229: 望みと救い
Nozomi to sukui
(Hope and Salvation)
Mei immediately sees that her "treatment" of Sosuke using the Seed of Haku has terrible consequences and feels guilt that she is unable to offer him any help as his family begins to think he will become a monster like his uncle. Kamon however says it is not too late to treat Sosuke. Beniko, Kamon's shikigami, appears with a flower and with a simple gesture, the flower is able to remove the vines that are starting to sprout from Sosuke. Kamon tells the older man that he cannot offer him the same treatment, that the vines in his head have completely fused with him. Still, Sosuke's uncle asks that Kamon try to remove the vines, even if it costs him his life. He wants to try to regain his humanity rather than carry on living this way. Kamon attempts to remove the Seed of Haku from the man, but it causes his body to disintegrate and he passes away. Mei thanks Kamon for his help to Sosuke and Nanoka explains to her that Kamon has created an herbicide to counter the Seed of Haku. Mao tries to encourage Mei to accept Kamon's treatment to counter the Seed of Haku in her own body before it is too late, however Mei insists that Shiranui saved her, and she wishes to use her powers to help others as well. Mao tries to make her see that Shiranui's use of the Seed of Haku has ruined the Tazuru family, but Mei counters, suggesting that Shiranui warned them to contact him if anything was amiss. Instead of reaching out for help, they waited ten years and only sought aid when it was too late. Kamon again suggests to Mei that he can help her, but the sooner she asks for help, the better the results will be. She tells them she appreciates the offer but acknowledges that she has killed many wicked people and does not expect to have salvation for herself. Passing through a portal she returns to the human kodoku she has crafted and Renji arrives to collect his kakachu bugs. She silently realizes that the Seed of Haku she has been using is no healing elixir in the way she had assumed. She realizes that she had given Renji the Seed of Haku to reattach his arm when it was cut off and again thinks of Kamon's offer to remove the vines growing inside him.

230: 造顔師
Zouganshi
(Molder of Faces)
Mao, Nanoka and Otoya visit a young woman who has had a bad reaction to some salve she purchased to remove a mole on her face. Mao tests the salve and finds it is an earthen medicine after it sprays yellow sparks. Mao is able to heal the girl's face but her mole remains as it was much to her disappointment. As they leave, Nanoka confesses she can understand how the girl would be tricked into buying dangerous medicines and confesses she is overly sensitive about her eyebrows, but Mao interrupts her and tells her he likes them as they are. Elsewhere Renji is talking to some of his prostitute friends who tell him a young woman named Mineko has finally acquired a regular customer, however the man never sleeps with her, instead he seems content with stroking her face all night long and telling her he can make her more attractive. Mao runs into Hyakka who tells him that the body of a man with a crumbling face was found. It seems the man had stolen a large amount of money before he was caught and killed, his face ruined. Using his sparrows, Hyakka is able to use the sample of medicine Mao found to try and trace the person who has been giving out this earthen face molding ointment. Hyakka tries to leave the task to Mao, as he thinks of Byoki's words that they will all have to now battle until they kill each other, however Nanoka insists that Mao needs Hyakka's help and reassures him that nothing will change between them. Elsewhere Renji is called to see Mineko, her face changed into that of a flawless beauty, but some days later she dies, her face withering into a cracked, grotesque visage. The other women in the brothel tell Renji that Mineko's face started to chap and crack and that her visitor stopped coming after that. Renji decides to seek out the man who caused Mineko's death, the so-called Molder of Faces.

