Kimi wa no. 1

Mr. Tsutsumi struggles in his work, he is a door to door salesman with no success and no motivation and when his boss screams at him about his lack of sales he shrugs his shoulders and gives up. Tsutsumi winds up working for a detox service helping provide companionship for elderly people. Tsutsumi proves to be a good listener and seeks advice from Mr. Kitagawa, one of his clients who he keeps company via the detox service. Asking Kitagawa about what he should do, Kitagawa asks to see his smile and then berates him when Tsutsumi fails to wear a false tooth to hide his missing teeth. Tsutsumi diligently attends to Mr. Kitagawa who's wife and adult daughter, Eiko, are always kind to him when he visits. Eiko and her mother are going out for the day, leaving Tsutsumi with Mr. Kitagawa.

Before leaving Eiko notices Mr. Kitagawa's missing tooth and asks if he has still not gotten it fixed. As it turns out, Tsutsumi lost his tooth on an excursion with Mr. Kitagawa when the old man started screaming at teenagers on the train who would not give up their seat to him. When he pulled his cane back to hit them he accidentally knocked Tsutsumi's tooth out. Much to Tsutsumi's surprise Mr. Kitagawa insists on secretly following his wife and daughter on their excursion. Rather than going to Takarazuka as they told him, they go to a realty company and take a tour of homes. Kitagawa explains to Tsutsumi that he worked for the corporation Moretsu starting in 1972 when the economy was booming and that because he worked so hard he spent very little time with his wife and daughter. Now he fears his family will abandon him. Angrily Kitagawa tells Tsutsumi he can sell their home and kick his family out if they think about leaving him. Eventually the detox service tells Tsutsumi that Mr. Kitagawa has cancelled their appointments.

One day Eiko calls Tsutsumi and says that her mother is not answering her phone and asks him if he can hurry over and check on them. Tsutsumi does so and finds Kitagawa standing over his unconscious wife and he immediately thinks that Mr. Kitagawa has finally snapped and beaten his wife. Tsutsumi calls an ambulance and it turns out she has anemia. The house shopping was not due to Eiko and her mother being fed up with angry Mr. Kitagawa but instead because Eiko was looking to move out and start a relationship of her own.

Notes:
  • Mr. Tsutsumi (堤) writes his name with the word for "embankment".
  • Kitagawa (北川), his mentor, is a rather common name in Japanese. The kanji means "northern river".
  • The detox service (デトックスサービス) that Tsutsumi finds employment with is not the same as a drug detoxification that the name might suggest to foreign readers. Japanese detox services help people do things like get away from computer screens, enjoy the outdoors and have companionship and social interaction.
  • Eiko Kitagawa (北川映子) writes her first name as "reflection child".
  • Tsutsumi says that his interactions with Mr. Kitagawa remind him of the "power harrassment" (パワハラ/pawa hara). For the most part power harrassment is intense yelling and screaming, but at times it can elevate to physical abuse as well. An extreme example of power harrassment is Showa era ramen shop where the owner slaps and screams at his employees.
  • Eiko's mother says she is looking forward to going to see Takarazuka. Takarazuka is the all female musical theater productions known for lavish costuming. Takahashi did an entire short story surrounding Takarazuka, Reserved Seat.
  • It may seem like Mr. Kitagawa's behavior on the train is played for laughs and is heavily exaggerated as he screams at young people for not giving up their seat to him, but this video shows that some elderly can be very intimidating on train as this man hits a woman with his newspaper because she crossed her legs (taking up space and potentially dirtying his trousers if her shoes brushed against him).
  • Kitagawa says he could sell his home as it is near the station and the Olympics were coming up. The proximity to the train station is one of the primary factors that determine property values. The Olympics were the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which wound up being delayed due to the Coronavirus.
