The Inuyasha Narrative, Part 20: Kanna, the Soulless
Translation provided by: Robby Stine of Kanabits

Inuyasha Wideban Extra Vol 20 Kanna was created to be the antithesis of Kagura.

The reason Kanna ended up the way she did is that being introduced after Kagura, I decided on having someone of the opposite nature. So on one side, you would have the extremely assertive Kagura, and on the other the silent Kanna. Kagura attacked head-on, while Kanna acted covertly, always sneaking around behind the scenes. In other words, Kagura was the dramatic one, while Kanna was the reserved one.

Why Kanna Obeyed Naraku

Kagura always rebelled, but Kanna was the polar opposite, acting alongside Naraku until the end. Kanna didn’t have a soul of her own, so she just did as she was told. That was another way in which she was the complete opposite of Kagura. Though I suppose most of Naraku’s aspects didn’t follow orders, perhaps because the capacity to obey all went to her. With this in mind, I made it so all aspects that came after her would betray Naraku.

Kagura was Special to Kanna

It’s debatable whether Kanna really had a personality or will of her own. She had the appearance of a young girl and was very faithful to Naraku, and because of these things, I think it would have been too grim if she did have much of a personality. But occasionally she showed signs of having just a sliver of one. She remained loyal until the very end. She never betrayed Naraku. She never even considered it. Perhaps this was because she lacked a soul, though I don’t believe that was necessarily the case. I think she felt something when Kagura died. Maybe not sadness, but a feeling of loss, that something was now missing. She really liked Kagura or at least thought of her as special.

The Unforgettable Kagura and Kanna

A lot of Naraku’s aspects came and went, but Kagura and Kanna truly were unforgettable. They were there early on and stuck around for a long time. It’s only natural to get attached to them.