Chapter
231: 顔と薬
Kao to kusuri
(Face Ointment)
Renji asks the women at the brothel about the Molder of Faces, but they admit he always hid his face when he visited. Stepping outside he sees Hyakka's sparrows flying overhead and follows them. From a hidden vantage point, Renji watches Mao, Nanoka and Hyakka confront a man that the sparrows swarmed around. Immediately the man's face cracks and he falls down dead. Hyakka asks Mao if he recalls anything similar being used by the Goko Clan in the past, but Mao only recalls salves being made to remove wrinkles, an experiment he thinks that must have been a precursor to their quest to find immortality. The sparrows begin chirping again and in a nearby building a masked man is applying the ointment to one of his clients. The man refuses to allow more of the ointment to be used as his face is already cracked. He snatches the cover from the man's face as Mao and Nanoka rush in revealing that his visage is a single eye and crooked mouth with everything else smoothed away. Renji rushes in and uses his kakachu to swarm the Molder of Faces, but when they explode his face simply reconfigures itself much to everyone's surprise. The molder explains that he did not killed Mineko on purpose, he is merely trying to use up the jar of ointment in order to retrieve his own face which he states is at the bottom of the jar. The man explains he is hoping to find the Goko Clan to ask them about the salve as he heard they were the ones that once invented it. Just then the ointment in the jar begins to bubble.

232: 壺の中の顔
Tsubo no naka no kao
(The Face in the Jar)
The Molder of Faces explains that in the past he met a very beautiful woman selling cosmetics, that though she had a gorgeous, youthful face, he back was crooked and her hands wrinkled. She explained that she had gained the face ointment from a member of the Goko Clan, and when she turned to leave, the Molder of Faces attacked her with a knife, killing her and spilling the jar on the ground. A landslide knocked the man unconscious and when he awoke his face was missing. A mouth appeared on his face and told him that his face was now in the bottom of the ointment jar and to regain it he would have to use up all of the cream inside. The Molder of Faces explains that he has tried to pour out the ointment and get rid of it, but the jar always refills. Hyakka suggests that the ointment likely had a number of previous owners who all met grisly ends and thus the ointment became tainted by their malice. Renji tries again to kill the Molder of Faces with his kakachu, however his face simply returns to its smooth, featureless appearance. Soon the earthen ointment erupts from the jar, filling the room and filled with faces eyes, noses and mouths. Nanoka realizes that Hyakka's fire is harmonizing with the earthen ointment rather than counteracting it. Renji tries to strangle the Molder of Faces, but soon the earthen ointment starts to attack him. It is Nanoka's earth-influenced attacks that then drive then destroy the ointment and Mao realizes that in a battle against identical elements the more powerful wielder wins.

233: 強く
Tsuyoku
(Be Strong)
The cursed earthen medicine begins to slather itself over Renji's arm, threatening to absorb it unless Nanoka is able to exorcise the muck. Mao and Hyakka goad her on, but the Molder of Faces begs her not to destroy it because he would never be able to reclaim his lost face if she did. Nanoka thinks of Natsuno encouraging her as she realizes she needs to strike the jar that contained the ointment in order to purify its curse. With a single slash she breaks the jar and destroyed the cursed earthen medicine. In an instant the Molder of Face's has his own face return, before it erupts into a collection of eyes and mouths and then dries up and shatters leaving him dead. He had long ago merged with the cursed medicine and there was no way to help save him despite Nanoka's best efforts. Renji turns to leave, but Mao stops him after noticing the vine growing from his arm. Mao warns Renji that they can remove the Seed of Haku but Renji is indifferent and leaves, promising to avenge the arm Mao cut off that Mei had restored for him. Mao compliments Nanoka for successfully exorcising the cursed medicine on her own and she soon falls asleep as Mao carries her home with Hyakka at his side. Quietly, Mao hopes for Nanoka's continued improvement as he worries he will no be able to be with her as his battle against his colleagues from the Goko Clan will begin to become more pitched.

Madottekita yakusai
(The Return of the Terror)
Renji seeks out Mei and asks her to prune the fines from the Seed of Haku that have started to grow out of his arm. Sasuga watches as Mei works and comments that the wood element of seed was likely in conflict with the earth element of the cursed mud that Renji encountered. As Mei works, she thinks about how the seed will eventually kill Renji as the vines continue to grow inside of him. Soon Hyakka arrives and kills him, but before he can take the chest for safe keeping, Sasuga arrives and captures it. Ka to sui
(Fire and Water)

