The Inuyasha Narrative, Part 18: Inuyasha and the Present Day

Inuyasha Saw the Present as a Completely Different World to the Sengoku Era
Inuyasha sometimes traveled to the present day, and I think he viewed modern society as a completely different world with its own demons. He was constantly presented with things he’d never seen before, but if he was always surprised, always amazed, always wondering what things do, I’d never have been able to get along with the story.
To avoid this, I decided to have him just accept things as they were. I’m sure he thought the present day was crowded and noisy, but that’s all. Kagome’s family also accepted Inuyasha as he was, and again that was to keep the story moving.
Stories in the Present Day Provided a Little Breather After Tough Battles
Inuyasha’s travels to the present day provided a sort of breather for the story. The only demon that appeared in the present day was the flesh eating mask. It was pretty fun having a demon causing havoc in the present like that, but had I continued doing that, it would have made the explanations of how the Shikon shards were scattered and what happened to them much more complicated. I didn’t want to have to deal with that, so I never did it again.
Instead, I made the present day mostly a place for Inuyasha to take it easy and laze about. I usually had him visit after a long and heavy story arc, and that short episode would provide a little reset for the story. I started heading in that direction after the flesh eating mask, and it was set in stone after the story of Kikyo’s resurrection. It was then I grasped the story’s basic structure. From then on the main story would only unfold in the Sengoku era.
Well, okay, so there was one more in the present day, the story with the Soul Piper. But in that case, it had nothing to do with the Shikon shards. It was just tracking down a demon, and I think I did it to show off Kagome’s abilities. It was a problem only she could solve.
To Inuyasha, the Present is a Safe Haven for Kagome
He may make other excuses, but whenever Kagome is in danger he tries to send her back to the present, and that’s because he sees it as safe. He thinks that if she can just escape there, she’ll be okay.
