Chapter 249: 双馬の殺意
Soma no satsui

(Soma's Murderous Intent)
Mao rushes to the dormitory where he finds Ayame exorcising the beastly girl who was possessed. She tells him that Nanoka was captured by a huge beast and explains that the curses are the work of her sister. Meanwhile, Soma reveals that the needle curses were cast to separate Nanoka from Mao, so that no one could interfere in their battle. He frankly tells her that he plans to kill her as his beast strikes. Nanoka summons clods of earth to hurl at the creature as she readies Akanemaru. Nanoka is stunned to see the beast healing itself quickly and Soma explains that after Natsuno nearly killed him by impaling him, the beast's metallic nature helped him to heal. Nanoka realizes that the more the beast is injured, the more similar Soma becomes to it. Soma coldly smiles and says that Hakubi told him that Natsuno is dead, and he smugly adds that it serves her right. Nanoka is stunned by this callous comment and attacks, only to be slammed to the ground by the beast. Soma tells her that it is her turn to die, but Nanoka opens her eye and it has become cat-like.

Chapter 250: 血と土
Chi to tsuchi

(Blood and Earth)
Soma preses his attack against Nanoka, knocking her to the ground. Nanoka realizes that if she carelessly loses too much blood in her attacks Soma will easily defeat her as she grows weaker, however she thinks back to the final words of Natsuno who told her the earth would always stand with her. Nanoka picks herself up, dodging Soma's attacks as she starts to channel more power from the earth beneath her feet. Using her blood, Nanoka converts the earth beneath the beast into mud, trapping the creature inside a muddy forcefield so that it and Soma cannot flee again. Soma's beast presses against the forcefield, its claws dissolving as it does so. This makes Soma's fingertips start to melt as well, and Nanoka warns him that he will take on the wounds of the beast. Soma seems indifferent, shouting that Nanoka is going to have to kill him and then she will be a murderer, just like he has become. Nanoka silently refuses to give in and promises to herself that she will exorcise the beast as many times as it takes but she will not kill Soma.

Chapter 251: 獣を祓う
Kemono o harau

(Exorcising the Beast)
Nanoka is determined to exorcise Soma's beast. While having it trapped within her earth and blood barrier she uses the sheathe of Akanemaru just as she had with the woman possessed by the snake and the priest who had been taken over by the oni's arm. Soma begins to panic and Nanoka tells him she is going to take away his beast, the tool he has used to kill while he remained hidden. Infuriated, Soma jumps down and punches Nanoka, but her poisonous blood begins to eat into his hand. Nanoka manages to absorb the beast's malice and wires fly down to carry Soma away as he screams that he wants to kill Nanoka. On the verge of passing out, Nanoka notices Ayame's paper foxes floating down towards her. When she wakes up, she is Mao's clinic, having received some of his blood to help her recover. Mao tells her how proud he is of her and that he managed to exorcise Akanemaru's sheathe as it was overflowing with the beast's evil aura. As Nanoka rests, Mao realizes that Soma must have attacked her on his own, and he cannot forgive this transgression.

Chapter 252: 鉄鼠
Tesso

(Iron Rat)
Soma is in a bedroom, hidden beneath the covers as Hakubi scolds him for trying to kill Nanoka and having the beast nearly exorcised in the process. Strange sounds come from beneath the blankets as a small shard of metal falls off the bed much to Hakubi's seeming pleasure as the remnants of the beast apparently struggles with Soma to keep them both alive. Hakubi locks Soma into the room and then tells his younger brothers that they cannot see their brother right now. Hakubi questions Kagari about whether she knew of Soma's plan, but she lies and tells him that she had no idea what Soma as up to. Mei sees the tiny shard of metal that dropped out from under the covers of Soma's bed and Hakubi tells her it is an energized fragment of metal created from Soma's regenerating body. The spindle of metal turns into an animal and Hakubi calls it an "iron rat", commenting that Soma may still be useful after all. Days later Hyakka visits Mao to tell him that someone has been attacking and killing people, and the attack has the face of a rat. With Nanoka recovering back in the present, Mao and Hyakka go and investigate the killings together. Mao is uncertain of how Soma might be involved, believing he could not heal from his injuries so quickly. Soon the pair stumble upon the rat-faced attacker and Mao is able to exorcise him, turning him back into a normal man. The man explains that he had broken into a rich man's house and saw the man burn a paper talisman over a rat's cage when suddenly the creature lept out of the cage and onto his face as he interrupted the curse. Suddenly a metal rat rips its way out of the man's throat, killing him. Mao and Hyakka chase after the creature recognizing it at something the metal users of the Goko Clan used to control.

