Room for Two
二人の家
Futari no ie
Hiroshi is a middle-aged man who lives at home with his father-in-law after the death of his wife, Sasae. Hiroshi explains that Sasae's mother died when she was young and so she was raised entirely by her father. When Sasae and Hiroshi married it seemed natural that her father would live with them. Then Sasae died and Hiroshi said that even though it was odd for two older men unrelated by blood to live together he did not mind having the company since he had no children.
Soon though Hiroshi's father-in-law takes a tumble on his bicycle and cannot help with the housework as he had done before. He calls in a young housekeeper, Kandori, to help make meals and keep things tidy. Hiroshi and his father-in-law come to enjoy having a woman around the house and they soon find out that Kandori's husband died and left her with a large debt that she is working to pay off. Father-in-law decides to increase Kandori's hours to help her earn more money, but on Saturday another housekeeper is sent instead much to everyone's disappointment. The replacement tells Hiroshi and his father-in-law that Kandori works another job at a restaurant in order to earn more money. When she returns to the men's home she begins work but soon faints due to exhaustion. Father-in-law tells her she can borrow some of Sasae's clothes when hers get wet when she falls in the kitchen.
Hiroshi begins to think that when the seventh anniversary of his wife's death passes he might tell Kandori that he'd like to marry her. He has enough money to likely pay off her debts because he and his father-in-law split the cost of building the house. Soon however he notices his father-in-law spending time with Kandori and begins to think he may want to marry her as well. He realizes that even though he and his father-in-law split the cost of building the house his father-in-law owns the property which could be problematic. Hiroshi decides to speed things up and not wait until after the anniversary of his wife's death to ask Kandori to marry him. When she arrives for work one day however he notices a ring on her finger and thinks his father-in-law beat him to the punch and asked her to marry him. At work all he can think about is how this woman he had a crush on will now be his new mother-in-law and living in their shared home but not as his wife. When he comes home that afternoon however his father-in-law says that Kandori is marrying a businessman and will no longer be cleaning for them anymore, which winds up being a great relief for Hiroshi.
