Isago
Isago is the wife of the headman of Sakagami Island. She has told her husband of the power of immortality that lies in the flesh of a mermaid and has encouraged him to seek it out. But Isago has a hidden secret of her own.
She is pregnant by her former husband who was murdered by the Sakagami and in order for her child to be born healthy she needs the flesh of a mermaid, because Isago is in fact herself a mermaid.
Isago explains to Rin that there are mermaids who walk on two legs, and those that swim in the sea, and that the ones that walk on land eat the ocean dwelling mermaids for sustenance, especially when they are pregnant. Isago finally manages to get the Mermaid's Flesh she needs and dives into the ocean to deliver her child.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The kanji for Isago means "sand".