Chapter 254: 殺した男
Koroshita otoko

(The Man You Killed)
Daigo gently mocks Soma, telling him that he remembers being beheaded in the warehouse they are standing in front of now. Soma is puzzled that he could still be alive, but Daigo says he knows Soma has become a more prolific killer. Daigo explains that he was able to watch Soma through Natsuno, and having heard enough, Soma attacks Daigo. Daigo, however, easily dispatches the young boy. Daigo tells Soma that it was impossible for the boy to kill him, as he was not part of the war for succession of the Goko clan. Hakubi merely wanted Soma to cross that line and believe himself a killer so he could become more useful. Elsewhere Hyakka and Mao battle against Sasuga and Hakubi, and Mao seriously pushes Sasuga back with ease. Sasuga believes he traps Mao in a column of water, but Mao slips out and slices off Hakubi's arm which cannot regenerate as Mao is part of the battle of succession. Mao promises to slay Hakubi in order to free Soma.

Chapter 255: 渦の中
Uzu no naka

(Inside the Whirlpool)
Mao and Hyakka work well as a team, covering one another and helping counter the attacks of the Goko Clan. When Hyakka attacks the iron rats, Sasuga attempts to use his water attacks against the fire-wielder, but Mao slices his conch shell in two. When Hakubi's dismembered arm tries to attack Mao while under the control of the iron rats, Hyakka quickly sets it ablaze. With things going poorly for the Goko Clan, Hakubi has no choice but to cast a spell that knocks Mao and Hyakka back outside of the barrier, sending them away from the Goko Clan's hideout. Hyakka is annoyed that Mao interfered with his grudgematch against Hakubi, but Mao explains that he holds Hakubi responsible for training Nanoka's attacker, Soma. Elsewhere at Hakubi's warehouse, Soma sits against the wall, despondent. Daigo told him that Hakubi tricked him into beheading him to make him think there was no going back to being an innocent again. Soma expected Daigo to kill him, but instead Daigo simply walks away after revealing the truth. Suddenly Hakubi appears and tells Soma he has come to take him home. Soma follows Hakubi, deciding that he has little choice in the matter. Elsewhere along a coastline, some boys spot the corpse of a woman stuck in a whirlpool beneath a cliff. Days later, Mao and Nanoka are riding along with Mao explaining that he was going to make Soma sorry for ever attacking Nanoka. Nanoka is quietly flattered that Mao was standing up for her. Later, Kamon comes to speak with Mao, suggesting that rumored woman in the whirlpool could be Masago. Beniko arrives and explains that the body has been trapped in the whirlpool for more than ten days without decaying, seeming to confirm that this likely is Masago.

Chapter 256: 狙い
Nerai

(Intention)
After speaking with some locals, they confirm that the whirlpools below the cliff upon which the torii gate of the dragon god rests is a place generally avoided by ships due to the powerful currents. Peering into the waters below, Nanoka, Mao and Kamon all spy the corpse of the woman floating in the water, each wondering if it could really be Masago. Summoning roots, Kamon fetches the corpse out of the whirlpool and drags it up, only to be shocked with the woman reveals herself to be a moray eel ayakashi. Shiranui appears behind Kamon, revealing that he was coming in search of the lost artifacts that were displaced when his temple collapsed. Kamon explains that he and Mao exorcised all of them, and Shiranui inquires if they found the Spear of Taima, the weapon that nearly killed Byoki and Mao. Kamon tells Shiranui that the did not find the Spear of Taima, but that he should ask Daigo, though he reminds Shiranui that Daigo would likely kill him. Shiranui grows tired of Kamon talking down to him and produces the Mirror of the Sea Dragon. Using the powers of the mirror, Shiranui knocks Kamon into the water and the two prepare to battle.

