Aiya

Aiya is a spoiled princess and the daughter of Ogigayatsu Hiiragi Danjo, the deputy shogun of the Kanto region. As a member of a powerful family she is ill-mannered, spoiled and used to getting her way. She watches as the half-demon princesses liberate Towa from captivity and in the process run past her, splashing a splotch of mud onto her favorite kimono. Consequently Aiya decides she will stage an elaborate revenge in which she will pit Setsuna and Moroha against one another, with the promise of monetary reward and the status of having the demon slayers work for her father. It is soon learned, however, that Aiya has no plans to fulfill her end of the bargain and is simply interested in watching people fight for her own sense of entertainment and revenge.

Eventually Gin'u is hired as a tutor for Aiya but she entrusts Aiya's lessons to her younger brother, Hisui, who is told to visit the princess in disguise. Hisui is shocked to discover that Aiya has also kidnapped Setsuna to act as her replacement so that she can wander the countryside in search of thrilling diversions beyond the limited palatial life she has been forced into.

During her excursion, Aiya is captured by the octopus demon, Takonyudo, only to be saved by Hisui. Because of Hisui's bravery Aiya soon develops a crush on him, though he is largely oblivious to her feelings of affection.

The Meaning Behind the Name - 是露

Aiya (愛矢) is written with kanji meaning "love arrow". Additonally, Aiya is referred to as "princess" (姫/hime), however this should not be thought of in the same sense as the term is used in the West. In Japan, "princess" can be used to refer to any lady of high birth, not exclusively the daughter of an emperor or shogun. Those individuals would typically be referred to as "ojo" (王女), which is typically translated as "princess" as well leading to some confusion.
