OVAs (often interchanged to OAV) stand for Original Video Animation and are akin to "straight to video" releases, however they are always of a quality higher than television animation. The three Rumic World OVAs were created when Takahashi was a red-hot newcomer in the world of manga. Urusei Yatsura had proven to be a mega-hit and studios were looking for more stories to animated by the gifted artist. OVAs were a fairly new concept in the booming 1980s anime industry and so three short stories were animated and perhaps canonized as her most famous short features. In 1993 in the United States the were released in the early wave of anime releases from Central Park Media when anime was starting to boom in America.