Notes:
  • Due to the double numbered issue of Shonen Sunday this week, there will be no issue next week to give the artists a break for the holiday season.
  • The Spear of Taima (退魔の槍/Taima no Yari) uses the word "taima" (退魔), a term that is often used in contemporary fantasy literature meaning "demonic exorcism". However, despite the word's modern popularity in fiction, the word is of ancient origin dating back to the late 1500s when the historic figure Ishida Mitsunari (石田三成) was said to have defeated a demon that haunted a bridge.
  • In Japanese the Mirror of the Sea Dragon is called "Kairyukyo" (海龍鏡), very literally the "Mirror of the Sea Dragon" as the translated name suggests. However the kanji used for "dragon" (龍/ryu), is the old form kanji (given the age of the mirror, an object created during the Heian era in the 1100s CE, it is appropriate). More common these days, "dragon" is written "竜" in this simplified fashion. Kanji can be divided into "old character forms" (舊字體/kyujitai) and "new character forms" (新字体/shinjitai). The new character forms were introduced in 1946 during the kanji reforms becoming what are known as "general use kanji" (当用漢字/toyo kanji).

Chapter 257: 不知火の狙い
Shiranui no nerai

(Shiranui's Feelings)
Shiranui thinks back to first hearing about the Five-Color Temple shortly after Mao was named as the successor of the Goko Clan. During one of his clandestine visits to Yurako in the cavern, Shiranui was told that Masago had been selected as the water-user representative at the temple. Shiranui understood that whichever man was declared the inheritor of the Goko Clan would marry his sister, Sana. But if Masago won, she would marry a man who would control the clan with her. Shiranui imagined that Masago might even be forced to marry his father. Shiranui thought about running away with Masago and caught her leaving. She asked him to let her leave, explaining that she was called to the temple and told to kill other members of the clan. Explaining that she could not bring herself to do it, Shiranui asks if she is planning to run away with Kamon. Masago blushed and confirmed that she was planning to. Shiranui warns Masago that Kamon is one of the others called to the temple, and that he may murder her. Masago simply smiled and told Shiranui that Kamon is not that sort of person. Underwater, Shiranui and Kamon begin their battle as Shiranui thinks to himself that he too was trying to save Masago. Nanoka wants to help as she looks down from the cliff, realizing that while trapped inside the whirlpool Kamon is helpless. Mao asks her if she thinks she can cut the whirlpool with her earthen powers and readies Genbu. With their help, Kamon is able to disarm Shiranui's Mirror of the Sea Dragon. Pinning Shiranui to the cliff wall, Kamon asks where Masago is and Mao realizes that as long as Shiranui has Masago hidden away they will never be able to kill him. Kamon asks Shiranui directly if Masago is really dead, explaining that when he touched her she was warm, as if she was living. Shiranui sneers, telling Kamon that she has been dead for 900 years, while thinking to himself that he will be the one that saves Masago.

Chapter 258: 疑惑の芽生え
Giwaku no mebae

(Suspicion Arises)
Pinning the water user against the cliff with his vines, Kamon tells everyone that he knows Shiranui had unrequited feelings for Masago. Kamon asks why Masago's corpse would be warm for 900 years if she was truly dead and why would Shiranui keep it with him. Nanoka privately wonders if Masago could have had the Taizanfukun life-extending technique performed on her to revive her. Mao realizes that Shiranui was not trying to become the new master of the Goko Clan, rather he was trying to learn the secrets of Taizanfukun to perserve Masago's life. Suddenly the cliff behind Shiranui ruptures in a blast of water that frees him. He summons the Mirror of the Sea Dragon and manages to escape. Kamon explains that he was able to plant some seeds on the mirror that may allow him to track Shiranui, however he tells Mao that the he is worried about the Spear of Taima. If it really did sink to the bottom of the ocean it will not be a problem, but he is worried that Daigo may have actually collected the spear. Nanoka asks why Daigo would want the spear and Kamon explains that it can kill Byoki, but it can also kill Mao. Both Kamon and Nanoka hope that Daigo truly has not found the spear. Back in the capital, Hyakka is moping, frustrated that Mao and the others did not bring him along and that he missed his chance to kill Hakubi once and for all. Otoya explains that Hyakka's fire powers would not have been useful in the ocean. It seems Hyakka has been sending his sparrows out in search of the Garden of Longevity with no luck, but suddenly Yurako appears, telling Hyakka that his little sparrows have given away his location.
