hotels sometimes glue amulets to the back of framed pictures in their hotel rooms. Checking the back they find nothing until the stare at the wall and see that Sabato and Ichigo had written their names on the wall when they visited years ago. Ichigo explains that both she and Sabato loved the house and had planned to purchase it. One night they broke in to look at it one last time before signing the contract and in their excitement wrote their names on the wall. The next day however Ichigo could not sign the contract because Sabato lost all their money gambling at the horse track. As she explains this they notice the spirit starting to take shape in the corner of the room- it is Ichigo as she looked in her past life as Otome. It seems her love for the house lingered in it and took care of it all these years. The spirit smashes Sabato a few times with her broom, but disappears when he apologizes to it, lifting the haunting on the home which promptly falls into disrepair.

Chapter 385: 最愛の人
Saiai no hito

(Beloved)
Tsubasa sits in the living room of a man who tells a story about his grandfather, explaining that he studied exorcisms in the west as an exchange student before returning to Japan. While abroad, he fell in love with a foreigner and during an exorcism something went wrong and the woman, who he had become engaged to, died. Crushed by her loss, the man's grandfather returned to Japan and married a woman he did not love, all while still harboring feelings for the western woman he lost. Now he believes his grandfather's restless soul is tied to some of his belongings that he keeps in a suitcase which he passes along to Tsubasa for exorcism. On the way home from this meeting Tsubasa encounters Sakura who says she has made some cookies and would like to share them with him. Tsubasa can hardly believe his good luck and when he places his tea set out at home Sakura suddenly flips the table on him much to his shock. Sensing something is wrong he turns to see Rinne, Rokumon, Sakura, Rika and Miho coming inside and he quickly realizes the Sakura that had offered him cookies is a fake. They explain that Tsubasa himself was the one that suddenly invited them to his home. Everyone is shocked that even Miho and Rika are able to see the ghostly apparition, but it seems this spirit is so powerful that even ordinary people are able to. Tsubasa wonders why the exorcist has taken Sakura's appearance as it continues to torture him, however it soon becomes clear. Because the ghost looks like Sakura, Tsubasa refuses to harm it in anyway. Rinne however is only too happy to make some money and offers to help Tsubasa deal with the spirit. Rinne begins to interrogate the exorcist's spirit, asking why it he is doing this to Tsubasa. When they bring up the woman he loved, he begins to explain. On the day of their wedding he had enough time for one final exorcism when he followed a spirit into a graveyard with his sword when suddenly it took the form of his beloved Diana, the foreign woman he was about to marry. Before he can explain what happens the ghost breaks off and shouts her name, revealing his true form and fleeing the house as Miho and Rika run away in fear as well. As the others pursue the fleeing spirit, Sakura wonders what happened and Tsubasa says he suspects that the exorcist accidentally attacked and killed Diana thinking she was the evil spirit. As Tsubasa ponders the story and tells Sakura it shows his own weakness, she reassures him that it does not. Tsubasa thinks he may have won out of Rinne by showing his vulnerability while Rinne merely offered to help in exchange for the reward. However as Tsubasa gloats Rinne nearly exorcises the exorcist only for him to once again assumes Sakura's form forcing Rinne to hold his attack as well.

Chapter 386: 何故だわからない
Nazeda wakaranai

(I Don't Know Why)
Rinne chases the exorcist's spirit through the skies as it flies away disguised as Sakura. He nearly slices it with his scythe when it turns and smiles at him, stunning him and making him briefly unable to exorcise it. Suddenly it reverts back to a huge, floating head and breathes fire on Rinne before escaping. Everyone regroups at Tsubasa's house to examine the contents of the suitcase Tsubasa was given that belonged to the exorcist in hopes it might provide some clue that can help them deal with his spirit. Inside they find the exorcist's journal and begin to read, though they find nothing useful. Next they find a photograph of the exorcist and Diana, his beloved. The spirit returns, howling out Diana's name as they examine the photograph and then immediately turns back into an immitation of Sakura for some reason. Rokumon suggests that there must be some significance to the ghost repeating this pattern, of wailing away for Diana and then turning into Sakura. As Rinne ponders the spirit's behavior the ghost asks Sakura if she would like for him to get rid of the others which shocks her. Sakura turns to ask Rinne why he did not exorcise the spirit when he had a chance and Rinne is shocked by this confrontational question. She tells him it is okay for him to exorcise the ghost though her blank, indifference expression is hard for Rinne to read. Suddenly she slaps him in the face and Rinne only then realizes that the spirit was trying to confuse him. Tsubasa decides to summon Diana's soul using the photograph of her they found hoping they will be able to get some answers that way. Suddenly the spirit changes from Sakura back to its true appearance and tries to embrace Diana's ghost only for her to shove him away. Tsubasa nervously tries to speak to the ghost in simple English, but she tells them she speaks Japanese much to their relief. They ask if she was hurt during the exorcism of the spirit that was impersonating her and she says "yes" but when they ask if he accidentally killed her the ghost emphatically says no. Diana agrees, saying he did not physically hurt her, but then when the ghost recounts how he exorcised the evil spirit, by slaping it across the face over and over and elbow dropping it she was offended he could so easily brutalize something that looked like her. Immediately after she saw that she called off the engagement much to the exorcist's shock. Sakura explains to the exorcist's spirit that he needs to learn to understand Diana's feelings about how he could so easily banish something that looked like her. Tsubasa readily agrees, saying that is why he could not exorcise the spirit when it took on Sakura's appearance. Rinne, sweating profusely, mumbles that he also could not, though he readily agreed to take Tsubasa's commission earlier. Sakura asks if the reason he impersonated her was to try and see if other exorcists like Tsubasa and Rinne would have done exactly what he did and he grudgingly admits that is the case. With the ex-exorcist now exorcised Tsubasa offers to pay Rinne for his work, but Rinne says "maybe next time" knowing that if he accepts the money he would seem as callous towards Sakura as the exorcist did towards Diana. In private however Rinne cries blood for a week at having to pass up the money he was owed.

