Karula

Karula Ever since they've been children, Karula has loved Rupa. When one day Rupa showed Karula a picture of Lum, his bride-to-be, Karula changed from a childhood friend to a violent assailant. From then on she constantly threatened and terrorized Rupa out of jealousy. The more Karula would attack him, the more he'd try to distance himself from her.

Eventually Rupa realizes that Lum is not his ideal bride. He admits to Karula that he loves her and asks her to marry him, which she happily accepts.

The Meaning Behind the Name - カルラ

Alien names are handled in the same way that any "foreign" or loan word is in Japanese- through the use of katakana. Consequently Karula's name is spelled phonetically (the same with Lum, Ran, Rei, Rupa and other aliens) and a deeper kanji-based meaning cannot be discerned.

Initially, when translated into English by Animeigo they transliterated her name as "Carla", however many subsequent translations (Viz's English manga, Sentai Filmwork's translation of the 2022 series) have used "Karula" which is closer to the original Japanese. We have elected to use "Karula" due to the "U" which is common with Rupa and Upa's names.