Kamon joins the battle, but Hakubi comments that only Hyakka's flames can trouble him. Soon Nanoka arrives as well and uses her blood to pop more of Sasuga's bubbles. She states that while Sasuga's water may defeat Hyakka's flames, he will be weak to her earthen powers. Sasuga hardly seems phased, commenting that she could not defeat him last time they faced off either. Kamon uses a tangle of roots to grab the box, but Hakubi slices through them with his saw blades. Dokusui
(Earth Vanquishes Water)
Sasuga ensnares Nanoka, Hyakka and Mao in columns of water to keep them from getting the Box of Monstrosity, however when Hakubi prepares to take it with his metal tendrils, clumps of earth begin to appear signaling the arrival of Daigo. When Hakubi asks him what his interest is in the Box of Monstrosity, Daigo confesses he was hoping Shiranui would be there instead. Sakuga attacks Daigo's golem, commenting that as an earth-user he seems more powerful than Nanoka, but he seems to make short work of Daigo's golem. Daigo hardly waits before pushing back Sasuga's water attack and knocking the boy out, showing just how powerful he really is. With Sasuga out of commission Daigo wraps the Box of Monstrosity in a ball of clay and Kamon adds his sutra to purify it. Wicked spirits pour from the seams in the clay until the box is crushed to pieces. His plan's thwarted, Hakubi collects the unconscious Sasuga and retreats while Daigo smiles and tells Mao he is happy to see him alive.

Chapter
237: 味方
Mikata
(Ally)
Daigo asks everyone what was in the Box of Monstrosity, leaving them stunned that he would help destroy the artifact without knowing what it was. Daigo explains that he has some knowledge of everyone through Natsuno's eyes and ears which have fed him information over the centuries. He tells Mao he would like to be his friend like they were so long ago, and explains that he harbors Natsuno's fondness for Nanoka. Daigo disappears in a swirl of earth and Kamon admits that he is suspicious of trusting Daigo, who he says he never knew very well in the distant past. Elswhere small balls of earth clatter against the windows of Yurako's home and Daigo appears to speak with her. Daigo explains that he has met Yurako twice before, but never while he was alive. The first time was when Shiranui killed him during the Heian period, he knows she was with Shiranui. The second was when his decapitated head was presented to her by Hakubi. Daigo explains that he knows Yurako tampered with Sana's incense which allowed her to witness her ayakashi being commanded to kill Masago. Having witnessed that, Sana was devastated and lost her innocence. Then it was Yurako who ripped Sana's heart from her chest after her death. Yurako prepares to attack Daigo with her ayakashi, but he kills them with a wave of his hand by driving shards of earth through all of them with ease. Daigo lunges at Yurako, squeezing her throat as he tells her how much she looks like Sana, but inside she is a terrible person. However, he adds, he likes that about her.

Urami to nozomi
(Resentment and Hope)
Daigo squeezes Yurako's throat, telling her how he knows she hated her twin sister Sana, how she was jealous that Mao loved Sana, and that she wanted nothing more than to see Daigo run away with her sister so that she could have her chance with Mao. However, Shiranui cut off Daigo's head before he could elope with Sana, which put an end to their planned escape. Daigo tells Yurako that he wants her to replace Sana and live at his side. He tells her Sana was too pure for the Goko Clan, but Yurako is suitably tainted. Yurako refuses, saying that she would rather die that live with Daigo. The earth-user begins to squeeze her throat before releasing her and telling her to think if over, though he assures her that Mao will cut her out of his life entirely when he discovers that she murdered Sana out of jealousy. Yurako realizes that Daigo wants to use her to take over the Goko Clan and she falls onto the couch, weeping for Mao to help her. Elsewhere Tenko tells Mao and Nanoka about a dead shark that washed ashore with an ancient bronze mirror in its belly. It seems whoever has possession of the bronze mirror soon is drowned in their sleep along with their entire family. Mao tells Nanoka that he has no memory of the Goko Clan having such an artifact, but Nanoka says she would like to investigate in order to gain more experience battling against water. Nanoka's earthen powers are supposed to be at an advantage against water, however in her battles against Sasuga she has not be able to hold her own. Nanoka thinks that with Daigo's superior earthen abilities, Mao will not need to rely on her as much, however he simply smiles and suggests they go investigate the mirror together. At Shiranui's home, he tells Masago's undead corpse that the mirror has at last appeared.