Chapter 387: 仕事運急上昇
Shigoto un kyuujoushou

(Rapid Job Growth)
In the afterlife Ageha visits a fortuneteller who she hopes will give her romantic advice. Instead the fortune teller explains that her job opportunities are going to be on the upswing to which Ageha angry retorts that she does not care about her work. The fortuneteller shows her a spirit absorbtion seal that will help draw more opportunities her way and then promply sticks it to Ageha's scythe. The fortuneteller tells Ageha that a forest or park, somewhere green, will be her lucky spot. As she flies home daydreaming about Rinne, Suzu smashes into her with a cart stuffed with vegetable refuse and debris. Smashing it with her scythe, Ageha angrily tells off Suzu. A few days later Oboro visits Rinne to report some strange behavior from his mistress. He tells Rinne that Ageha has been working unusually hard and he cannot explain why. Oboro thinks Ageha might be cursed but Rinne largely is indifferent, asking if her working hard is really such a problem for Oboro. Later when Rinne goes on patrol for ghosts he runs into Ageha who sweeps in to exorcise the spirits before he can. After it happens over and over and Rinne's meager livelihood seems to be at risk he decides to go to Ageha's house and investigate for himself. Upon arriving Ageha asks Rinne if he'd like to go out on a date and Rinne angrily asks if she is trying to kill him by driving him out of business. Oboro arrives holding Ageha's scythe and points out the problem- it seems that the spirit absorbtion seal on Ageha's scythe has a small preying mantis ghost affixed to it as well from when Ageha smashed her scythe against Suzu's cart. The mantis spirit, with its natural reaping claws, has made Ageha all the more adapt at cutting through spirits when she finds them. Elsewhere Kain inspects Suzu's cart of greens and she shows him all of the mantis ghosts she has extracted from the pile, while he explains these are hardly worth much at all. Before Rinne can try to convince Ageha to remove the seal so he can get back to making some money she leaves for the living world to reap more ghosts. Following her with Oboro they pass unnoticed over Sakura and Rokumon who spy them flying through the sky. When Rinne catches up to Ageha he tells her how much he liked her before when she was lazy and never did much of anything. Ageha is overjoyed by Rinne's confession of love and much to Rinne's horror he turns to see Sakura staring at him having heard the entire thing.

Chapter 388: 鳳という死神
Ageha to iu shinigami

(The Shinigami Called Ageha)
Sakura stands in mild shock as Rinne seems to confess his feelings for Ageha, proudly lording his confession over her. Ageha immediately flies away, overjoyed in her apparent win over her rival and Rinne hurriedly tells Sakura he will explain everything later before chasing after Ageha. Rinne tries to disarm Ageha by attacking her scythe but she easily deflects his swing and sends his scythe spinning into the air before it falls back down and hits them both in the head. Falling, Rinne has to decide to either retrieve her powered-up scythe or to safe Ageha and decides reluctantly to save the latter. Ageha is of course overjoyed that Rinne would rescue her while Sakura and Rokumon watch from the ground, confused as to what is happening overhead. Sakura retrieves Ageha's scythe and can immediately tell it is possessed by the spirit of a mantis while Oboro calls out that he explained everything to Sakura. When Rinne lands, relieved that she understands, Oboro reveals that he explained that Rinne had confessed to Ageha which infuriates Rinne. Sakura however says that she understands Rinne is just playing with Ageha's "girlish heart" to get what he wants which hardly makes him feel any better. When Ageha flies off again Rinne has to rely on an expensive tool to try to stop her. Spritzing a can of spiritual spray into the air, dozens of ghosts arrive. Of course Ageha makes short work of them and Rinne collapses that his plan failed. However Ageha looks down at her hands and notices they are covered in blisters from all her hard work. Shocked that she has blemished herself she drops her scythe, allowing Rinne to remove the seal holding the mantis' spirit.
