Animage's Anime Grand Prix Most Popular Male Characters (1979-Present)

Translation by: Dylan Acres

Animage magazine has been published monthly since 1979 and publishes an annual ranking contest known as the "Anime Grand Prix." Readers vote for their favorite series, characters, voice actors, episodes and songs each year. In order to showcase the works of Rumiko Takahashi and accurately portray their popularity at the time of their original debut, we have included the top five characters for each year.

Please note that from 1979 to 1982 the characters were combined into one category and not segregated by sex, but starting in 1983 through 2021 they were divided into male and female categories. For the sake of completion we have included the top five charaters (regardless of sex) through 1982 here. For the complete female rankings, please see our article here.
